and wow, it's so much better than skeletal lamping.
I expected pompous indie twaddle from this album but it's grade A pop all the way. A sentence of sorts... is a melodic treat and The past is a grotesque animal is pure masterpiece!
and Cato as a pun is brilliant.
The only song on Skeletal that really comes close to matching the better songs on Hissing Fauna is Women's Studies Victims from 0:50 - 1:50. I love from 0:50 - "I didn't know what to think...". It's such a great vibe.
I would feel distinctly uncomfortable laying myself that bare on record but he completely empties his emotional sack, which I massively respect! Can't fault this album at all, I hope the follow up to Skeletal Lamping picks up where this left off...
he said the next album was liable to be quite metal(!?). I don't think he was joking, either...
hello friend, have you heard "The Sundlandic Twins"?
their best IMHO!
having heard every album of theirs, and EP, my list is.
1. The Gay Parade (Tie)
1. Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer (Tie)
3. Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies: A Variety of Whimsical Verse
4. Skeletal Lamping
5. Aldhils Arboretum
6. Sunlandic Twins
7. Satanic Panic in the Attic
8. The Bedside Drama: A Petite Tragedy
9. Cherry Peel
Roughly, it fluctuates, of course.
i could swap gay parade with sundlandic twins i'd be pretty much in agreement with you
I love The Gay Parade. I really with AllMusic calling it "The Sgt. Pepper" of indie-pop.
because im in agreement with the rest of the list
I guess maybe you like the "Dance Pop" sound more (AKA Sunlandic) and I like the goofy extreme indie pop sound more.
put sunlandic where skeletal is, and just shift skeleton to 5 and down etc.
and the bedside drama at 8!?!
Early of Montreal > Late of Montreal
(> mid of Montreal)
1. Cherry Peel
2. The Gay Parade
2. The Bedside Drama
3. Early 4 Track Recordings
4. Hissing Fauna
5. Sunlandic Twins
6. Skeletal Lamping
7. Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies: A Variety of Whimsical Verse
8. Satanic Panic in the Attic
9. Aldhils Arboretum
that hissing fauna and gay parade are their best 2 albums
Gay Parade wins out
HAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HEY ITS THE MARCH OF THE GAY PARADE!
... and it struck me how flat and tinny the production is compared to Lamping. Lamping takes the crown for me. An overall more exciting sound, although the actual songwriting may be better on Fauna (only maybe though).
Gronlandic Edit is the best song on both albums, however.
I actually just intended to make the point that I thought the Fauna production was totally substandard compared to Lamping but I fell into the trap of obligatory picking a favourite :) My bad.
They're consecutive albums by the same bleedin' band.
am I aloud to keep reading DiS and Pitchfork now still?
I hadn't really heard Animal Collective until the other week either.
I wasn't feeling Strawberry Jam at all really, not in one go anyway I kinda liked the odd track every now and again, but the couple of other tracks I've heard from the new and old ones sound pretty nice.
I have heard that the Water Courses EP is pretty nice too I might get that.
Like Strawb Jam but less self-satisfied and annoying.
the annoying bit was what was putting me off them a little
I prefer feels to strawberry jam I think. Can't wait for the new one!
but thats not to take anything away from skeletal lamping which I think if hissing fauna didnt exist would be considered mind blowing. Hissing fauna came out of unique circumstances conducive to song writing and probably wont be repeated, I still prefer cherry peel and the gay parade though.
