Track - 'Waiting for the end of the world'...
Pressure point is also a good one.
There's a fairly decent 'hits' album somewhere. A good place to start, beware though, he's a bit prolific.
track - Pressue point
the hits package isn't a bad starting point for once. Beware though, he's a bit prolific.
My Aim is True. im not too keen though.
This Year's Model - lyrically brutal punk/new wave with BITE and some incredible bass-work.
Get Happy!! - 20 Motown-inspired songs, most of which are no longer than 3 minutes on the dot. Joint favourite with This Year's Model.
Songs (none of which are on the albums I mentioned): "What's So Funny 'Bout Peace, Love and Understanding", "Man Out of Time", "The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes", "Alison", "Big Tears"
This Year's Model is the first with the Attractions and clatters like a high speed train. Costello once said on that album the guitar is the sole rhythmic instrument, and he's right. Plus Pump It Up and (I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea, and Radio Radio on some versions. Then Armed Forces, which is really dark and creepy in places and has Oliver's Army and Accidents Will Happen. Imperial Bedroom is my favourite of his but I wouldn't recommend starting with it, as it's all these odd rococo orchestrations and grandiose putdowns co-produced by George Martin's right hand man Geoff Emerick.
This Year's Model
My Aim Is True
in no particular order, they are all wonderful albums.
Immense album. Oh the grin I had on my face when I stumbled on a vinyl copy for £4.
...all the way.
The next few albums are all great, especially This Year's Model. His solo stuff is real hit and miss.
There's a 2 disc best off colleciton which is pretty decent.
Was the track that got me into Mr Costello. There's a better live version floating around somewhere (Possibly on the Stif documentary). Album-wise though, you can't go wrong with This Years Model.
I'm listening to 'Almost Blue' right now...it's pretty good although prolly not the 1st one to get. All of the above are pretty much excellent. You can't go wrong with the first six or seven albums.
