Joining the ranks alongside previous winners Adele, Mika and Corrine Bailey Rae.
and clearly some kind of multi tasking genius, but I can't help feeling that she seems to be a little bereft of actually MONSTER TUNES. I mean Stuck On Repeat is ace, but, I don't know. I'll let her off on the grounds that her first UK release isn't until May or something stupid, but the US based EP feels quite hollow. Prove me wrong.
Why the fuck wasn't Frank Musik even in the top 10? Bastards.
I like several bands on their list this year. That either means that synthpop is to take over the world, or that my advancing age means I'm more susceptable to the BBCs taste makers taste making.
And Dalston Oxfam Shop and Nothing But Green Lights and quite a few fundamentally decent people, but y'know. Do you suppose any of the choices of Metal Hammer's editor got in?
About the only person ever from Blackpool to be in a reasonable band/singer etc. Her stuff's OK but got to support your hometown's output.
She’s from Blackpool, I think.
Will have to check her out. There was a girl I went to college with in an early 2000 girl group who had a high ranking chart hit. They were so crap I forgot the name.
I'm still not quite convinced she's going to break through this year though. She's a really good talent with an amazing voice but I can't help feeling the female acoustic singer songwriter market is too over-populated for her to make a big mark. I guess time will tell.
Sounds just like me!
Come on the 'quay...
Not heard many of the others, any of them worth checking out?
I heard them for the first time last night and they sound fun in an Avalanches kinda way.
Joker is awsome but both his remix and her are really lame, which is a shame.
as this was the only artist on that list I had heard and liked
she was good on jools, and is quite cute to boot
I only found out about her because I was trying to find some footage of a tenori-on in youtube and must admit I was instantly won over, it's nice gentle pop which is nothing groundbreaking but still nice she's getting recognition.
Only trouble I see is her appearing at creamfields and hordes of ravers e'd off their bonces getting impatient while she sorts her tenori-on out for every song
that would be semi-hilarious
she doesn't seem too bad, compared to past no 1's she amazing. stuck on repeat's alright and has had some awesome remixes. i'm supportive of any mainstream pop act that has a good relationship with the electro world, even if they don't produce anything i like much there's bound to be some great remixes. happened with klaxons, happened with mgmt, happened with late of the pier.. its a good thing, everybody wins.
She was spoilt little rich girl and stuck up her own arse, and was very much a follower of whatever trend was deemed hot.
Musically though, utter garbage, there's no substance or depth to it at all.
goddamn they were shit, i guarantee the only reason they were signed is because they were hot girls, one of the worst leeds bands
Utterly, utterly terrible. They never knew what they wanted to be, and were clearly a case of 'let's get together and half play our instruments in short skirts and we'll win'.
like i said, i think she's cute
You'd almost get the impression she invented the bloody thing the way they go on!
i think it's the first time they've actually it!
also, wicked name. Steve Holt!! (arms raised)
that was meant to say, 'seen it'
i've made a huge mistake...
i miss the blood bros...don't like jaguar love that much
thats enough for me. I'd be delighted were I Mr Jon Yamaha.
I also enjoyed Dead Disco, but that might have been aesthetics based also, I certainly don't remember them being appaling.
Stuck On Repeat is a tune. But she's going to have to find some blinders from somewhere to survive the year I'd imagine.
explain...! I don't get out much.
But it almost seems as though she's getting the praise for the remixes that dramatically improve her fairly basic original stuff.
The equation is "Wonky pop" plus credible backer plus credible background plus Web 2.0 (note prominence of YouTube clips in her press) plus gives quotes that are slightly more interesting than those Beyonce gives and is thus "not your average bland pop diva" plus has heard of Kate Bush plus NOT GUITAR INDIE LOL plus ELECTRICAL BOX OF ELECTRO MAJICK that makes sounds like those found on Kylie records.
Says here she auditioned for Pop Idol. That's going to be mentioned in every interview if she becomes famous a la Katie White's girl group.
but i did an interview with her a little while back and she seemed very lovely and grounded, quite good live too
business is a fucking joke. 'Business' is the right word. It was nationally celebrated on the 1pm news on the BBC for fuck's sake, as an advert for 6music.
At least George Lamb, who had all the shortlisted acts playing live on his 6music show, didn't get to show his distended dumbed-down Lord Fauntleroy face as if it was in fact he that 'broke' this nouvelle bollocks act.
Wouldn't surprise me if Little Boots is represented by John Noel Management or somesuch reeking corruption.
About social referencing. Explains very clearly why all the "these are going to be the sounds of 2009" lists are all the same.
at Cargo in October and she was shit. The songs just seemed to plod along and not really go anywhere, not the best voice either.
Clearly she has a strong team behind her paying the PR company to tell us she is the next big thing
Conor Mcnicholas NME
The Soft Pack (Formally The Muslims)
"This tip came through just as a band name from a mate, but hearing the first 20 seconds of Parasites on their MySpace gave me goose bumps. It's alternately perky and dirty and done with a swagger few UK bands ever seem to pull off."
A band called THE MUSLIMS you say!?!??! THAT'S THE EDGIEST THING I'VE EVER HEARD, HOW SOON CAN WE GET THEM ON THE COVER!?!?!
"2006/07 was the time of bands with animal names - the Wombats, Arctic Monkeys. And 2008 will be the year of unusual band names."
Jonathan Yeah? ?
I just can't read the NME the writing style is the most annoying around ever! Even if they get it even a little bit right they have to say it in such a way that is so fucking annoying it makes you hate them a little bit.
with the whole "stupid people think its cool, smart people think its funny; also cool"
mcnicholas is more like barley in charge of a magazine, the idiot finding dumb/edgy shit cool
he only listened to 20 seconds of 'em.
Just sounds like a bad Madonna song. That's all I've heard so can't really comment further.
I mean really? Lets be honest, her song sounds like Sound of the Underground by Girls Aloud! I've now had a look at her stuff on youtube and am singularly unimpressed. Derivative and irritating. At least she's pretty, eh lads?... Lads?
7 were on Universal.
but I have no idea where I read that now so you are probibly right.
but does it deserve a feature on the News at 10. "Slow", "news" and "day".
not really fond of all this synthpop, she's nothing special.
