I think he uses two tape decks, and presses play and pause really really fast.
Also good for his live set up, due to their portability

It sounds like it takes a really musical ear to make it sound that good though, see also GAS.
but then I have been messing around on demos of it since I was at school about 10 years ago. I'm still shit on it though, but I'm hoping to make something good within the year!
I don't know anything about this type of software (for making / manipulating sounds + adding beats), but what's a good package to use if you aren't a pro / semi-pro music maker? I mean like something I'd actually be able to understand and use within a relatively short space of time. I have a very short attention / patience span.
atleast by comparison to some of the programs you see around, once you get used to the basic layout/functions its pretty easy to use, all you need then is tallent to actually do somthing good with it though.
and really overuse the beat repeat feature.
then I shouldn't bother recommending Cubase (which I just did).
I thought it was more complex than it actually is. Managed to make this little thing here:
