...that if you like Animal Collective you'll love the new album. If you don't like Animal Collective then you still won't like them after hearing the new album.
by a long way to my ears but I'm still not massivly convinced. I've never really bothered withg them before though so I'm no big fan or anything. Just an interested passer by. Brother Sport is a really good track though easily the best one on the album for me.
I love Panda Bear's Person Pitch so much yet Strawberry Jam left me cold despite repeated listens in an attempt to see if it won me over. I've been reading the reviews of the new one and am still unsure whether to take the plunge.
Feels was a landmark album. Individual songs (like Banshee Beat) inspired essay length praise describing the long slow build of a brilliant track. But since then, it's been one turd after another.
People finally woke up to Strawberry Jam's lack of substance, and a year from now, they'll be saying the same thing about Merriweather's tone-deaf collection of bored loops. Feels pulsed with energy. The last two (and all the solo junk) have no heartbeat at all. AC songs have become a formula--loop a bunch of stuff, reverb the vox, get loud, then not loud, then stop the beat a second, then more spastic looping.
I used to love this band. Not anymore. All that's left is the critical hogwash, and two lumps resembling the freak folk equivalent of "Tusk."
I think it's their best album by quite a long shot, mainly because it has so much sonic attack (in a purely joyous way) that it sort of steamrollers over their tendancy to be overly fey, which I guess has been my previous problem with them.
maybe just maybe he is board and wonders what it's like and if it's worth taking a punt on. If someone conects with him on here and pushes him either way it will put his mind at ease and then he wont either feel rip off to fuck when its shit or a bit disapointed.
You might like this is quite psychadelic really, whats your feelings on Animal Collective or have you not delved to deep?
its more like not really enjoying any cadberrys chocolate, then hearing a shitload about a new cadberrys chocolate that's a bit of a departure from old cadberrys chocolate and asking people how different it really is.
its a lovely folk album. couple that with campfire songs and the prospect hummer ep (feat vashti bunyan). not at all like recent stuff, really pretty folk stuff, superbly produced (didn't you rate the born ruffians album? it was the same producer who did sung tongs), just really really good. i can imagine somebody who doesn't rate strawberry jam or MPP at all digging it a lot. feels is good too, but lies somewhere inbetween sung tongs era and strawberry jam era soundwise (sorta obviously really), so i'm less inclined to think that'll change someone's mind if they don't dig the new albums. but it is really awesome.
It's like, where's the songs? Strawberry Jam I think I could have liked quite a lot, if I hadn't already decided that I didn't like Animal Collective. When I first heard Peacbone, I was like "Omg, this shit is sick!" Then I found out it was Animal Collective, and I was like "Oh fuck, no way lol!" So yeah, I'll probably check out Sung Tongs.
never understood why people repped feels so much. the good songs are excellent, but for a first time listener a whole ton of it could feel like filler and you really have to work through a lot to get to the energetic stuff. even now i've got to be in the right mood for the more ambient moments, and i really dig them. defo check out prospect hummer and campfire songs if you like sung tongs, they had a really great period of amazing folk songs which i hope they at least touch upon again briefly.
A lot of their stuff (Strawberry Jam in particular) leaves me quite frustrated. I really like Feels though, so I'm going to give MPP a good listen to tomorrow.
But the only thing I really like on it is grass, the rest just don't seem to do it for me. Although that purple bottle 1 or whatever it's called is pretty good. I just don't think I like the silly 1s where nothing seems to happen, like that bees 1 and stuff. But I am gonna take the dive on this new 1.
My friend said...
...that if you like Animal Collective you'll love the new album. If you don't like Animal Collective then you still won't like them after hearing the new album.
if you don't like the animal collective, will you like the animal collective?
what?
bands who i dont really like,
ARE capable of doing things i do like
maybe
its the best thing they've done for about 4 or 5 years
It's better than strawbery jam
by a long way to my ears but I'm still not massivly convinced. I've never really bothered withg them before though so I'm no big fan or anything. Just an interested passer by. Brother Sport is a really good track though easily the best one on the album for me.
i think they suck a pointless cock
but this album is AMAZING. mainly.
yeah why not
It has moments of real brilliance but if you don't like AC
I'm not sure you'll like this one either.
thanks.
x
I have this quandary too.
I love Panda Bear's Person Pitch so much yet Strawberry Jam left me cold despite repeated listens in an attempt to see if it won me over. I've been reading the reviews of the new one and am still unsure whether to take the plunge.
panda bear is the best thing about them
its his vocal melodies that gets me, all my favourite AC songs are his - but how could the end of chores leave you coldddddd!!!
a definite purchase then
this album is far more Panda Bear-led.
i have never seen the appeal of this band
but i tried this new one after the indie world and his mother have said it's the best thing since forever.
and it's wonderful, not perfect. but really worth a listen.
Once a great band...not now

RstJ
I've never really been a fan before
but love MPP
Depends what you didn't like about them before
I think it's their best album by quite a long shot, mainly because it has so much sonic attack (in a purely joyous way) that it sort of steamrollers over their tendancy to be overly fey, which I guess has been my previous problem with them.
why bother trying to like something that you don't already?
It's like saying "I don't like dark chocolate. Will I like the new Bournville bar?"
ever so ture

to be fair
most of their albums sound completely different
its more like not really enjoying any cadberrys chocolate, then hearing a shitload about a new cadberrys chocolate that's a bit of a departure from old cadberrys chocolate and asking people how different it really is.
haha
this is also true S Jam is very diffrent to MPP and thats pretty much my AC experiance.
It's a fair question to ask really.
I wonder if Wrightylew likes Hot Chocolate?
you should get sung tongs james
I'm going to look further into them soon yeah
Sung Tongs and Water Courses are my best recomendations so far.
Should I get Sung Tongs, Si-Si?
yes

I don't like Feels at aaaaall
It's like, where's the songs? Strawberry Jam I think I could have liked quite a lot, if I hadn't already decided that I didn't like Animal Collective. When I first heard Peacbone, I was like "Omg, this shit is sick!" Then I found out it was Animal Collective, and I was like "Oh fuck, no way lol!" So yeah, I'll probably check out Sung Tongs.
i think its probably their best album for consistancy
never understood why people repped feels so much. the good songs are excellent, but for a first time listener a whole ton of it could feel like filler and you really have to work through a lot to get to the energetic stuff. even now i've got to be in the right mood for the more ambient moments, and i really dig them. defo check out prospect hummer and campfire songs if you like sung tongs, they had a really great period of amazing folk songs which i hope they at least touch upon again briefly.
Depends if you like Vampire Weekend or not
haha
Banshee Beat is by far the best thing they have ever done in my opinion
A lot of their stuff (Strawberry Jam in particular) leaves me quite frustrated. I really like Feels though, so I'm going to give MPP a good listen to tomorrow.
I only have feels
But the only thing I really like on it is grass, the rest just don't seem to do it for me. Although that purple bottle 1 or whatever it's called is pretty good. I just don't think I like the silly 1s where nothing seems to happen, like that bees 1 and stuff. But I am gonna take the dive on this new 1.
It is really unbelievably good.
Really.
I very much prefer it
to Strawberry Jam...this is much more laid-back on the whole. It needs a few more plays for me to really get into it, but I'm enjoying it so far...
Simon Price
thinks it sounds exactly like Mercury Rev.
I think we should all go round his house and stare disdainfully at him.
Yes they are not remotely 'experimental' and really very boring
much like Battles!
I hope 2009 sees lazy Jounralists quit using the term 'experimental' for what should be coined 'lazy'.
