am i the only person who finds this shit unlistenable?
but they are awesome.
After reading/hearing nothing but praise for them I invested in their LP and couldn't see what the fuss was about.
Watched them at Summer Sundae with the thought of, "Maybe if I see them live it'll all make sense."
I'm still not having it.
in a few years time we'll be proven right
would you not feel embarrassed if a girl, or anyone for that matter who didn't have an extensive knowledge of music, heard you listening to them? not that that's my sole reason for disliking them
...but they'd most probably say, what the fuck is THIS SHIT?!
'wow, you're listening to a 40-minute noise-freak-out' kind of way, but in a 'wow, you're listening to some fucking camp, posh opera parody, are you actually ok in the head' kind of way
I can see why you'd think they're very shit, but the same goes for a lot of bands, and indeed genres. I personally cannot stand Erol Alkan style electro-dirge remixes, but many people seem to love it.
though erol doesn't really do much i could class as an electro dirge
BUT WAT IF A GURL HERD U LISTNIN TO THEM MAN!? A FUCKIN REAL LIFE GIRL, SHE'D TINK U WER FUCKIN NUTZ DEN YOU PROBZ WOULND GET TUGS OFF HER
literally the worst reasoning for disliking a band I've ever heard
''a girl, or anyone for that matter who didn't have an extensive knowledge of music'' and ''not that that's my sole reason for disliking them''.
if something's embarrassing to listen to it's a bad sign. it's a perfectly good reason for disliking something
what do you listen to bands for? your own enjoyment or for the sake of your appearance to others? any other reason for disliking them you've named is fair enough - its pure subjectivity - but its a pretty lame attitude to music if you listen to things on the basis of how people might perceive you for it; kind of shows an unease about oneself if they need to be affirmed by other people's opinions on things they do.
besides, pomposity and falsetto are hardly that foreign concepts are they? look at queen's success; would people really be that shocked?
is pretty weird
if you're self-conscious about listening to something, it means that sub-consciously you know it's awful. maybe it is terrible reasoning, i don't care, it makes sense to me..
and once more i emphasise it's not my only reason: even without the vocals, the music doesn't do that much for me
most of the time so i'm not looking to be cool by what i listen to, no-one can hear it: it was just a hypothetical point
you're just projecting your own opinions when you imagine others people's perceptions of what you're listening to, its a moot point completely. its possible to be self conscious and listen to something you love. i'd be self conscious if i was listening to wu tang clan next to some 70 year old, middle class, far right casual racists for example. doesn't mean i know its shit in my heart of hearts
and one that's obscured the main point: i just don't think they're very good. it does seem like i'm in the minority though
i can definitely see why people might dislike them. the vocals are pretty overbearing, and the instrumentation's pretty standard. i think melodically they're fairly excellent though and lyrically they're amazing. like they're singing about modern england, but its some bizarro oscar wilde england. its nice to have some english bands with that level of lyricism
watching them at Greenman this year I said to the mrs 'This band are going to be huge' and it may just take the support of pitchfork for that to happen. If i'm wrong, they will still be a legendary band that people love or hate. I think they are alright, haha.
are more often than not the best bands. it shows a band that are pushing boundaries in their genre, so some people will be too timid to actually like it cos it doesn't fall in line with their aesthetic of pop. obviously, there are exceptions, but Wild Beasts definitely do something that few other band do
and thought it was one of teh worst things i'd ever listened tom particularly the main singers falsetto-followed-by-growl thing, wtf was that?!
absolutely fucking awful.
and i'v seen does it offend you, yeah?
I really don't understand the hype surrounding them, the lead singer has one of the most annoying voices i'v ever heard/ the whole things sounded really contrived
and of course it's a contrived sound; he had to work really hard to get that sound that he'd planned. What's wrong with that? I think it shows hard work and real effort which I'm a fan of.
when the closest equivelant i can think of is Mika then something is wrong.
And to the above poster, i mean contrived as in forced rather than planned. It seemed like they'd seized onto a gimmick (Operatic fallseto combined with 'quirky' lyrics) and were clinging on for dear life
you've got no decent points of reference
Considering i like most of the bands on your last.fm i'm not sure what that says about you...
i don't mean "you like shitty bands", just that having a falsetto doesn't mean you sound like mika; its a poor comparison. the voice is pretty marmite-y i guess, but he's got a great voice in a technical sense, and the lyrics are genuinely fantastic and evocative without seeming forced. its amazing to hear a band with lyrics that invoke so much (for lack of a better word) englishness without being some laddish ode to fingering a girl behind a kebab van
The songs are very strong melodically. Some people are going to be too self conscious to get over the vocals and the dramaticism. But underneath are Tunes Of Steel.
They have some great tunes - Devil's Crayon is a stone cold classic and when you boil it down, it is ridiculously simple - they can make wine out of water.
They're very different but I like that about them. Time will tell if its contrived btu I don't believe it is.
the songs might be brilliant I have no idea, I can't get over the vocals and the bland indie in the background. I gave the album some goes and I just had to get rid of it, they hurt my mind. I have no problem with strange vocals at all but these ones just arn't good, to my ears.
Personally i love Wild Beasts but i just have to clear up a few points:
Firstly, hayden's voice is always going to be a love it or hate it thing, but comparing him to Mika is completely ludicrous!
Perhaps Kate Bush is a better reference point when you think of it?
His voice IS technically magnificent, whether you like it or not. Thats not a point of view, it is a fact.
Secondly, for gods sake, if you think the music is 'bland indie' i really cannot believe you've even given them the time of day. If it was haydens voice over something like 'The Kooks' or 'Razorlight' then i could understand, but Wild Beasts certainly do not make 'bland indie music'
My opinion on this argument is that the people who compare them to the likes of Mika have listened to maybe 10 seconds of a track and made up thier minds immediately. I must confess, i did just that with Wild Beasts about a year ago, thought fuck that guys voice is horrible...but i realised i hadn't really given them a chance. That second chance could have gone either way obviously! I could have come out of it still hating them, but turns out it's probably my top album of 2008.
So Marmite indeed, but i happen to love marmite! :)
I might make some toast.
Mika's voice is technicaly very good as well, I did compare the two on my very first listen I must admit. I was realing in shock from the horrible tones coming into my ears. Now I would say he sounds more like Antonie and the johnsons or maybe even a bit of high pitch morrisy and Ruffus Wainwright, I like most of those singers this guy just hurts my brian.
I still styand by it being a bit generic , jingly jangle bland indie along the same line as bland indie people as Elbow and a million other indie bands.
Fair play if you don't like WB or Elbow though. I'd rather hear reference points like Antony And The Johnsons than bloody Mika though!
My fucking sister heard Kaiser Chirfs for the first time (she lives in the USA and doesn't listen to the radio a lot) and said, "i like them, they remind me of The Jam!" WTF??????????
yeah it's not really my thing, I tryed gettin into it but it just made me get annoyed I just had to stop tryin unfortunatly.
I love marmite and wild beasts, especially together
I personally consider them an outstandingly good band, and a great live band.
I have seen them live three times - at Monto Water Rats, at Green Man and at the Manchester Discover show a month ago. I have just bought a ticket to see them again on their next tour - also at Manchester's The Deaf Institute.
I personally thought that their performance at Green Man was quite amazing, made all the more so by the dramatic lighting. They get better each time I see them.
and they were great
