best studio album?
is the retrospective compilation cd worth getting too?
simply not true. gentlemen or congregation. both amazing
the Uptown Avondale EP is well worth tracking down too
haven't heard the compilation - look ok but loses points for not including Miles Iz Ded
...but 'Gentlemen' is generally accepted as being their strongest album.
And Saturnalia by Gutter Twins
they're both fantastic, but I'd say Gentlemen is marginally the better album.
is farking amazing
Gentlemen and Black Love are mostly neck and neck.
Fuck it then - Congregation :-)
Not sure I'd be arsed with a best of
they're both brilliant, get them both! Then get 1965 and Congregation.
bit cringworthy in parts..but once you get past the ott style it contained some progress into R&B proper
Twilight Singers "Powder Burns" a listen. Black Love before Gentleman
The really early stuff isn't much cop, but you'll want all four of these albums.
Also, see if you can get hold of the bootleg of their Berlin show from 1995, it's all over the net.
Gentlemen is astounding. But Black Love really is just that little bit more astounding. Soulcore at its absolute zenith. Snarling angry, looking for something to fight and fuck, funkier than any band from Cincinnatti has any right to be, downright dangerous and yet heaped with epiphanies of the soul.
To be honest, you can't really go wrong with the Whigs. Nor can you go wrong with Dulli's other project, The Twilight Singers, or in fact his work with Mark Lanegan as Gutter Twins. Go get.
I agree about Gentlemen and Black Love, but I really like 1965 too. It's shiny and great.
Watch out for that last Gutter Twins EP - fairly poor. DREADFUL cover of Scott Walker. Stick to the album.
As for Twilight Singers; start with Blackberry Belle, then Powder Burns. Their first album is a bit different as he had a second singer in the band and there are a lot more electronic moments (this is 'cause he was still in the Whigs and didn't want Twilight Singers to sound like them). Still worth getting though.
My teenage sleaze album.
