Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr's band Electronic... wat
Should I feel like a dunce for not knowing this ever happened? It seems like the kind of thing people would talk about more often, unless it was complete shit. It's, like, New Order and the Smiths, and even the guy from Kraftwerk... NEW ORDER AND THE SMITHS AND KRAFTWERK IN THE SAME BAND DOING SONGS.
Anybody else not know about this? Am I a stoopid n00b? Is it worth getting?
n00b
B00n
They made two albums didn't they?
3
plus a best of
Worth a look?
worth a download off pirate bay maybe
the first one is OK
"It seems like the kind of thing people would talk about more often, unless it was complete shit."
...bingo.
Electronic are miserable. Marr and Sumner pretty much slumming it. I'm certain they're only rated because of who they are/once were.
NEW ORDER AND THE SMITHS AND KRAFTWERK IN THE SAME BAND DOING SONGS
AND THE PET SHOP BOYS AND THE WOMAN FROM THE HAPPY MONDAYS THAT DID X FACTOR!!!!
First albums good the other two are patchy. The Best of's properly your best bit.
AND JOY DIVISION

The Other Two
Johnny Marr said he was going out his way not to do any 'jangly'
typically Marr guitar playing, and Sumner was trying to do 60s guitar music. So basically neither were playing to their strengths. There's your problem right there, to quote every handyman ever.
Huh... attempting to escape from what made them popular with the public, but doing it publicly.
Silly boys.
Found the Best Of and I'll give it a listen. Fingers crossed. For a moment there, I was breathless and scared I'd been missing out on some awesome awesomeness out of inattention, but I've got quite low expectations now.
^Obviously commendable trying new things
Just don't thing it came off throughout the three albums, is all I was saying. Getting Away With It is definitely worth the whole endeavour alone though.
Sorry I wasn't being sarcastic, I was agreeing with you that it's always quite foolhardy to try what they tried.
Oh God do I come across as sarcastic on the internet? Am I being sarcastic now? This is Hellish business.
My fault
I've been sarcastic for so long I don't even know when I'm being serious, let alone anyone else, let alone text on a computer screen...
Happy New Year! (really)
Are you being sarcastic? Do you want me to die, is that what you're saying?
I once actually accidentally kindof dumped my girlfriend on msn by being too sarcastic, she started crying and stuff. Internet R srs bsns.
That's impressive sarcasm right there.
How did you know she was crying?!
Did she type this :'(
She stopped typing for ages and then was like, 'why are you being like this?' and stuff.
Also once I told her I thought I might be gay for some lulz and she started crying as if I had confirmed some suspicions of hers haha great girl, great girl! I'm not a dick though... honestly.
First album
especially Some Distant Memory, Patience of a Saint and Getting Away With It = Absolutely amazing and exactly what you'd think it would sound like and almost THAT good.
The rest of the albums = forget it. Dreadfully overproduced anorak rock meets weedy overproduced late period new order only crapper.
And to clarify farther
Getting Away With It = http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Fc1N0QrG1hM&feature=related
Patience of a Saint = http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=oBCTBUgJanA
OH MY GOD THEY USED TO PLAY THAT FIRST ONE IN DEBENHAMS WHEN I WORKED THERE
This song kept me sane for weeks, but I never bothered to find out who it was by. I think they might've editted out the tacky Spanish-holiday-restaurant-guitar-guy solo though.
people pretend it never happened for a reason
I do love the fact...
that when they used to draft Neil Tennant in (who is a fantastic lyricist), they still had Bernard Sumner write the lyrics (who once wrote "Love/It's like honey/you can't buy/it with money". And clearly isn't a fantastic lyricist)
The lyrics on "The Patience of a Saint" are oddly charming though
"Why should I care? I'd rather watch drying paint..."
.
I'd beg to differ. Whilst Sumner has written some awful lyrics he's also done some amazing ones too. A great guitarist too though not many people realise.
Hello, how are you?
.
Alright, can you email or what at the moment?
Off my work address, did you get one off me the other day?
Yeah,
I replied to it. Just replied to the one you sent me now.
I'm not receiving them, fuck...
Might have to just take the risk with the usual Yahoo account then...
.
Try it if you can, or just use the mail on here.
Just listening to Electronic radio on LastFM - Electronic was followed by PSB and now The Shamen - Ebeneezer Goode
Getting Away With It
is one of the best songs ever. The rest is not.
^^^
I was thinking "getting away with it" was one of the worst songs ever and trademark dull sumner cliched lyrics and delivery with production making it sound like johnny hates jazz, the rest of their work could be genius but this song made me damn the entire project. Convince me otherwise...!
Well
first of all, you probably have to accept that Sumner lyrics are Sumner lyrics. I fucking love New Order but... Bernard Sumner is not a great lyricist most of the time (I maintain Regret has some good lines)
Beyond that, I don't know. It's just really fucking good to sing along to and I love the string outro and both of the choruses are great and I love Him From The Pet Shop Boy's vocals on it and the keyboards are great.
Maybe you just don't like A Certain Type of Pop Music and I do? There is... there is nothing wrong with that.
The second album had 2 great singles
with For You and Forbidden City. The third album didn't seem to make any kind of impression on me.
I'm still a little surprised their failure isn't discussed more
particularly considering DiSers infamous ability/desire to remove halos from deified musicians.
Maybe it sucked so hard it hurt to even remember such things.
There's plenty to go at otherwise with both, though
Sumner's lyrics and the last New Order album, Marr's vocal ability and stage banter with Modest Mouse.
they were not a failure you fucking idiots... go and check, they had loads of 5 star great reviews and one no.1 and two top 5 albums as far as i remember.
just go and listen "prodigal son" - their 8 minute classic - off the "twisted tenderness". "disapointed" a classic with pet shop boys.
they are just unfashioned now. but i'm sure no one will remember fucking rollo tomassi or the last animal collective shit, they will be remembered with those wonderful 12 inches.
Be quiet you enraged imbicile.
It's a good decade along and the project's existence has clearly faded into the complexity of time and memory. I will, however, gladly champion their brilliance if their music moves me to do so.
Hey cool your jets there Starsky
We're all gonna be remembered for our wonderful 12 inches, am I right?! Eh? Eh?
Just me then.
let us not forget
the John Barnes rap on world in motion.
so it never happens agin.
The first Electronic album is virtually flawless.
If you like the house-y side of New Order, i.e. the upbeat tracks on Technique, then it's definitely for you. The Marr guitar playing is largely unremarkable but what he does play suits the songs perfectly. Apparently, when they got together, Barney was hoping to make a guitar-based record in a Smithsy vein, while Johnny wanted to do the New Order-ish dance/synth stuff that they ended up doing on that record. Coupled with the PSB input, it's a genuine supergroup classic.
The other stuff I've only heard bits of but wasn't blown away. That 'For You' song annoyed me immensely at the time.
They were better than Monaco though
this thread is all kinds of wrong.
all 3 electronic albums were ace, although the second one had some dodgy moments. go back and listen to them again people.
the first 3 tracks on twisted tenderness are pure class
not enough Neil Tennant
you can never have enough Neil Tennant!
