Solid list on the whole
Although Department of Eagles languishing down in the 40's?! *shakes head in disbelief*
what with all the changes at PS
could this be the final ever end of year run down?
I dearly hope not
Earls' 2002 rundown was the thing that first inspired me to check out music beyond the nu-metal my friends were listening to.
Are they scared of loud distorted guitars or something?
hmmm
"scared of loud distorted guitars" = "has good taste"
!
"scared of loud distorted guitars" = "probably a eunuch"
*hero
People still read teletext?
I thought you were a Tindersticks fan...
the one place i thought the Sticks might get a mention and zilch. Bring back Paul Goddard, all is forgiven!! Though the list could be worse i suppose.
Good list in general
The number ones...
comprised my favourite album of the year and one of my least-liked singles. One out of two ain't bad.
solid album list, good all rounder.
single list leaves something to be desired.
Just as boring as all the other ones.
yeah, no Best of Brusma Vol.4
what the fuck is up with that?
Not as boring as
People moaning about all the end of years lists being boring (which is essentially code for "It's nothing like my list").
look
end of year lists are one of two things
1. boring
2. shit
deal with it.
do people still use teletext?
Yes
It's on Digital TV etc now and you can see Planet Sound online anyway.
Ah, Mr Earls.
Though I dearly love what you do, and agree with more often than I disagree with you, I will never, EVER come close to understanding your bizarre love for The Maybes?.
mtfu teletext
Fine stuff indeed Mr Earls
A few things I could take issue with (No 'In Ghost Colours' in albums (I know singles inclusion disqualifies them, but...) Or Death Vessel or Okkervil River?) but generally great. 'Black And Gold' is brilliant, agreed, and nice to see Mumford And Sons, JAPW and Get Well Soon get some end of year recognition.
What does "mtfu" stand for?
I don't see how anyone can't love The Maybes?. I know this next sentence is generally the last refuge of the scoundrel, but... "Have you seen them live? It makes sense then."
Death Vessel album has passed me by, I must admit. Okkervil River just missed out. It's good, but it's no Stage Names.
I'm not a massive Tindersticks fan, no. Stuart's voice generally grates by the end of a whole album. If you threw the rest of their career away apart from Travelling Light, I wouldn't grieve. If that means the return of Paul Goddard, so be it, though Stephen Eastwood would be a far better returning PS editor.
Do check out Death Vessel John!
It's underwhelming to begin with (apart from being wondrously pretty) but very good indeed. Seemed to get roundly passed by actually, but sure hope his time will come. I agree Stand Ins isn't quite Stage Names quality, but; well, I just love them very much (!).
very un-inspiring list
I quite like Flight of the Conchords though they are fun.
p.s. mtfu stands for Man The Fuck Up.
Dull as dishwater
albums list is solid
the singles list is a bit of a trainwreck though
i prefer ceefax.
Not an incredibly exctiting list,
nice to see Broken Records so high up in the singles though.
The best list of anywhere
Inclusive enough to draw fans of more mainstream bands in, and then hits you with a near perfect top 20 album list. Earl is to Teletext what Jesus is to Christianity, and I pray that he makes a full return in a similar manner some time in the near future.
I'm torn between
praising Earls for sticking to what he knows and likes, and having the balls to continue to promote those bands rather than putting in Santogold or someone at the top because Nathan Barleyites like it; and slagging him off because what he likes is so rubbish. 60-70% of that list is insipid, unthreatening verse-chorus-verse nonsense with the bare minimum of ideas and excitement. Subjective schmubjective, are you really saying that a good 200 albums more interesting than Elbow weren't released this year?
I think Elbow are one of the best aspects of the list
They're a great band and it's a great album
So yeah I'm personally saying Elbow was one of the best albums of the year - they're not Animal Collective (and I love Animal Collective), they may not reinvent the wheel, but that doesn't make their record any less good.
Vampire Weekend is the album of the year, hands down
Nice to see someone else hasn't joined the wholesale backlash against them on here
