Alter is a sublime album in my eyes. Pure genius....
It'll unsettle yo for years to come.
*shakes head wistfully*
Has to be listened to loud.. love the guitar sound on this album too.
are over rated.
Sunn don't make anything artistic that isn't done by Old Man Gloom a gazillion times better.
Boris are one of the most disappointing live bands I have seen to date and I have watched them 3 times for some reason.
There are far better bands of that elk out there.
Old Man Gloom
hell even trans am did better noise records.
that Altar is really crap! The only Sunn cd that i've kept is Black One. That's pretty great.
Sunn was never about being "artistic" It's about pushing the limits of Doom. They did the same with Teeth of Lions rule divine.
Sunn are a Doom band. I have been a fan since their first album 00 void! That is a doom album!
Sunn should not be put in the noise genre at all!
aren't alike at all. Odd.
maybe 'that elk' means they are in fact different
yknow, that one http://www.scsc.k12.ar.us/2001Outwest/PacificEcology/Projects/MosleyR/ElkInVelvet.jpg
Therein lies the problem
yields maximum results
It's one of the records I love owning on vinyl. Beautiful: coloured LPs, masses of artwork and notes and is almost as physically heavy as it is sonically heavy.
Why is rue_the_day not all over this thread?
I've had it on CD since release, but like you said, it's one of those albums I feel I need to own on vinyl, and the artwork just looks stunning. I'm moist in anticipation, especially for the bonus track.
I know you weren't asking me, but I think Feedbacker is their best record.
or maybe Pink.
I need more of their drone stuff though.
Their drone work is sublime.
it might be a Godspeed Y!BE moment all over again
sunn will have to do something mighty to beat altar.
but of course it isn't better than neurosis, but they stand alone.
have you heard Earth 2?
I prefer being lost in some bottomless sea of blissful noise. Or Ol' Dirty, whichever, y'know
apart from the opening track. that one is great. i hadn't listened to sunn0))) for a long time until last night when i fell alsleep listening to 'my wall' .... i dreamt that joseph fritzl used to play in goal for liverpool.
by Sunn0))) is amazing
one of my favourite records of 2008 by far
However Sunn o)))'s best album is either White 2, Live White or Black One and for BORIS is Pink and finally for boris it is Dronevil.
the mixture of sounds don't really come together very well, you lose the low end thrum of Sunn with all the trebly guitar and you lose the vigour of Boris with all the glacial doom stuff. And The Sinking Belle stinks the place up something proper
i'm all about Black One
I mean, I know what they're going for, but I just find it doesn't really come off. Am I delusional?
I'd rather listen to Earth 2 almost any day of the week.
But yeah, i think Sunn succeed in what they're trying to do. I'm only really accustomed to Black One, but it mixes this really heavy visceral sonic effect with a perfectly paced and formed flow - everything just comes along at exactly the right time, and when things reach their crescendo or tipping point then it all feels perfect, especially because you've been pummelled by the repetition for x amount of time beforehand. And it sounds dead evil as well
It's like pyschedelic drone. It's hard to explain, but it literally does feel you're having some sort of out of body experience if you listen to it loud enough.
i have ALWAYS loved you
I have every bs album already, I am trying to open my mind... :D
For said bands' individual works?
either smile(the one i started with, dont worry about the differing versions too much) or pink
for sunn O))),i only own black one,but it is brillant, get it
hope that helps, tho go for boris first
they make me feel like ive got sunny clouds around me and in me,whereas sunn is like floating through a rift in the earth of black rock and demonic sky
Thanks in advance if I fall in love with one of those records
I think it's great.
Taken on its own it's a beautiful song.
In the context of altar it acts as a sort of 'eye in the storm' - a period of calm amongst the doom clouds. Awesome stuff.
Genuine first listen to Sunn O))). I have been inspired by this thread. As I write: It Took The Night To Believe. Second spin in.
I honestly don't know what to think about this. Very odd but am intrigued. Where to go next?
If you are in a place where you are comfortable with yourself and have no major mental health issues then get Black One.
If you're not then I'd give it a miss.
Is a bit like doing hallucinogenic drugs then?
