best album of '08
my lipgloss is poppin'
fully endorse op's sentiment ^5
alongside hilarious samples so middle class indie boys can listen to it under the guise of irony. completely incoherent and pointless, why not just listen to UGK, lil wayne, jeezy, TI straight up instead? guess its not as funny or irreverent that way ho ho!
you presume I like this ironically? It's really great. Fuck off you greasy bore.
the original tracks are better than their inclusion on the album. this is true for pretty much every single hip hop a capella on there. lots of it genuinely sounds out of tune and terrible, and the dude's a hack. maybe if there was some coherent thread tying any given track together, but the guy can't actually construct a whole song, its just one thing after another haphazardly slapped together.
the best thing he ever did was the first half of the first track on night ripper where he keeps the ludacris a cappella going over tons of different samples and makes new beats out of them rather than just putting as many things in so people can go "hohoho its sinead o connor and some bad man rapping on top, how hilariously tasteless!". of course he ruins it when he drops it and goes all ADD, randomly jumps between samples and then puts ying yang twins over bittersweet symphony and its so fuckin' funny y'all!
fuck that shit man, he can't put a decent track together, everything is a hodgepodge of 30 second decent ideas. huge swathes of people like it solely because there's "funny" hip hop against "sincere" samples. i'd be inclined to think you're one of those bros unless you can articulate yourself better than "fuck off you greasy bore"
instead of thinly veiled insults; discussions about the actual music is fine
part of the submissive bdsm persona that's bubbling uncomfortably under the surface of my psyche
it's just really obnoxious, and I can see how that would piss people off
or the way people might think its funny. off the top of my head
lil mama over metallica
TI over sinead o connor
ying yang twins over the verve
like half his schtick is putting tasteless/inappropriate/stupid hip hop lyrics over tracks which are sincere/inappropriate/heartfelt/whatever. this in itself isn't bad, and people like the hood internet do great stuff with this because they make new beats out of the other tracks and it usually sounds great. its just he can't string it out for longer than 30 seconds at a time
the hood internet are pretty good though. I don't mind the switching about so much, though it would probably be better if that happened more later on in the album (I was being a wee bit facetious in the op)
The Rich Boy/Aphex Twin mix aside, every track seems like the crudest, most ill fitting attempt at juxtaposition he can muster.
totally awesome album.
Im heavily under the impression that girl talk is some guy who cracked ableton live and downloaded the 6gb rap & rnb accapella torrent.
albums are all much better produced than the original samples though, so I think its a little unfair to call him talentless, although his schtick is easily impersonated with Ableton.
Before the release of FTA I would have argued that his sense of energy and tempo put him ahead of other "mashup" djs, but FTA goes limp on the first song and never seems to pick the pace back up, the momentum is much poorer than Nightripper or various live bootlegs ive heard. Lazerlife's point about ironic enjoyment of rap music is also true to an extent, but to be fair if its the verve and ying yang twins, both suck so no one loses out.
It's more of a mixtape than an album really
It's quite good fun to stick on when ya drunk and gettin ready to go out but not much more, I think Soulwax did it better as did most propper hiphop DJs since the late 70s heheeh
