I know it's a pretty vague topic, but does anyone have any recommendations?
It's a really entertaining read, he lives in Mali with musicians the whole time. I thought there would be loads about Ali Farka Toure but he's only covered a little bit but it's interesting enough without him really. There are a few weird characters!
but there are loads of Rough Guide books on all sorts of African music - just stick the words "rough guide african music" into Amazon to see what I mean! My library has Vols 1&2 of their "World Music" series; Vol.1 covers Africa, Europe & the Middle East and is actually a pretty great overview/introduction. Obviously with such an immense subject you're not gonna fit everything into one book, but it has chapters on every country, with breakdowns of key artists/genres and recommended albums for each - certainly enough to keep you going for a good while before you need to moan about omissions.
Dunno if that's the kind of book you want though - hardly narrative, it's more an dip-in-and-out encyclopaedia...
