announced tomorrow. what do you guess it will be? might be a prize for the winner :)
What do I win?
not a copy of the winning album.
I don't think i'd argue too much if it was
or yawnworthy as the NME's picks, and I own two of their top 10, both of which were nice but not on my own best of the year list.
I say M83's Saturdays = Youth. But I know I'm wrong (even though I'm right).
Will people actually risk growing up anytime soon and stop hurling the words 'indie' 'elitist' or 'snob' at anyone who dares wish for a slight diversion from the same rote picks at the same time of year? Where's Lambchop? Wheres Neon Neon? Where's... no, look, forget I said anything. Carry on.
so I rewrote it below. With extra exasperation!
Just to say anyway.
OK. carry on both of you!
Actually, to be fair, I'm pretty happy it made it that far up.
I wonder if there will ever come a time when someone doesn't get the words 'indie', 'elitist' or 'snob' hurled at them anytime they display a desire to not see the same rote, predictable picks turn up at the same time of year, or in fact ever offer an opinion that doesn't include the latest painfully 'scene' darlings or sub-eurotrash dance crossovers.
I was right! Is it a blue moon or something? Or have I just broken my head on my desk after reading a kissingingkansas post?
congratulations, you were the only who didn't hedge your bets and guest it correctly and super quickly. Send me a note with your address to claim your prize (the bulk of DiS records back catalogue and some random bits we have laying around the office like a Tenacious D dvd, a Cut Copy t-shirt and anything else I can fit in a big envelope!)
either bon iver or elbow
Please Desctibe Yourself by Dogs Die In Hot Cars? Aw why not?
The Mande Variations by Toumani Diabate? Oh what.
i love that album
If so, it's Cut Copy 'In Ghost Colours'
If not, it should be Of Montreal 'Skeletal Lamping'
what do i win?
TV on the Radio - Dear Science
that's The Walkmen. Or Elbow.
how good is that Walkmen album?
Altogether now (you and me anyway [pun intended]) EU-GEEEEEEENNNNNNNNNEEE!
Now Thats What I Call Shoe-Rave Vol.1
times new viking, flying lotus, fuck buttons, fleet foxes, tv on the radio, vampire weekend?
Deerhunter? Why?? Cut Copy? Wild Beasts?
Portishead me thinks
TV on the Radio please?
I think it'll be Bon Iver or Elbow though.
NO-ONE at all has seen it as a contender, even though it is really pretty good.
nevermind. I'm going to see if I've got the energy to rise to sean's Radiohead baiting.
No. I don't.
let's be Boris-buddies.
because KiK will leave now?
it should be anyway
because that is the best album of the year
but it is in mine
i think the pedant police would assassinate me if it was anywhere near such a list.
plus it's dull gash for were-never-hip accountants or somesuch rant...
Even lowly accountants need some love on occasion...
Mind you, only on occasion.
honestly one of the best albums I've ever heard.
would totally love the Rolling Stone album of the year list!
but realistically out of stuff I liked, only Fuck Buttons or Times New Viking will make the cut.
I've heard the Nadja one ploughs a similar vein, will be getting that after christmas.
It'll be Johnny Foreigner or something.
Late of the Pier
I would maybe have said London Zoo but the quietus already had that
your life is safe (am not a fan either)
very very very very expectable
The Magnetic Fields - Distortion but i'd like to see it get some recognition cos it's mint and seems to have been forgotton about cos it came out in January. That is all.
i was massively disappointed by this album and haven't spoken to anyone who likes it but now i've found someone (hello!)
and every list forget Johnny Foreigner? This makes me sad. I already knew that was my album of the year when the year had barely started.
Then big props for Would-Be-Goods' Eventyr, seeing how every other list has criminally ignored that too.
its not JF, I honestly thought DiS was gonna pluck for that... Toss up between Bon Iver, TOTR or Elbow - all awesome and worthy winners.
None of those can produce even a fraction of the excitement of Johnny Foreigner.
but as no one's said it yet and it's my fav:
'Microcastle/Weird Era Cont.' by Deerhunter.
Or 'ExitingARM' by Subtle.
Wait and see.....
I'm blaming the lack of Diver...
I have Sight.
but it should be! That album has just floored me totally -- lyrically, vocally, arrangement(ally?)/musically.
And such a massive spit in the eye to the aching, painful mediocrity of the vast, vast majority of British guitar/indie music that came out this year.
If I was in The Kooks, Razorlight, The Pigeon Detectives, The Kaiser Chiefs, The View, The Fratellis, Oasis or The Enemy, I would make sure this was on the turntable to maximise my embarrassment before someone kicked the chair away.
I loved The Walkmen album too.
TV On The Radio? I wish I could hear/see what everyone else seems to. All I can hear/see is Peter Gabriel being buggered to the strains of a hyper-fashionable indie sheen and the occasional Prince knock-off. (I really like Halfway Home though - needs to be turned up loud though)
and go with late of the pier
DiS' album of the year isn't....Iglu and Hartly.
1. Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours
2. m83 - Saturdays = Youth
3. Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing
4. Deerhunter - Microcastle
5= Frightened Rabbit - The Midnight Organ Fight
5= Of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping
7 Crystal Castles s/t
8 Foals - Antidotes

and added up their scores! However, I forgot to include David_R and I had not realised that you might take into account our own votes.
but i didn't do it using democracy, it was like college votes, i took into account writers, previous staff editorial team (i.e. Alex, Mike, Kev, Gareth and Sam who ran the site for the bulk of this year before sadly being made redundant) and then tried to make something agreeable and exciting. You'll see it soon enough... more writing to do now, bye!
I'm gonna go ahead and say, 'no'.
Cut Copy is a strong contender.
it's 2 am and i'm likely to be up for a while with this bastard essay, it would be awesome if at 3am i could find out.
christ i really am trying SO HARD to avoid doing this essay.
And I claim my five pounds.
even though that was 2007, shit I love scouting for girls?!
when is this announced?
