One hit wonder singles from around 1995 to 2001 (Sadpunk to the thread please)
Morning,
For my friends birthday party this saturday, we were looking at having as many one hit wonder singles from around 1995 to 2001 as possible.
Examples:
'Stay' (I missed you) by Lisa Loebe
'Inside' by Stiltskin
'Glorious' by Andreas Johnson
'Kiss Me' by Sixpence none the Richer.
Please help.
stiltskin were the first band i ever saw live
virgin megastore in Reading, March 1995
OMC - How Bizarre
Great shout
biggest selling single ever in New Zealand
Is this true?!
If so, that's one of my favourite facts of all time.
apparently
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OMC_(band)
"Signed to Simon Grigg's huh! label, OMC released the single "How Bizarre" in New Zealand in 1995. It was an immediate smash hit even without a video, reaching number one late that year and staying there for six weeks. It sold over 35,000 copies (3½ times platinum), a figure not exceeded in New Zealand as of 2005."
Heaven is a Halfpipe
Nice one
Oh OPM.
still going, don'tcha know
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_State_Of_Mind_(album)
I remember the single
they released after heaven is a half pipe. It was called el capitan I believe. A true abomination.
Wheatus>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>OPM
rednex
cotten eyed joe
yes!
and
chumbawumba and new radicals
I have 'Get what you give' on single
the b-side is amazing
rednex had 2 hits
thanks.
the second one was the first one backwards tho
great band.
check this shout out
EVERY now compilation has a page on wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Now_That%27s_What_I_Call_Music!_32_(UK_series)
I brought Now 34
TOTP 96 and 'Huge Hits' 97 to ATP pitchfork. That was a LONG drive home for Ana. Especially when we listened to 'Knocking on Heavens Door' by Dunblane on repeat.
:D
Everyones free to wear Sunscreen by Baz Luhrmann
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=sTJ7AzBIJoI
Remember singing Glorious down Cally Road last Saturday? I love that song...
ha ha ha
I remember now. Glorious is a wonderful song, and the soundtrack to many England sporting failures.
i saw Andreas Johnson at Wembley Stadium
he didn't even play Glorious last, it confused everyone.
????
How does that work?! I didn't even know he had other songs. I assumed a set list would be him singing a 45 minute of 'Glorious', whilst various footballers are shown missing penalties on a huge screen behind him.
:D
exactly.
he was opening for Bon Jovi. Toploader also played. not the best day ever...
!!!
Andreas Jonson, Toploader and Bon Jovi?! Was this a bargaining plea to get out of being grounded?
my friend had a spare ticket
i thought i'd help him out and buy it. "how bad could it be?", i thought.
bon jovi played for THREE HOURS.
3 hours?
that sounds amazing.
Just one grenade
Spaceman
but I forget the name of the band but the lead singer was called Jazzman or something reedicolus.
Also, White Town - Your Woman. Amazing song.
Spaceman was by Babylon Zoo
Yes it was!
Wildchild - Renegade Master
but it might have to be the Norman Cook remix which I think was released 97/98. Off the top off my head I can't remember when the original single was out.
Also, that Jungle Brothers song of the Fatboy Slim mix album, which goes: "Dancing on the dance floor, girl it's you that I adore" (but speeded-up and not at rap speed).
Also, Wisguys, Ooh la la (though the Wiseguys first album is amazing and so much better than the second from which this song is from).
white town was going to get my vote
one of my favourite songs EVER
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Blueboy - Remember Me
Zombie Nation - Kernkraft 400
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=z5LW07FTJbI
Amazing stuff
That is going to be in my head ALL day
Zombie Nation - Forza
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=T8ZydY0rgV8
Released the other week :D
Great stuff.
All the above, plus:
I am, I feel - Alisha's Attic
One Of Us - Joan Osbourne
Groove Is In The Heart - Deee-lite
A Girl like You - Edwin Collins
Breakfast at Tiffany's - Deep Blue Something
I Got Five On It - Luniz
I Love You Always Forever - Donna Lewis
In The Meantime - Spacehog
Bitch - Meredith Brooks
Some of those pre-date 1995
soz!
Why don't you have a club night?
If you do, can I come and guest DJ please?
If I do
The resident DJs will be me, you and Olegrich! :)
Hurrah!
it'd be ace as a one off
but not something you could sustain interest in.
Also, it would be like Flares with the seventies or Reflex with the eighties. What would you call a 90s themed bar? Combats? Spiceworld?
Alisha's Attic? Spliffys?
Also yes, you couldn't make a night of it. Maybe having it as a one-off would reiterate the point!
Combats would be a great name
I want a 90's power hour at my birthday gig/party
Reckon you could do a 60 minute 90s megamix
in the style of jive bunny?
COME ON EVERYBODY
EVERYBODY
EVERYBODY
C-C-C C'MON EVERYBODY
You say, I only hear what I want to...
Yes, that works.
Alisha's Attic
were not one hit wonders.
and throw in
Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal too!
Darude - Sandstorm
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZXPP7qMSz4
When was that released?
I was thinking it was late 2001/early 2002 so didn't suggest it.
I thought it was like 2000/2001
so just fits the criteria
According to wiki
released in late 1999 and early 2000.
I'll take it
That was a TUNE
Trouble by Shampoo
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=QL15Ya5fsgo
they had 4 hits
5 if you count the re-issue of 'trouble'.
thanx
mark morrison - return of the mack
Mr Oizo - Flat Beat!
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=I7Gx7wKwqWQ
Get out
Mr Oizo is still very much active, and still churning out some pretty decent stuff. He's one of the 'main players' on the French club scene, and well respected
The new Mr Oizo album is pure brilliance
White Town
"Your Woman"
Mark Owen
Clementine (eieieieieiei)
^ wasn't Child a bigger hit?
No
Not in my eyes.
Nightcrawlers - Push the feeling on
Outhere Brothers - Boom Boom Boom (although "Dont Stop Wiggle Wiggle" was number 1 too so er, maybe not a 1 hit wonder)
Boom Boom Boom!
Dirty version or clean version?
"Put your pussy on my face"
Dirty, of course!
Ho, no, check out below
Here comes the brother with the (something) flow
obviously, this:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MwtTOxouD5Q
also, Closing Time
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=KdmLmIArqWM
which sounds more like Feeder than I remember it doing.
Was Len even a "hit"?
That is the worst video of all time, thanks for reminding me.
Plus
Semisonic had "Secret Smile" which was massive
They also had Closing Time
which discounts them as one hit wonders. That is also one of the best drinking songs EVER!
Steal my sunshine was INREDIBLE
The drummer from Len wore an arsenal away shirt on TOTP I recall.
also
Brendan Canning from Broken Social Scene played keyboards on it.
You are full of brilliant facts today
If this is true
it's the best fact of all time
Macy Gray - I Tray
I WEAR GOGGLES WHEN YOU ARE NOT THERE
i wear womble suits when you are not there *
:D
I'll be there for you - Rembrandts
I know they've down plenty of other stuff but I suppose Brim full of Asha by Cornershop could well be counted as a one hit wonder.
Get My Sharona in there as well even if it doesn't meet the 1995-2001 criteria. Or even better get that busker to the party!
Get him to play 'Your Song'?
MY SHARONA!
KAVANA
Bran Van 3000 - Drinking In LA
Gin Blossoms - Hey Jealousy
Defs on Bran Van 3000
That is SUCH a good tune!
Haha
I remember a girl put their album on at a party but only played that track repeatedly..
heck yeah!
It really is
CHOOOOOON
Feeling kinda groovy, working on a movie (YEAH RIGHT)
i hate that song
I found my Drinking In LA
CD single the other week, a gem!
but we did nothing
absolutely nothing that day
Kavana!
Amazing! The fella's USP was that he used to be Take That's tea-boy!
I just Wanna Fly
By Jimmy Ray I think.
Also, Achey Brakey Heart by Billy 'Miley's Dad' Ray Cyrus.
Didn't Jimmy Ray
have a single called "Are you Jimmy Ray?"
They did!
They may not be the same band I'm thinking off.
I'll consult the internet and get back to you.
Sugar Ray
Was who I meant.
God that song.
That song is just fucking awful beyond belief.
[Lots of other stuff in this thread though = AMAZING]
I have the cd single of Are You Jimmy Ray somewhere.
It has about 6 different remixes on it.
Edwyn Collins
Girl Like You squeezes into 1995.
Now not a one hit wonder in my eyes but for the general public probably.
Also, Gigalo Ants, Where I Find My Heaven
Catch - Bingo
OH.MY.GOD
sitting down here!
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=I7Q8md5rdQ4
Definitely less good than I remember it being.
*vomits*
aww lena marlin!
Didn't you have her album?
Goldbug - Whole Lotta Love
Yes, a cover of the Led Zepplin number. It has not aged well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrcbHQXwlk4
1 min in
I just remembered....
THE DUM DUMS!!
Livin Joy - Dreamer
this is the best song posted in this thread so far:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1MibKBAnjhU
I thought this was sung by a man for, like, ages.
Good shout!
I just listened to that all the way trough
it's still ace!
bf
No fronts! No tricks! No soapbox politics!
No guns! Just blunts! We kick this just for fun!
They released that song about 5 times
A true one hit flogging!
ha ha ha
Dog eat Dog!
MYEEEYA HEE MYEEEYA HO MYEEEYA DI MYEEEYA DOOODEE!!!
Lou Bega - Mambo No. 5.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Vaw-9WElAjc
Two good 'uns:
Lit - My Own Worst enemy
N-Trance - Set you Free (LOVE IT)
Olive - You're Not Alone
Angelic - It's my Turn
Okay that's 4.
I just can't think of anything more "indie"
:(
Who did
"Jew you really like it?
Is it is it wicked?"
and when?
Hmmm
DJ Luck and MC Neat!
Around 2000 I think
Big big world - Amelia anyone?
yes please!
when i was in china last month
someone sang that in karaoke, and it was still godawful. It's actually the wettest song ever written.
wooooww
Im actually writing some of these down to download when i get in, i forgot how good some of these were. you guys win.
and connells 74-75
WORST SONG EVER
WHAT?!
It's an incredible song.
It's dire
Yeah I hate that song
So depressing
3rd single i ever bought
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=H25lz7gchaw
Afroman - Because I Got High
Baha Men - Who Let The Dogs Out?
Joan Osbourne
Some song with heavy religious overtones - name escapes me...
WHAT IF GOD WAS ONE OF US
JUST A SLOB LIKE ONE OF US
JUST A STRANGER ON THE BUS
TRYING TO MAKE HIS WAY HOOOOOOOOOME
I prefer
Dr Evils version of that Joan Osbourne song.
but what if he was?
WHAT THEN? I don't think she thought that song through. Still, worth it for that "phone/Rome" rhyme.
They did a few other things but nothing ever smashed the charts like this!
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ-27rdwJPs
Smashmouth - Walking On The Sun
Opus III - It's A Fine Day
Opus iii was 1992 surely? (It's on my Rave Hits 92 album).
If we're allowing early 90s then i'm chucking Let Loose into the mix.
Let Loose!!!!
...
A girl from my primamry claimed to be the drummer from Let Loose's neice. I called her a liar, so she got me a signed picture! I wish I still had it now.
smash mouth also had All Star though
which was in Shrek or something so was absolutely massive.
You're right
Walking on the Sun
god I remember loving that song, until I went on a family holiday driving around florida, and it was being continuously played. Like, literally every half hour.
Independent Love Song - Scarlett
OF COURSE
I remember Melody Maker's review of that single
"You may think this is another boring love song" - OK love, we'll go with that.
I absolutely adore that song
and used to love bellowing along to it tunelessly as a teenager
HOW COULD I FORGET!
This is an INCREDIBLE song
Listening to it now
Want to bellow so much it hurts
Babybird - You're gourgeous
All seeing I - Beat goes On (although they did do Walk like a panther which is a bit of a cult hit)
Eye monster - daydream in blue
3T - Anything
Which was on Top Of The Pops every week for about 3908548304 weeks
Good examples
No way sis - I'd Like To Teach the World To Sing
Andy Cole - Outstanding
Although calling these hits may be stretching things a bit. Here's another, which was pretty big:
The grid - swamp thing
Mike Flowers Pops - Wonderwall
Bloodhound Gang - The Bad Touch
wasnt do you really like it
by dj pied piper
get crazy town on there
hot action cop
Here comes the hotstepper
Ini Kamoze
Although this might be pre '95. See also: Snow - Informer
Technohead - I Wanna Be A Hippy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_3gaiifiv8
Notice how TOTP bleep out "stoned", "high" and "marijuana" - making the song pretty pointless.
Does this count?
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=pFcxe_DSyjs
Jason Nevins hasn't done anything else of note but obviously Run DMC have.
Me Me Me - Hanging Around
Belting shout
I was reading about that song on the train not 45 minutes ago
Weird
Barenaked Ladies
One Week.
some big beat for ya
Hazel - Loop da Loop
Badder Badder Schwing - Freddie Fresh
Because of You - Scanty Sandwich
Andrew WK - Party Hard
My Life Story - Strumpet
Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=0dBu5X3TvNw
Eiffel 65 - Blue
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=H25lz7gchaw
i remember these 2 songs being on repeat on a school trip when they came out
that Blue video is absolutely ridiculous
i can remember thinking it was amazing at the time too.
tune
Haha!
I had a promo VHS of that
WHY
'Stay Another Day' by Jon Secada
^ get out
shut up
it's INCREDIBLE
That song is fantastic
eagle eye cherry!
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=s00Kgm-Kjic
The Original - I Luv U Baby
You've all missed out "Steal My Sunshine" by Len, released 1999. Tune. Seriously.
That was mentioned way up there ^
Also, "King of my Castle" by Wamdue Project.
Bucketheads - The bomb (these sounds fall into my mind)
Cornershop - Brimful of Asha
Junior Senior - Move your feet
Drugstore - El Presidente
great b-side too
Pete Heller — Big Love
LOVED that tune.
The Tamperer ft. Maya — Feel It
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=W6-ILQXEMVA
HATED that tune.
I Quit - Hepburn
the guitarist was on a buzzcocks line up a while back and was just as hot as I remember... swoon...
Do these count?
All American Rejects - Swing Swing
that band that did Punk Rock Princess
White Town - Your Woman
Been mentioned alot, another track that gos down well when djing!Anyone heard his albums? The guy's an absolute genius.
Good God
I love that song and still play it to death.
I love this song
Sugar Ray - Every Morning
Most of these have done something under another name etc
Stardust "Music Sounds Better With You"
The Cuban Boys "Cognoscenti Vs Intelligentsia"
Monaco "What Do You Want From Me"
Bentley Rhythm Ace "Bentley's Gonna Sort You Out"
The Folk Implosion - "Natural One"
Sneaker Pimps - "Six Underground"
Skee-Lo - "I Wish"
McAltmont/Butler - "Yes"
my dad has a sixpence none the richer album
CLEARLY NOT A ONE HIT WONDER.
ctrl+f "collapsed lung"
no 'eat my goal'? scandalous.
none of those are one hit wonders though.
Also, it's 'The Impression That I Get' by the Bosstones and they released loads of singles, granted none were as massive as the aforementioned track, but they were hardly one song then gone. Same goes for Therapy?
I'm not sure that was the wildhearts biggest single either...
rocket from the crypt - on a rope
There is no way Rocket From the Crypt
where one hit wonders. Though that is a great song.
they are in this context
they only had one top 40 hit. whereas therapy? and the wildhearts (above) had 12 and 13... of course rftc were much more than that single, but y'know.
^this
RFTC released over 10 albums and many, many singles ('Born in '69', 'Break It Up', 'Lipstick', 'Young Livers', Sturdy Wrist, 'Ditchdigger', etc.
i know, i'm a huge fan
but see above, they are a one hit wonder. it's not up for discussion!
Warm Jets - Hurricane
I also believe the lead singer went out with Zoe Ball for a while.
^ true then she left him for Norman Cook
tru fax
Then she left him for some low rent DJ
but then went back. I don't know why I know so much about Zoe Ball.
Montell Jordan - This Is How We Do It
also MN8 - I've Got A Little Something For You
fucking hell
this is a goldmine of nostalgia.
hobo humpin slobo wotsit
by whale...
pre dates 95
but i feel Young at Heart by the Bluebells deserves a mention
