really cool living room gigs - pretty horrible?
Like this. I just saw it on someone's profile:
http://images.drownedinsound.com/resized_images/190x190/31935.jpeg
Everyone sits / stands there in silence as someone sings really heartfelt songs and tries not to make eye contact with any of them.
I find this sort of thing really really gay. Its not a social thing is it? Its like some silly ritual or something. Seems so false how everyone's all like "Oh man, this guy is so cool. That song was beautiful" as opposed to just "woo let's have fun"

Posts on here occasionally.

just had a look on his myspace..
"DISCLAIMER: for the record, if you illegally download my music, and I find about it, and for some reason we meet, I will tear your throat right out of your body with my bare hands."
Is he really such a massive cnut?
have you heard the music on his myspace?
Scouting for Girls-lite.
Why is every picture him standing by a piano, looking forcibly awkward, with a small group of people near looking really awkward?
he's obviously in love with Ben Folds.
look at him in his bedroom, he even has a poster of him.
Bitch ain't shit.
He used to be the self-appointed king
of the Worcester music scene.
Which is as lame is it sounds.
^ I recall this guy from my days in the Shire.
This thread made me lol. Bigtime.
Tear someone's throat out?!
He plays a keyboard.
A keyboard.

Remember that Talking Heads best of that came a few years ago
and on the cover it was them playing in someone's living room?
Yeah, I'd prefer a fun dance party where everyone's jiving and the room is swinging. Woo let's have fun!
what about this in your front room?

HAHAHAHA IT GETS FUNNIER EVERY TIME
Horrible
What about this in your front room?

fucking hell he is fucking shit
I like the fact that someone pointed out his piano mistake on the video ^^ haha
haha oh dear
he's just setting himself up with that title + the lyrics
that's fucking abysmal
...
I suppose you have a point if we accept that any of the following premises are true:
- Something can be cool and horrible at the same time.
- Living room party protocol demands that everyone must stand still and in silence throughout.
- Listening to a 'cool' person playing 'beautiful' music is not fun. Or at the very least, less fun than any other kind of music. Like mingers playing vomitcore.
- A 'social thing' and a 'silly ritual' are mutually exclusive. There are no social things that are also silly rituals.
Hiyar!
Living room gigs are a great way for an unknown band to get out there and play. I only did so many of them in 2006/2007 because it's a way of getting to play to new people every night. There are only so many DIY promoters to play shows for, and it's a good way of staying on tour and 'making a name for yourself' when you're not big enough to get proper gigs.
Anyway, what's 'gay' about them? If you'd bother to watch me play (which of course you won't, so don't bother with the easy retort) you'd discover that I don't stand there taking myself seriously. House gigs are just a laugh where you get to play your songs, drink beer, hang out with new people and make new friends (as opposed to a normal gig where people don't really talk to complete strangers, in general).
OTHER POINTS:
Also, Scouting For Girls-lite? Uh, no.
Yes, there's a Ben Folds poster in my room. Sorry. Was it meant to be Belle & Sebastian?
Sitting on the floor looking awkward? Sitting is comfortable.
Gay jokes? How old are you? Five?
And now I'm spent, so you can continue taking the piss.
lol ur shit
Speediest vanity-google ever!
awsome!
you read my mind!
Or maybe
I post on these forums every once in a while. Dick.
that's a bit harsh, Luke Leighfield
whad i ever do to you?
Uh, yes.
You're spent after that? You're rubbish.
...
that's mean
I always thought
Ben Folds Five posters were better than Ben Folds posters.
Anyway, why do you hold so much scorn for illegal downloaders of your music?
They are
but sadly I don't have any. I have a big thing against illegal downloading. I don't do it 'cause I see it as the same as stealing, and I don't like people doing it with my music. It's just my opinion!
fair enough
im a big advocate of downloading music illegally to be honest. I won't lie and say I'll buy the CD if I really like it, because I don't play CDs, BUT I will go to a show and buy a tshirt, and tell my friends about them. And in turn, I would never hold it against anyone for illegally downloading my music.
especially these days
most acts would have a fraction of the fan base were it not for downloads
true dat
go download everything i've ever made off hypem.com
i'll shake your hand
could you just upload a zip file for me to download it all please?
for serious.
is he in a band? are they a band that i might know?

How can you be proud of how you act / look / sound in that video?
You sound like a gigantic posh horse.
that's so bad it makes me angry
RULE ONE OF BEING IN A BAND AND POSTING ON DROWNEDINSOUND.COM:
Unless somebody's questioning your parentage or sexual prowess:
SHUT UP AND SUCK IT UP, MAN.
forcing him to fellate you isn't going to get you ANYWHERE in my books.
hehe
You fucking suck Luke Leighfield
Luckily, your music was forgettable, so I won't have to keep thinking about how much it sucked. Fuck you.
And you're gay.
That looks kinda lame- why's everyone sitting down?
My experience of living room gigs is much better.. cobbling together as many hi-fis as possible to make a makeshift PA system, people perched on amps, microphones taped to brooms.. and definitely no sitting down or heartfelt songs.
i want pantera to play in my house, it would be like the i'm broken video
Oh my gosh!
That is SO indie!
lol luke leighfield
*lolk lolfield
Luke Neighfield (as in 'neigh-horse')
Luke! Horse field! (as in "Look! A field with horses in it!"

good work

I Love geoff horsfield
i call him the horse
Isn't it the other way around?
Gigs in people's living rooms = "oh cool a bunch of friends, some music, w00t this whole set-up is full of win."
Gigs in (phenomenon increases as they get bigger) venues- "ooh wow this is so deep. I have to justify paying loads of money for this and standing around for an hour and a half watching by finding this a deeply meaningful experience."
If anything? (I mean there is a happy middle ground where you go to a nice small gig but let's not nitpick here)
imagine luke leighfield playing in your house
Let's leave Luke Leighfield out of this
He's having a bad evening of it.
It's fine
I've got nothing to do for half an hour, then it's time to watch that 24 Redemption thing.
...
You might have a better time staying on this thread.

it was pretty much amazing.

amazing
:)
i love algernon
I went to the acest living room gig ever in Sheffield last night
Except no one was sitting down and it was full of drunk sweaty people.
i missed that to go to my flatmate's shit birthday party :(
was that the guy who puts on gigs in sheffield sometimes
i forget his name but i think i met him at reading.
yup, tommy :)
Was ace, Pulled Apart By Horses, Blakfish, Shoes and Socks Off and Wintermute, you definitely made a mistake there Matt.
Ahh
that was an awesome party! House parties with bands are definitely not lame.
People on here can be such genuine shites sometimes.
Grow up, the vast majority of you.
i'd like to go to a living room gig
because sitting on a comfy brown couch during a gig once was thoroughly enjoyable :D
huh?
people only started being particularly mean when he started defending himself. if he'd just grinned and bared it, not even half of that would have happened.
It happens to loads of bands, every day.
I think in this case, I'd entitle him a defence.
I like wrighty, I guess, but this is such a cattish little swipe. Just because people are in a band doesn't mean they should have to let people fling poo at them. I know, I know, opening yourself and your work up to an audience means you have to be prepared for anything etc etc....But sometimes it really gets my goat. It just seems this attack was based on nothingness- not about his music or anything, just about him personally. I'm probably being a massive hypocrite here.
I just increasingly find that people on this site like dishing it out for the sake of it
we're all as guilty as each other.
and he did say some pretty stupid things. You just have to put up with it.
I know
This just irritated me.
Only human I guess.
indeed
pointless post and no need for all the shit towards luke that came after it.
can't we all just get along....
are people thinking this was done with the intention of luke seeing it?
was it?
No, but he picked a profile picture of a user on here as the basis of his criticism
Just to clarify, I really don't like Luke Leighfield's music at all.
but that's not the point.
ah, sorry, didn't realise it was from LL's profile.
I don't have a problem
with people not liking my music. It's not for everyone, no music is. My problem is that there was a load of stupid crap written about me. Petty swipes, cheap jokes, and painfully awful gay jokes.
24 Redemption was a letdown.
There were no gay jokes as far as I can see.
And I still think it's better not to get involved if you see people taking the piss out of you. It just spurs people on even more.
i think all gigs are pretty horrible.
if they were banned i wouldn't really be that bothered. Of course, i've been to a couple of good ones, but i had to get very VERY drunk to not want to leave, and that's nothing to do with the bands playing, i just find the idea of standing in a room with loads of people you don't know whilst bands you like play their songs badly, well, it's not very exciting, is it?
I'm starting to agree with you as I get older.
I far prefer drinks and dancing to drinks and standing still.
You two were made for each other
People do dance at gigs, y'know. Since I've come to London I've been to, by my reckoning, one gig where I haven't danced or anything. But that's cause it was Zach Hill.
it's frowned upon.
i'm too cool for dancing. I prefer to lean on the back wall supping a pint and checking my phone.
Depends.
A good live act will be better than they are on record.
I whole endorsely agree with this post.
It doesn't matter how "good" they are - a singer-songwriter in a living room is not fun. And sure as fuck isn't entertainment.
i guess they're all different though...
i don't think unless you were actually there at that gig/living room, that a picture can really tell you how the show was, be it a singer/songwriter, band, whatever...
some people enjoy them, some don't i guess but no need for it to turn so personal like it did here.
the houseshows i've been too have all been rowdy punk singalongs
with exciting bands ... i don't think luke would have quite the same effect as someone like apologies, i have none
Apologies, I have none are mint!
My band supported them in the tiniest bar in Oxford once, (that is to say that a living room would probably have been bigger) and they blew everyone away with their rowdy punk singalongs.
Anyways, continue...
Wow...
Welcome to another classic drownedinsound 'I think it's cool and clever to personally rip into an artist I don't like' thread. Ignorant dickheads is all I can say to users such as;
Too_black_too_strong - Seriously, over 11000 posts on `Drownedinsound - get a fucking life instead of continuously posting the links to Luke's videos and writing 'lol'). What do you achieve? Are you trying to provoke a reaction? Are you secretly hoping someone will say "My god, you are so correct, I think I love you, let's go out on a date". Bitching is weak and this makes you weak. Don't do it.
Heartbeeps - Is Luke not allowed to like Ben Folds? Go on, I dare your pitiful ignorance to say he sounds like Ben purely because he uses a piano. Also, it's such a shame that you think you're clever enough to come on here and personally slag Luke and then totally not realise the cryingly obvious hyperbole of his threat towards the clearly wrong and illegal action of downloading. At the end of the day, with illegal downloading, you can say ''If I like it I'll buy a cd'' but that's bullshit. Maybe a few people ACTUALLY mean that, but at the end of the day you're a classic example of a lazy thief who uses cheap justifications to steal. Don't do it. The artist didn't say you could so don't be so fucking disrespectful and inconsiderate. Would you try and get into a gig for free by trying to push past security guards? No you wouldn't so shut the fuck up with your shit excuses. If everyone does it, musicians won't be able to have a career and dedicate their time to being creative and bringing the world great music. At the end of the day, you will prevent many potential artists from showing the world their beautiful and creative music.
Gggg - you're right, Luke could have just grinned and bared it and it MIGHT have died away (there is also the chance you immature pricks would carry on polluting threads and giving this website a bad name by continuing to post such tripe), but is that justified? If you were in the school playground and someone would continuously be overly rude about your big ears would you just grin and bare it? You might, but at the end of the day it is wrong and if everyone had such a passive attitude no injustice would be solved in this world. Pathetic.
Finally, on the subject of house shows - the whole 'self-indulgent' aspect of it - isn't it just a downsized version of a concert - everyone glaring at the 'superpower' on stage and the self-indlugent artist getting money from this. If you think that is 'gay', then you disagree with concerts. Furthermore, all house shows vary, You can't generalise.
massive lol
Jesus, Mrs L!
No-one was really laying into Luke that harshly were they?
except for a couple of snide 1-liners...I've not heard his music, nor judged it but he bit my glans off for merely accusing him of a vanity google.
now a nice apology on headed paper and we can all forget about this.
headed SCENTED paper.
actually some of it was a bit mean
I'm on your side.
Fuck DiS

LOL
This is incredible
yeah, let's just not have an opinion on anything ever
:D
Im not reading this
I got William (the band) to play in my front room for me 21st. it was pretty sweet.
I don't like Ben Folds or Scouting for Girls
So Luke Leighfield to me seems dangerously near some sort of Musical Apocalypse.
this made me laugh like a big fat old man
the
person who started this thread by looking at other peoples profile pix and then posting it is the failure in my book. limp stalker
i don't think he knew that was luke in the picture
wrighty hadn't heard of him
^
Some of you are utter minges
Some people might enjoy having 'a gig', whether it's by a Cool Band or a singer/songwriter, in their front room to a bunch of their mates. Leighfield gets to tour out of it and meet new people and get fed and boozed - it's much more preferable to slogging it out in pissy Barfly venues to people who don't care I guess. It's a totally positive, fun thing even if it's not really the type of music you're into.
i'll play
anyone's living room
just make sure theres a party and i'm there
when my band get good enough to play i think we are gonna organise a house show in my living room
but it will be more like a house party with loads of people crammed into the room and people shouting their heads off for a little while.
it could be fun.
singalong punk houseshows are a lot of fun
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=euSOKkAmgK8
someone shot this at the last one i was at
nice work!
my girlfriend did one in her uni halls kitchen in her first year, which sounds like the funnest thing ever... i just like the idea of my living room being full of people singing along to us playing a bad version of 'tv party'
nahhhh
i saw someone do this a few weeks back. It was embarassing. Though, tbh, he was some pete doherty wannabe. He asked for requests and some girl asked for a Belle and Sebastian tune. He did the first two lines of The State I Am In before I laughed too loudly at him and had to leave.
I'd rather be the worst musician in the world
than the best piss-taker
that doesnt make sense though
Maybe to you
it doesn't.
well yeah given that i generally require stuff to have some essence of logic involved
:D
ah leave luke alone
he's really sweet and he wears great jumpers.
thats hardly a ringing endorsement
"great" is a pretty good endorsement for a jumper :-)
wrighty,the best music board troll?
i certainly think so
ps,@mass;LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

Isn't that like going to ANY gig in London? Fuckers never dance because of the arms folded BULLSHIT that is a London gig.
depends on the gigs you go to
This thread is one massive LOL
Oh, and I think this Deserves This:
AMAZING
SCENES
they're really good fun, man.
try putting one on. we've done a few this year and it's been lovely. had the bobby mcgees and babar luck play in our front room.
I like Babar Luck
So
Bitching and hate of my music aside, is anyone contemplating putting on a house show / trying to get a house show to play at? Does anyone have any cool stories about house shows that they've been to?
get out of my thread.
Seriously I'm not even joking. That "a woke up this moooooornin'" song was like having a tramp piss all over my ears.
I mean, an apology will do, but you've done damage.
oh dear...
you are a fucking idiot. He is trying to bring the thread back to its original purpose and you bring it back to its immaturity. Shame on you.
hahahahaha
Did you really need
to listen to his music with the sole purpose of telling him he's shit? Please go and do something constructive with your time if you're going to be that pointlessly nasty.
its fairly hard to reach any other conclusion
once youve listened to it to be honest. surely he should expect it? Lets come on to an infamously elitist music forum and try and convince them my sub-scouting for girls piano pop is where music is at.... hmmmmm, thats going to go down well.
it just kinda grates
that people use the internet to be insanely nobbish. The anonymity of it makes people be horrible. I guess that's kinda the point though...
You have no Idea how much i love you for that post wrighty
House gigs sound fun
There's a cool snippet of Lightning Bolt playing in some guy's kitchen on 'The Power Of Salad' DVD. I think the police stopped it though. A few people I know put on gigs in their cellar and they always sound like good fun. If you've got the room to do it and don't mind strangers coming into your house it's a brilliant alternative to paying to hire a venue.
amazing
scenes
I under the impression living gigs were the height of indie cool
Am I wrong? Personally never been to one. I hear there is alot in Dalston though.
p.s that guys music is drab
p.p.s no offense
*room
living room
gigs are fine and dandy, can be interesting and fun and novelty... invariably the sound is shit but the close proximity of everyone makes it quite intense and the band are out of their comfort zone and people can get free water without a huge queue and having to shout at a bar person and getting sparkling bottle and going no i really wanted tap and they cant hear you so you pay for it but dont drink it and stare at someone pretty but dont approach them cos you are all coy and shy a....(drifts off)...
pretty much
You can't get drunk because you're at someone else's house...which is fine, but mostly everyone else is quite drunk because it's their friend's house. I went to one by a singer-songwriter type, who was trying to create a kind of Wayne's World/Jools Hollands type cross-over in his flat - I think Hot Club de Paris and someone else reasonably well-known played. It's kind of like any gathering - better if you know a lot of people there, as opposed to hiding in the corner with your two friends who don't know anyone else either.
A more general point is by their nature, they're going to be pretty staid and invariably acoustic. A lot of the people there are going to be either intolerably smug or over-excited and like 'wow, this is the best thing I've ever been to' and over-doing it. The number of Swedish people will be depend on how twee the music is (1 - not very twee, 3- very twee). There will be many people wearing glasses.
So yeah, not at all my scene.
is your scene mostly bone crunching metal?
well, if i had to choose, metal for sure
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNBfC8Gax24
this is what i went to. imagine this, but happening in your real life without an 'x' button hovering the corner.
i like it when people have propergigs in the evening around their house (as opposed to little day affairs).
the music is good
i don't hate house gigs so much, they're okay really. it's nice that someone would open their house up to it. i just hate the air of reverence and the OHMIGOD THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL. i have that, just not when i'm squashed on the floor between smug people with blackplastic framed specs
yeah i know what you mean, i've been to a couple
and one was exactly like that "this is our tv show" thing. it's too much
Heh,
This clip is amazing: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Np5znPiqFSM
It takes until 3m14s before someone other than Emmy The Great appears who is not wearing glasses.
i've started wearing contact lenses when i go out for this very reason
LUKE:
Thanks for this thread. And say thanks to your "manager" for me. Seriously.

No problem

Until the day you stop using "gay" as derogatory slang
you will continue to undermine attempts to be the "arbiter of all that is right" that you so desire to be.
Don't be such a fag you big gay
be careful about living room shows
this is what happened in mine

No
Some of the best shows I've been to or played have been house shows.
Total standout: La Quiete, Catena Collapse, Mock heroic and Dan form Cat on Form at my house about four years ago. One of the best weekends of my life.
It's a turd? It's a pain? Not it's, LUKE LEIGHFIELD
Who?
Luke Leighfield
Oh yeah?
Luke Leighfield
On Halloween
I went to see Pete Doherty play an acoustic set in a tiny crack den in Whitechapel. I went with a mate who's borderline obsessed with him and everything to do with him, but it was intense and I had a pretty great time. He only played for like 40 minutes and he was out of it but it was sweet.
I also seen Future of the Left play in a flat in Camden a few months ago. Was allright.
im pretty jealous of this
It
was something else. Apparently he does quite a few, so you would most probably be able to catch him again.
