were really fucking awesome. That is all.
until they got to shine a light about a third of the way through at which point I thought 'they have played all the songs I want to hear what are the chances they might play the ep versions of those songs? not high hmm my feet hurt I wish I was at home' and they entered a lull, for the rest of the set I became more preoccupied with the chump in front of me who kept moshing which involved repeatedly jumping on my feet and spilling other peoples drinks on me completely obliviously, so I spent the rest of the set trying to angle my foot in a way that would inflict pain but sadly to no avail, then the set finished they came back played an amazing encore surprising me to find out they did have more songs I wanted to hear. 6.7/10
1) Spencer Krug and Dan Boeckner's songwriting.
2) Their old and their new stuff.
I think I was standing next to some of you, right near the front. I heard somebody say "I'm just trying to work out who you are off the internet" and I died a little inside.
I really like his songs on their first album but live his vocals were too 'rock' his hair was doing silly things as well. Krug looked so different to how I expected him to look, even though ive seen pictures they never leave an impression. It was very noticiable that all of their new songs are unnecessarily long, they rushed through dear sons and daughters of hungry ghosts which was annoying
he seemed alright, more into it than krug
They were great.
their keyboard player with them? he was not with them two weeks ago in Helsinki, and some of the songs sounded excellent, primal and raw without the tinklings watering them down. Some songs really needed the missing stuff though. Excellent show though, that one.
but even though i really like mt zoomer it did drag a little towards the end. they seemed to stretch the longer new songs out a bit too much. good ending though.
And the last few songs were brilliant but there was a lull of about 30 minutes where I was pretty bored. Nevermind. I wasn't really in the mood anyway to be honest.
There wasn’t any unpredictability, but every song sounded so good. Also, I was really impressed by the sound – it sounds geeky, but it was crisp where I wanted it to be and sludgy where it should’ve been. It’s been a very long time since I was last at the Ballroom (Avalanches and Erol Alkan in 2001, fact fans), and it felt strange wandering back in there.
I didn’t catch the support acts at all (this was my fault, I turned up to a deserted ULU and then realised my mistake) – were they much cop?
Thanks to Rich for the ticket – sorry I couldn’t chat much, but I didn’t really want to keep you both standing out in the cold.
(You're right about the sound though)
Supports weren't particulary spectacular anyway if it helps!
Glad you had a good time! You did us a favour taking it. Slow club were SO good.
but we took a tactical decision and decided that Wolf Parade would be a better show to flyer afterwards. Glad we did now – I’d never seen them before and I get the impression that they might not make an appearance as a group on these shores again.
Gig I thought although sometimes bit too epic for my tastes! But still more than a few fantastic songs on there.
not sure what more I could have asked for but I still felt a bit disappointed. Definite periods of boredom. I think it was because I've waited to see them for about 3 years (missed them first time round) and they were never going to live up to my expectations.
this is correct.
and I was really blown away. Brilliant set, every song sounded like a classic, and the 2nd album really came to life. Kissing the Beehive was just stunning.
But I was also standing near those people who were going "oohh, I'm trying to work out who you were off the internet" and they were the most annoying cunts I've ever met at a gig, ever. There was this guy who looked like a computer technician with a stupid goatee standing next to this woman who looked like a smack head, he moved out of the crowd so I moved forward, not knowing they were at the gig together. She gave me a look and shouted at me "stop taking up peoples spaces!" and I apologised and moved back. But then she must have told the guy, so every time one of their pathetic bottomfeeder group left the crowd (each time bringing a new group member, pushing right in front of me) they all took a step backwards and put their elbows and arms literally in my face so I couldn't move into "their spaces".
They all talked like the sort of kids you would have literally shat on at school, and shouted things like "SPENCER I'M PREGNANT LULZ 4 THA WIN!!!!!!!!!" etc etc. The lowest of the low, it boiled my blood that such people are actually allowed out of dungeons and dragons club of an evening. But I'm smug in the knowledge that they are all ugly and utterly repulsive, and most probably absolutely talentless, although I'm sure they could reboot my hard drive while I smash their fucking faces in.
made my day. fucking hilarious.
They sound like fuckwits of the highest order. Bad luck.
I thought the majority of the crowd were fine, you could tell a lot of people had been waiting to see them for 3 years. Including Lily Cole, who was incidently at the Sunset Rubdown show we put on at the luminaire earlier in the year. Maybe she has a thing for spence.
As for Wolf Parade , i thought they were awesome too. Any band that starts with 'Fathers Son' is always gonna be wicked.
Fathers Son and was hoping to hear it and then it was first up!
it did drag a bit though, to be honest. I don't find the new album anywhere near as catchy, so I was getting a bit impatient through some of those ones. That one about radio waves were like snow is brilliant though. And Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts is one of the best songs ever ever, speeded up live it was amazing.
It was a great view from the balcony, I may do that again!
am I right in thinking that they never, ever play 'Grounds for Divorce'?
Here's a half-a-plate that kinda proves it: http://flickr.com/photos/crazybobbles/3076310414/
Which is why I asked. Obviously by "never, ever" I mean excluding last night.
My brother went to their gig in Berlin last week and he says they played it there as well. Great song, either way. I'm still getting over how great that gig was, to be honest; terrible news that they're not touring next year :(
