Mount Kimbie
DiS get ya ear holes round this!
Fact says:
'Kode 9 has spoke about dubstep potentially meaning anything made around 140BM, and if Mount Kimbie are dubstep (their debut 12", the Maybes EP, is being released on Scuba's Hotflush label in Februrary) then it's as out-there as the genre's got to date. Title track 'Maybes' starts off with slow washes of Mogwai-style guitar, and then stutters into a looped vocal lament. Most of all, Mount Kimbie's debut sounds like beats dying - the clicks and snaps of closing track 'Taps' seem to splutter and wheeze a rhythm that knows its time's running out. If post-rock was all about making rock music without traditional constraints of structure, then this is where the genre should've gone, rather than a bunch of Godspeed You Black Emperor clones and bands with no ideas left riffing circles into the ground, throwing some strings on top and calling it album number eleven.'

I say sweet jesus this is good, just check the myspace player, the second track clip that comes in on the EP sampler is awsome.

Maybes is probs my favourite song of the year
so far, so so good. The start reminds me of stars of the lid strangley enough...
Any idea when their next Ep's coming out?
I know there are some adventerous types out there somewhere
...
this is good
shame there's no full tracks though. I think the best way for instant success nowadays is to wrap up another genres strong points in a genre that's completely opposite and market it to that audience. Gonna check them out in Bristol, that's a well good line up; Boxcutter!
Just teasers at the moment
but the EP is out next month so I'm definatly gona grab that.
I've heard full tracks in mixes from people like Scuba and they are brilliant.
I think post rocky noise drone and dubstep share loads of common ground but the rock people don't really like to look into it in the most part.
I mean Distance pretty much sounds like a droney kind of metal band with massive beats. So does alot of Vex'd and hell they even did a mix featuring loads of noise and drone with dubstep and grime.
theres a few full tracks up here...
http://www.last.fm/music/Mount+Kimbie
wicked!
I'm sure they will get some plays on Radio One tonight to as there is a Hotflush Vs. 7even showcase on Marry Ann Hobbs.
I can't wait for the EP.
bumpreminder
listen again.
I'm doing that right now
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/maryannehobbs/
I wasn't up for some reason last night. Turns out she shouted me out with a couple of others for doing a running comentry on dubstepforum last week hehehe
Not lots of Mount Kimbie in tonights mix but it's all so damn good.
hehe :)
0:10.31 / 2:00.01
that hotflush mix
was smoove.
great show last night, the harmonic 313, lemonade and horsepower tunes especially.
I love the label
I'm very excited about it's 2009 lineup so far. I'm just listening to that bit of the mix to I got distracted.
wow, wiley stepped up a little, who produced this?
Wiley - 'Off The Radar' (Dubplate)
I dunno he usualy does his own stuff or gets Blessed Beats
to produce I think, it's pretty wicked though yeah. I will go and have a little hunt see what I can dig up.
I haven't found out yet
I think he just made it to teach some of the yonger lot how to do things by the sounds of things. I dunno if it will ever come out or anything but Wiley has a more grime orintated album in the works called RAT or something some maybe it will appear on that.
thx jimitheresearcher
I'll keep an eye out
Wiley is a bit good at the moment, have you heard some of his war dubs against Durrty Goodz in the last few weeks? they are at each other and bothing coming up with bangers.
ian bothing?
Ian Botham with Wiley?

this EP is out at the end of the week!
I can't wait to hear it in full its pretty damn special
:D
this is easily one of the best bits of music I've heard so far this year
so I'm gona bump this thread!
You're right, the EP is superb
'Maybes' is probably the most gorgeous thing I've heard all year. Hotflush are really putting out some great stuff at the moment, the new Pangaea's great as well.
On the subject of 'anything at 140bpm', has anyone heard the Geiom/Appleblim collaboration that came out this week? Closest thing they've done yet to 140bpm techno, it's pretty as hell.
oh hell yes
the Geiom & Appleblim 12" on clear viynal is very special indeed. I cant get enough of Berkane Sol at the moment.
Hotflush are insane as well that Pangaea 12" is so beautiful and its somehow so diffrent to the really subtle Hessel Audio stuff.
Untold has a Hotflush 12" coming soon its a bit good and again so diffrent to his Hemlock releases.
There is far to much good stuff goin on at the moment.
This Mount Kimbie EP really should be getting more love on here it really should be going down a storm, but I guess because its on a dubstep label and kinda popped out of the blue not many inide peeps know about it.
Bump
Because i've been listening to the EP loads recently and it's amazing.
This needed a bump...
The ep is really awesome.
just downloaded this from itunes
without bothering to listen to it first on myspazz, rare for me! the description was intriguing, and bang on. nice to hear guitar textures in amongst some burialy beats and dubby bass-osity.
i guess its a bit soon but any whispers of an album yet?
they are working on some more stuff
but I have no idea if its album shaped yet, they will probibly do some more 12"s and stuff first.
its so damn good
fuck me
its still going round on repeat, its incredible! so atmospheric....
bumpity bump
just got new speakers and they doubled the awesomeness of this record.
believe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMaKsZDD2Go
you've got me listening to all the Hotflush stuff on youtube now
so many awsome tracks...
Scuba - Twitch (Jamie Vex'd Remix)

Sigha - Bruised
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aI8xb2Snajo
Pangaea - Bear Witness

Untold - Dante
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RY9mKY8puA
thats only the last batch from ealryer in the year as well
sweet!
i'm gonna make a massive youtube playlist to work to...
been meaning to check out scuba for a while, i like it
it's a bit wow
heheh
it really is!
i can't stop listening to the first
track off the ep.
one of the best recommendations i've had on DIS. expecting nothing but big things baby. now drop the bomb.
its justs sublime
I think I'm going to have to buy the mp3's as well just so I dont ware out my 12" or even have to always turn my whole set up on everytime I wana hear it.
This is amazing, really love this ep.
I love that Electronic Explorations session, so much great stuff on there.
Maybes is the first track to disrupt my post rock marathon i've been on. So glad it's on Last.fm
haha...

more stuff on Mount Kimbie!

Cool...
I think I read this article in the last ever print FACT magazine thats currently out. Really nice.
The EP is one of my favourite releases all year..
I heard it was the last one
not that I've ever seen one it doesn't get very far north doesn't fact.
yep easily one of my fave 12"s this year too its brilliant, I cant wait for the next one. Did you hear some of the new tracks in the latest Electronic Explorations by James Blake?
link for peeps who didnt grab it...

Mount Kimbie - at least_13 - [Forthcoming ‘Hotflush’]
Mount Kimbie - The Mighty Gee [Forthcoming ‘Hotflush’]
they sounded a bit tasty
I only listened through it once, but I find they take a while to slip in....
Sounded nice mind.
Theres a big editorial in the front, about them reverting to print only. Its a shame, along with Wire magazine it was one of the best magazines by a long way... and FREE!
I hardly ever see a copy of Wire either
my news agents is a bit lame and I'm to tight to subscribe, I just like to buy these things on sight. I was reading an epic version of the Kode 9 interview from Wire online the other day though it took freakin ages but it was well worth it.

I rarely by the wire, its quite an intensive read...
Being based around london, i get pretty easy access to both of them. I picked up my first copy of fact magazine in Falmouth though so it must get out there. I doubt York would have a copy, but I'd imagine there would be some around in leeds.
leeds might
I only really get to gigs late at night in leeds I live in a lil town in the middle of know where so dodnt even get to york much for some civilisation hehe
even more Mount Kimbie!
http://www.webjam.com/inverted_audio/interviews/$9d7417dc85094a7e972e7f74e9de5e63/2009/04/17/mount_kimbie
got this 12" the other day actually
only listened to it a few times so far but it's really interesting, I really like how it doesn't really fall into any one category.
yeah
its just the dubstep peeps have cuaght onto it first as its on hotflush oh and two of the tracks are at about 140 bpm so still mixable... if your adveterus.
yeah it's sounds malleable and vague in a nice way
but still with really great clicky beats. Looking forward to more from them. Also, how amazing is the new FlyLo track?! Fucking amazing. Best thing I've heard from him, no doubt
yeah man its something else
really mad to hear it on tectonic as well
hey escha are you talking about this 12"
and jimi (seeing as you're both talking bout it!)
Also jimi on a scale of Hard House to Hip Hop where does dubstep mixing come, i'm not so sure how good i'd be at it.
hehehhe
what do you mean?
tempo wise... or like how easy it is in general to mix...
Its faster than hardhouse (I think) and ye techno stuff as its at about 140 bpm ish, I found it quite easy to get into with the mixing.
The new flying lotus track is on a 12" with Joker on the flip on Tectonic records, it just came out the other week.
i mean in general
i'd say hardhouse being the easiest ----> hip hop
as in i could mix hard house pretty seemless all day long (not that i'd really want to), hip hop not a clue. I just listen to a lot of the mixing and it sounds, sort of sketchy in places even decent mixes like there was no real way out of the last track an into the next.
Also, yeah it's on my list boomkat are gonna receive a bit of an order from me on payday!
ahhh I get ya
well some of it is easyer than others really, its not as strict in structure as say techno is. Some of it is a bit like techno and you can mix it for as long as you want easily and mix out whenever but other stuff are just sound system bangers with small lead in's then your IN the track. Then you get the down right strange stuff like burial thats not in time and mount kimbie which most people wont even try mixing hehe.
So I would say its not as hard as hiphop its more like mixing breakbeat or garage or even sometimes pretty easy like with ya techno. I kind of learnt to DJ with breakbeat as thats what I was into at the time so I'm use to disjointed beats, its pretty simular to breakbeat alot of the time but theres more space in the groove and its faster.
that's pretty much how i see it, and probably why i won't be investing too much in 12". It's nice to have a bit of a change but can't see myself doing anything more than an occasional odd session with a few grime and warp records.
yeah
people mix it diffrently, like some will do it all smooth, 2562 does it but he pretty much makes swung techno anyway. Some people do really fast mixes then loads of rewinds like Skream. Some people dont mix like Coki he just cues a new one and fades it in propper soundsystem style. There are some amazing DJs though that do propper mad mixes, Oneman can blend garage, grime, dubstep, funky seamlessly so can brakles, shortstuff, geiom.
yeah, went off on a bit of a tangent there
it's the FlyLo / Joker 12" that just came out on Tectonic. It's all kinds of awesome.
its coming on a cd as well
tectonic plates vol.2, I think all tectonic stuff comes out on digital as well.
I heard something by them on the radio the other day
and I thought "yeah this is good lol".
lol
nice to see they are getting air play I've only ever heard um on mary anne hobbs or on pirate radio.
james blake
the dude I mentioned up there ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
sings live for Mount Kimbie sometimes and has a new 12" coming out on Hemlock, which is Untold's label and it sounds so gooooood, lisssssssssstennnn.
http://www.myspace.com/jamesblakeproduction
thanks,
great stuff. "Maybes" is amazing!
:D
brilliant innit
Next EP out in July
according to the Hotflush peeps
;)
p.s. yet again Mr Rob Booth played another fresh Kimbie joint on his last EE podcast: Mount Kimbie - Fifty Mile View - [Forthcoming ‘Hotflush’] and now he wants to own the copyright to all their music I think he is gona have a fight on his hands, Dl...
http://electronicexplorations.org/the-show/073-hecq/
this is wonderful!
I love tag "mad-hop" ha ha great thread too, easily the most interesting posters on this forum in my opinion
is that "maybes" track on Youtube an actual Mount Kimbie one?
arent the first one and half minutes a Fuck Buttons track?
yeah it's kimbie
its a sample but not of fuck buttons
I just got the promo of the forthcoming Hotflush EP
its very very nice indeed and its coming out in a few weeks. It sounds a little diffrent to the first EP its a little more electronic and dancy, sort of... but still definatly Mount Kimbie.
Liking the preview on myspace
especially whatever the second tune is.
its very nice
I think I'm going to be playing it quite alot.
They are workin on an album I think. They said so on an interview on Radio One with Gilles Peterson that it was in the works, all brand new matterial. God knows when that will appear though.
Before Burial's DJ Kicks?
hahah
easily
I cant see Burial's DJ Kicks happening at all to be honest, I don't think he ever signed up to anything and the DJ Kicks peeps got excited or something I dunno...
yeah
He always seemed pretty nonchalant about the whole thing. Kind of 'If i do it I'll just throw together some old jungle and rave tunes'. Not so sure it's the great lost Burial album though. Still holding my breath for the really dark album he mentioned at some point.
I bet there is lots of stuff we will never hear
I'm lookin forward to him getting another album out and that colaberation with Loefah sounds really interesting. We will have to wait and see what comes out.
I can see it...
Reaching Richard D James levels of 'yeah i have 1000s of hours of unreleased stuff on hard drives'.
Sketch On Glass
the new EP is out now on digital I think at places like beatport... The 12" is out at the end of the week its so good.
http://thesonicminefeild.blogspot.com/2009/07/mount-kimbie-sketch-on-glass-hotflush.html
better than maybes
fact
its easily on par
it probibly depends on my mood which I like more. I'd be more likly to play this new EP out and have a good mix with it.
FACT
yeah maybe its just the thrill of the new, but I like what's going on with this one a lot more.
it has got one hell of a spark to it
the first one was more intorspective somehow this one kind of has a glow about it.
its got more bleeps
electronic music quality is directly proportional to number of bleeps.
at least sounds like the burial/fourtet 12", dare I say it.. done better
ahh yeah
I'd say this is better than the Burial/Four Tet 12" as good as that is it doesn't touch either Kimbie EP's for me.
This weeks NME 'In the Know' by Tom Ravenscroft
"...Mount kimbie; two young shy lads called Kai and Dom who make very minimal dubstep on the Hotflush label. They don't sem to be particularly prolific and keep themselves to themselves, but every so often they'll drop an EP of amazingly intelligent music."
.
Loving Mount Kimbie at the moment, both ep's are great. I think i'm starting to get into the whole Dubstep thing, just a couple of years late i suppose.
nice
the more I hear them the more I think that there not dubstep though they sound more like fucked up hiphop even when they do there thing at 140, which aint always. Bloody amazing whatever the hell it is though.
Here is the official Sonic Router review by my boi MLR tis on REsident Advisor too...
http://sonicrouter.blogspot.com/2009/07/pre-order-mount-kimbie-sketch-on-glass.html
dubstep seems like this easy to assign genre to anything that's not
indeed
Its always been a genre with a diverse sound but its really getting rediculess now you get stuff like Flying Lotus, Burial and Mount Kimbie sitting next to Coki, Rosko, Caspa, 16Bit, and even techno types like Appleblim, Peverelist... Hell I've only ever seen dubstep type people playing Legion Of Two who are a post rock band ffs!
Its all good though its pretty cool its almost all under one banner it keeps people guessing and labels of a dubstep history dropping mad stuff like Mount Kimbie and the DJ's suporting it.
I've not bumped this in ages
but p4k reviewed them, which is nice of them.
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/13731-maybes-ep-sketch-on-glass-ep/
two essential 12"s right there
I was just coming on here to post this
And to balk at the use of the phrase: 'dubstep, a genre slightly less emotionally versatile than hair metal'.
Fella's obviously not listened to Mala, Kode9, Peverelist, Appleblim, Ramadanman, Geiom, Darkstar, Ikonika, King Midas Sound, The Bug, Pinch, Shackleton... et cetera.
Blah, *stop moaning*
I've given up moaning about p4k being a bit missled with dubstep
that hyperdub review was really lame, but the indie kids over there are still catching up so its to be expected I guess...
someone reviewed Emalkay's when I look at you and said they had only heard burial from dubstep before this the poor souls talk about going from one spectrum to the other.
nice to see a review of them propper, I know they covered the odd track sometime durring the year.
Saw the review this morning
Good to see Mount Kimbie get some love I guess. Phenomenal year for them that will go unrecognized by many.
Has anyone seen them live?
I'd be interested to know what sort of things they do.
not yet
I manged to be really skint the day they passed near me.
They get James Blake to do vocals for them when they play live...
picture of them at it here: http://www.factmagazine.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4064&Itemid=70
I think live dubstep stuff is going to take off more this next year: Mount Kimbie and James Blake doing stuff already, Darkstar finding their live feet, The Bug and King Midas Sound know what there upto, Zomby has a mythical live show in the works, then all the LA lot seem to melt together live and DJ sets really well, Flying Lotus etc...
King Midas Sound were great at the Hyperdub thing the other night
And their album is similarly excellent. It's not hit me quite like London Zoo did, but spose that's to be expected really - that's not its intended effect.
my copy on the way
I'm expecting it to be a subtle one really
oh yeah I forgot Kode9 & Spaceape have been doing live stuff for ages too.
Cheers
The pictures look nice and james blake sounds pretty interesting, will look into his stuff a bit more.
I was wondering if they play the songs they've got as they are on record or if they draw them out more, mainly laptops or instruments, like a gig or more clubby, etc. Just curious, will have to check 'em out if i get a chance!
They've only gone and remixed Untold & LV!
You can hear the original on the mix Untold did for us ages ago...
http://sonicrouter.blogspot.com/2009/03/interview-untold.html
D.Franklin & Untold - Beacon (unreleased)
Here is the Mount Kimbie remix...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s12FnMuZE28
Playing at Start The Bus in Bristol in April as well...
Hopefully with James Blake in tow.
This is free, it turns out.

To answer the question about how they are live
http://www.factmag.com/2010/02/24/watch-mount-kimbie-live-in-a-church/#more-9536
Note the extended vocal singsong at the end with James Blake.
I still can't quite get over how good 'Maybes' really is. It was, what, a year ago when it came out (or nearly), and I remember sticking it on and thinking 'this is nice', but not really clocking how great it was for ages after.
oh yeah
I posted that vid on the James Blake thread the other day I think, or somewhere else... I dunno.
Its all brilliant stuff still a year on. Can;t wait for the Untold LV remix.
On a Hotflush tip, you heard the new Scuba album yet?
Holy bejaysus it's amazing. Spooooky garage material, just listening now.
Oh, and I can't believe it's been a year since 'Maybes' came out. TIME GOES TOO FAST
not heard it yet no
Hotflush usualy send me everything over too, ahh well, I was gonna buy it anyway. Can't wait to hear it.
Timing wise I'd be tempted to do the Union Chapel show
on Saturday for their set alone but I can't justify the cost ;-(
you got me very excited there for a moment.
but I think you must mean Mount Eerie.
Completely different band.
good call, me bad
Live set for RBMA available for download...
http://beatplexity.com/mix/?id=6009
Bodes VERY well for their upcoming Bristol show, and is sounding quite simply gorgeous.
oooooh yes,
thanks dude. looking forward to the show on the 20th with XXXY.
LV & Untold : Beacon / Beacon (Mount Kimbie Remix) : Hemlock Recordings, HEK007, Promo (***Friday shipping for Monday delivery***)

which reminds me...
http://sonicrouter.blogspot.com/2010/03/competition-win-hemlock-merchandise.html
Hot
This is one of those rare times I wish I didn't write for you!
I WANT THAT PRIZE. I felt a bit sick with envy looking at that pile, as I missed out on quite a few Hemlock releases.
Well looking forward to that new LV & Untold one as well.
me too!
I've got all the releases but the t-shirt and sweatshirt are bound to be cool.

B1: At Least (Instra:mental Remix)
Mount Kimbie – Remixes Pt. 2 (12”)
A1: William (Tama Sumo & Prosumer Remix)

good news indeed!
I've got my copy of the latest Hemlock now, Mount Kimbie's remix of LV & Untold is sublime.
Preview of this is now up on soundcloud.
But I haven't listened to it yet, as my speakers aren't working (apart from James Blake mix, which is on Scuba's thing and up on youtube and everything: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuluhpxVQAA)
Sure it's great though:
http://soundcloud.com/hotflush/mount-kimbie-remixes-pt-1-hfrmx006-preview
fingers x'd
they're doing great escape :)
Is that the festival thing in Manchester?
That you've had a stage at in the past or am I confusing it with something else?
Nice one for getting them on board, you should book James Blake too, he's part of the live set up of Mount Kimbie but he's amazing on his own too.
nah
it's in Brighton http://www.escapegreat.com
ahh cool
looks good
added a bunch of tracks here
http://drownedinsoundcloud.com/post/467868157/mount-kimbie
good stuff.
They're making an album on Hotflush
Scuba said it would be out around May I think.
yeah
I dunno, I dont think I've heard them before.
According to Hotflush's Berlin PR's email sig
It's due out on 17th May. Happy times :)
Anyone else here checked their Beacon remix (I know you have jimi)? It's bliss, I strongly recommend picking it up - vinyl's only six quid, but there's digital available for about £1.50 on Boomkat. No excuse.
Heads up to people in Bristol, they're playing at Start the Bus tonight for free!
with EFA, Crackazat, and some strange foly-indie band called Little Teeth. I think 8-1 or something. Should be good.
Also
Instra:mental http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OV-L9-Ry0c
and FaltyDl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OV-L9-Ry0c
remixes up on youtube. The Instra:mental one is great, haven't heard the FaltyDl yet.
the Falty Dl one is ace as well.
and folkly*
(the first one didn't bump the thread, weirdly)
EFA mix, was just listening so might as well link to it:

Mount Kimbie album
:D
Have you listened to the clips of the new Sigha?
Absolutely amazing.
Also, 'Weakness' by George Fitzgerald is unbelievable, I may have to resurrect my ill-fated thread about him for this at some point. Scuba opened his set in Bristol with it the other night, and did the same at Fabric a month or so ago.
I've not got round to listening to the clips yet
I got distracted and had to wrestle a massive bee.
Weakness is a quality track, I think I've heard Scuba play it a few times but never clocked who it was.
I'm really loving the Mount Kimbie remix 12" that just came out all of them are fantastic.
I know!
I think the FaltyDL one is one of my favourite things he's done, and the James Blake one is just lovely.
I keep reaching for the Instra:mental one
really addicted to Instra:mental right now love he Autonomic sound, bagged the Naked Lunch 10" the other day too.
FaltyDL nails it, he's always developing. James Blake's is loads of fun it reminds me a little bit of french filter house gone mental. haha
Is the Naked Lunch one good?
It's more of the Pipsy vibe, as opposed to d'n'b right? I'm really loving the Autonomic thing at the moment, though I didn't really get into it when they played Bristol the other night. They never really kicked off with any 170bpm stuff, it was quite slow and after Scuba seemed to lack a bit of punch.
yeah its well pips
super slow mo sleek house meets electro late night vibe on one side... then I just pressed buy and forgot the flip haha. Love it when Instra:mental goes all housey.
nice little video/interview from The Big Chill event they did

Mount Kimbie - Crooks and Lovers [Hotflush]
Debut album has a name and coems out sometiem in July... Fact: 'No tracklist as yet, but the press release promises a record that touches on “the hard-earned spaces of Burial and The Bug”, “the berserk melodrama of Xiu Xiu and Grouper’s sad-eyed glow”, and “D’Angelo’s pervert soul cleansed in the intimacy of Phil Elvrum’s Microphones, Angelo Badalamenti’s swollen ‘Twin Peaks’ atmospheres find a cradle in Madlib’s lax lope.” Bet Madlib never knew his ears were so en vogue'

That is a lot of namedropping
and promises. I personally can't wait. Love all those mentioned. Love Mount Kimbie.

I know DiS did a news story t'other day with the tracklist but RA have the front cover and a new track to listen too.
Haha - 'post-dubstep'!
I always worry about hype and stuff, but i suppose you can't stop that. Can't wait for this, just put the date in my diary. I might try and avoid any other mention of them from now on, just so my expectations don't get forced up too high.
check the buns

post-dubstep has been knocking around for a while as a phrase but I think everyone hates it. Its just no-one knows what the hell to call anything at the moment, there isn't a short phrase that doesn't sound shit that fits. Bass music is sticking more but that sounds a bit boring, less anoying than post-dubstep though.
I didn't even think to look at the cover - baby got back!
Yeah, post-dubstep makes sense i suppose, i just think those genre names always sound silly. Neo-2-step? UK-space-garage? Maybe the names are as inevitable as the hype.
wow really loving that new track
I see on RA there they're advertising a Plan B night next week with Mt Kimbie, Joy Orbison and Scuba all playing.
i've never been to a dubstep night before but that is basically my three favourite dubstep-esque acts all playing on one night so i figure i should give it a go.
whats Plan B like? more importantly whats brixton like at 4am for a drunk indie white boy on his own? :P
it's only a couple of minutes walk from the tube station, and, as far as I know, I've only been to Plan B a couple of times:
there are far rougher places in London than Brixton these days.
looks good that gig though, might try and make it down myself.
You should definitely go
I'm going along, Appleblim and Sigha are both playing as well. One of the best dubstep-ish line-ups I've seen in ages.
I've not been to Plan B before but I've heard good things, and to be honest I've not had many problems in that area before, so you should be fine...
Got a promo of this yesterday
First impressions, from the first five tracks or so, is :O
'Blind Night Errand' is some gorgeous, upbeat garage, but the rest so far matches the downtempo feel of most of their music. Production's spot on as well, everything feels beautifully spaced out - less lo-fi than the Maybes EP, it matches the slight sheen of Sketch On Glass but without losing the rough and ready feel.
Several listens should tell more but sounds like a good 'un.
Is it just me who's kinda hating on the cover art though? In-joke much?
the cover is a bit...
http://www.hilman.web.id/foto/posting/FATBOY-SLIM-You-ve-come-a-long-way-baby.jpg
mixed with the aesthetic of: http://lastsplash.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/ddg.jpg
haha
Hahaha
I was trying to remember what it reminded me of, it was Fatboy Slim.
...
...
Hmm.
haha
I'm just glad the music doesn't.
Wait til you hear the last hidden track on the album
It's the Kimbie big beat tribute. BIG CHOON

nabbed the album a couple of days ago
I'm even starting to enjoy the "hotflush recordings promo copy" woman. It's very nice and reminds me more than a little of the Books. Which is obviously brilliant.
so have i
she seems like a nice lady.
the album also seems excellent..
interview

really?
I could understand the not being into Scuba's beats so much as he keeps them more driving and likes to get a techno groove going at times. But Mount Kimbie aren't as stright up as that. They bump around with garage/R&B and general electronic freakery and go all over the place. Get out to a club and hear this stuff there and you'd get more of an idea, its kinda like the diffrence between listening to suno))) on ipod headphones to seeing them live. I just think you don't like electronic music. The other EP is really diffrent too, more organic and less electronic sounding and has that post-rock noisey edge to it. The album even has live instruments all over it. One day you might dig some electronics... but I guess its dad rock for you now man ;)
I don't really hear the simularites there man
Shackleton uses loads of tribal purcusion, bruial usues 2-step rhythms and worriedabouitsatan have recently been using a techno kinda pump.
Is it a dance music thing then? did you like house music at all even in the early 80s when it was super fresh?
I don't see how these electronic beats are any more cliche than anyone using beats rock bands included. Just wondering really cos I know a lot of people get hung up on propulsive electronic beats and its a cool way to explore it by seeing how you dig it.
pretty apt...

http://blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.com/2010/06/greatest-rhythms-in-dubstep-part-2.html
Blackdown has been finding killer rhythms and just stuck up part two... Might shine a light, dunno...
he's not put a youtube on the second one...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isbaXOdMFvA&feature=player_embedded
you can hear it there for those that don't have it.
Just out of interest, Mr C, what do you mean exactly by the 'same old beats'?
As in, a 4/4 time signature? Imho, the sort of broken beats being used by a lot of this set aren't a whole lot like anything else, while still working within the framework of dance music. And that's still what it is, to all intents and purposes - dance music - or at the very least where it first came from.
Fair play
I guess I judge by a different set of criteria to yourself :)
It's been about for a while, but I've only just found it
new Mount Kimbie remix of the wonderful Andreya Triana

XLR8R have just put one of my favourite tracks from the album up for download
'Field', which is lovely and guitar-based, and sounds a bit like the cousin of 'Maybes'
http://www.xlr8r.com/mp3/2010/06/field
is that the one that was up on P4k?
where it all stops and comes back in halfway through with the layers of swirly guitars? i love that one! was sooo good live too! :D
album out soon eh? now i cant remember if i already pre-ordered it somewhere or not. hate it when that happens!
Yeah it is, I didn't know they'd had it up on P4k actually...
Yeah it was amazing at Plan B, I think that was my favourite bit (other than possibly Maybes, which was awesome).
Yeah it's out in a couple of weeks I think... Looking forward to getting a non promo copy on vinyl, so I don't have the Hotflush Recordings lady chattering to me while I listed to it!

I like their mixes...this one is a bit similar to the one at the top of the thread (do they not own any other Xela?!) but yeh, it'll be good anyway.
I need to listen to the album a couple more times I think, but on first listen it sounds great and confident and works well as a whole, but doesn't have as many 'Oh shit!' moments as the Eps do, but maybe they'll come. Stand-out track: the one after Field that I can't remember the name of.
Mayor
is the track, its so good, prob my fave. Field and Carbonated are awsome too. Its mostly gold though.
I don't think they DJ very much so I guess thats why there are some simular tracks and all that. Cool to see them put out another mix its been a while.
Mayor's definitely the standout
I'm kinda loving Before I Move Off as well. It's just got something weirdly jerky and chilled all at once...
yeh, that's cool. i like these sorts of mixes anyway.
and all those dubs are pretty pleasing to see.
listening now. really nice actually - good set of dubs
also, RA review which I'd pretty much agree with
I'd say 4/5 so far. Not sure I'd go all the way up DiS' 9/10 but it's a grower so...
video for Would Know
along with the Blawan video dubstep peeps seems to have got into the whole thing...weirdly
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Fnv1CpfMq8
i still can't work out whether the director chap in this is an elaborate in-joke
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MxnwxZOAng
really nice review on p4k today too
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/14412-crooks-lovers/
glad its getting picked up all over, they deserve it.
I'm really feeling it, it keeps on growing on ya, its a strange beast. Its only 35mins so you can breeze thru it easily but you still feel like you're digging in and exploring it still.
Good to see it in the neptune prize running too. Alongside Ikonika, Acress always seems to be missing though... He's awsome.
oh yeah!
the cover doesn't look as bad in the flesh, its still looks like its the girlfriend of the dude from that Fatboy Slim album cover: http://guarico.com.ve/POP/fatboy.jpg crossed with the latest indie covers, but it doesn't look as rubish somehow. I was suprised. It looks alright.
works well with the inner sleeve i think
kind of puts it into context innit.
Bores of Canada
this remix by Instra:mental is absolutely amazing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhaI4dFkWPY
yeah I love it
those two remix EPs are really good, every one is on point.
They where on the guardian music podcast this week: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/audio/2010/aug/11/music-weekly-skream Skreams on too.
Instra:mental are amazing in general too

He played a blinder the other night at Fabric too
He played Claptrap and Work Them at what sounded like about 160bpm it was ridiculous haha.
They played at set on 6 music last night
Tom Ravenscroft show
About 1hr 43 in, for about 25 minutes. It was cracking stuff
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00tc6nr
nice
might be one of the first times I've acctualy wanted to listen to something on 6 music with music in it instead of comedy. Is this dude new? and John Peels son? Didin't expect to see Kingdom and Lil Silva on a 6music track list.
good stuff actually.
mix from the machinefabriek track into the slowed-down version of 50 mile view is lovely...a couple of the others are a bit functional, more a showcase mix for people who haven't them before rather than one for the heads...but good all the same
the tracklisting is wrong though
they played "would know" and it's not on there?
Anyone else tried to work out what bit of London
the cover photos were taken?
I have and I can't.
its in
peckham, rye lane.
done a bit for xlr8r and RBMA

They
were good tonight! Not mind blowing but certainly a good show
Somehow that just about works.
Not sure about the deodorant can solos though. What a dickhead.
he had to do the deodorant can solo cos he left his lynx effect peddle at home
he's a right tard
*I'll get my coat*
New Mount Kimbie EP - Blind Night Errand
New Mount Kimbie awesomeness on the way

post includes a link to download a free (legit) copy of Maybes live from Berghain, Berlin.
played Maybes on my 6mix last night
didn't get to introduce the tracks at the end as it was more of "mix" but if i did, i would dedicate it to Jimi and this thread
http://bbc.in/aJiPFX
Thats the first time I've seen this
nice one sean :D
that mix is here

(Peter Van Hoesen remix)
it's my favorite track of the new EP
But "Baves Chords" is also a very interesting piece of work.
Second album not far off
http://www.factmag.com/2012/10/11/its-been-a-great-experience-mount-kimbie-on-signing-to-warp-and-their-upcoming-second-album/
On Warp records. Looking forward to that, seems like they've been away for a while. Warp looking good for albums with this and Darkstar on the way.
Anyone else going tonight?
