Ok here's the story. When i was 15 and expanding my musical horizons beyond The Manics, The Clash and the Sex Pistols, there was a lad 4 years older than me who i played in a few bands with, and he acted as a kind of guru musically. He gave me a load of awesome records, many of which i still class as my favourites to this day; Surfer Rosa, Eggnog EP, Goat, Songs About Fucking, Damaged, Raw Power, Nurse, to name but a few.
He also gave me the Sonic Youth albums Goo, Sister and Washing Machine. I methodically worked my way through everything he gave me and liked it all, except Sonic Youth. There were certain songs that i liked but i could never sit and listen to a whole album.
As i got older, i realised how cannonised Sonic Youth were and thought maybe there was something wrong with me. I bought Experimental Jet Set Trash and Daydream Nation and played them repeatedly. Still no luck.
I'm 22 now and just sat through the full length Diamond Sea, which went down brilliantly on a dark, hungover sunday night. However, try as i might, i can't say i like Sonic Youth as a whole. Odd moments of genius but far too much wanking about in between. I take issue with their quality control.
So here we are, 7 and a half years later and it's finally struck me that i don't like Sonic Youth. I've tried, god knows i've tried. People always say about bands that you don't like "give them a chance". Well, they've had 88 months to impress me, and so far they've failed.
Am i doing it wrong?
