This any good?
Worth a purchase?
I did enjoy it although it's not all new material, I'd read some of it before in his blogs on myspace or in lyrics to his songs, so some of the stories seem a bit needless for someone who's already familiar with his work. Also the lyrics to quite a few of his songs are reprinted in their entirity, which could either be considered helpful to uber fans or a bit lazy in bulking out the book. I wouldn't want to put you off it because I did enjoy it, but I did feel like it could have been better if he'd taken longer, not repeated past writings/ works and expanded a little on his subject matter from his songs and embraced the novel form to a greater degree as it is in a way (or appears to be) just a selectively arranged diary.
here's a link to some reviews of it:
i think a few of them sum it up pretty well. especially the one from "san diego city beat"
some of the reviews are just plain info-less and shit but a few of them work pretty well. though, really, when it comes down to it I'm sick of hearing people's opinions about art. seems like everybody's a critic nowadays, huh?
when i met him i asked him 'so what's the book about'?
and he said, 'that's probably the worst question you can ask somebody who's written a book.'
Reccomended from me
i mean, i guess i didn't offer my own opinion, but yeah, i loved it. felt really alive and raw unlike a lot of books I've read (and enjoyed) which feel like product.
what I wanna know, however, is what's his next record, trailerparks, like? friend of mine downloaded it (yes, illegally!) and said it's 'really fucking unsettling,' which could be good or bad. not a big fan of the unsettling, myself. liked xui xiu for a while, not anymore. maybe I'm getting old
maybe they still have a few, might be worth asking them.
It's a great album, and it didn't unsettle me much.
to try and find some of his more limited stuff online, 'Palaces' seems to be a rare upload.
is my favourite. it's a short-un, only five songs but it's quite good. very lowfi and closer to psychefolk than any of his fullband stuff. and it has providence, my favourite of all
ive really got to get my hands on it, although you say its only five songs? Didnt he release two parts of it or something, so it would be around 10 in total?
yeah it was released as "Palaces/Whidbey Island" with the Whidbey Island side being the 2nd part. It was a two CD set packaged together. the music is totally different though. the whidbey island one is him collaborating with an acoustic guitarist called david cristian who plays almost all the music. behind it is all field recordings from the island.
the set came out on limited-edition cd then was supposed to be on vinyl but i think the label it was going to come out on went out of business or something.
palaces is noisy and more low fi but it has more variety. i think palaces is the summer record and whidbey island is either fall or winter. at least they feel that way. palaces is really warm and colourful and WI is kind of chilly. wow i feel like i'm writing a record review so i'm gonna stop
and i've heard him read from it. its ok. i guess i'm just not that excited about it in this form because when he writes a book, you have to compare him to other authors. in that respect, it isn't great; its pretty retrospective and kinda played out. but as part of music, its great because other people aren't really doing what he's doing.
skimming is definitely the best way to form a solid opinion. very modern of you.
i also heard him read from it, which gives enough to form an opinion and also to realise that its pretty similar to his stuff on records. with that information, its pretty easy to then say that it isn't so great because without the music, his writing just isn't really interesting enough to be especially of note. i mean, it isn't terrible or incompetent or anything, but its just pretty played out.
but seriously ...... trailerparks.... who's got a pirated copy they wanna email me? i know you're out there
i recommend, i think it's quite cheap too?
from what I've read the trailer parks copies on tour were the only ones that will be available until the record comes out officially in '09. not sure what part of '09. that's why i'm hoping to steal it off somebody.
"hard going," huh? really hard going stuff like that gets me a little too depressed these days (early bright eyes at al) but i read the "making of the record" thing he wrote and it got me interested. unsettling with some hope towards the end makes it easier for me.
here's that making of trailerparks from the awesome 405blog
i'm not sure they all sold.
cool. thankie. guess it means paying for music, but i shall do that!
