most enjoyable =
chris corsano
alex neilsen
greg saunier
gene hoglan
dave lombardo
Enlighten me Jamie
apart from Chris Corsano, who I assume is part of Corsano/Flowers duo , I don't know who these people are...
alex neilsen
has worked with current 93, bonnie prince billy and lots of others. young, british and amazing.
greg is in deerhoof, and he's fucking amazing.
gene hoglan is in strapping young lad, has played with death, dark angel, testament
lombardo = SLAYER!!! and fantomas
cheers
i thought lombardo sounded familiar.
.
neilsen, corsano and saunier..they are 3 beautiful drummers right there
The
TV On The Radio drummer is seriously underrated, and also Thomas Pridgen (Mars Volta) http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6Y0aOYXEfl4
erm, here they are
I'm not going to do guitarists/bassists/pianists/piccolo players. It's all about vocals and drums for me;
1) John Stanier (Battles)
2) David Narcizo (Throwing Muses)
3) Pete DeFrietas (Echo & the Bunnymen)
4) Bloke from The Secret Machines
5) Bloke who played drums on the last Caribou tour
Getting desperate at the end? Not really- they were amazing when I saw them, I just don't know what their names are. I even spoke to the drummer of The Secret Machines after the gig (at the Jug of Ale in Brum) and told him how ace he was. I don't do that kind of thing. Anyone ever see John Bonham or Keith Moon?
...bloke from Secret Machines = Josh Garza
Utterly amazing drummer.
-
Jason Finn - The Presidents of the USA
Brendan Canty - Fugazi
Jimmy Chamberlin - Smashing Pumpkins
There, have three.
I saw Chamberlain
He was good, but the band sucked so hard that it just wasn't enjoyable.
SP may...
....be a little shite live now, but Chamberlain is pretty friggin good to watch when he drums. Massive big long complex drum solos and he A. Never seems to even break into a sweat and B. His upper body doesn't seem to move. Didn't he train as a jazz musician or something?
yeah, he mentions it on viewphoria
he's the best rock drummer alive today i reckons...
tom_from_sparks:
"Brendan Canty looks like he could be a little mentally retarded."
Tom's just jealous of Canty's massive bell.
That's my most inappropriate outburst of laughter all day
alright
Chris Corsano - With Mick Flower, as well as helping out Comets on Fire. Literally amazing.
Joey Castillo - Queens of the Stone Age. Muscular, innit.
John Stanier - Battles. Sweaty bastard.
Thomas Pridgen - The Mars Volta. Basically the best thing about their rather so/so show last year.
Todd Trainer - Shellac
If we're talking sheer enjoyment, the guy from Monotonix, and the Pissed Jeans guy.
I'm also seeing Zach Hill and Dale Crover next month. Shiiiit.
Alex Neilsen
Chris Corsano
Charles Hayward
Kevin Shea
Kid millions
KID MILLIONS!!
I forgot him on my list. He's better than Trainer.
I really wanna see Dave Lombardo do his thang.
how the fuck did i forget kid millions!
Who?
The guy from Oneida
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Bv_uV7BDoHQ&feature=related
this is worth it for the close up of the old dude at 6:30
and the song, of course.
That video is fucking ace
Oneida were awesome at ATP, my jaw kept dropping as they went on, sheets of Easter was unbelievably good.
They're mesmerising live.
Absolutely hypnotic, and most of it is due to him.
.
kevin shea! stunning

Chris Pennie / Brann Dailor >>>>>>>>>>>>>
anyone else.
Mike Bordin from Faith No More
and the geezer who used to play drums for Type O Negative then moved to Life of Agony.
Both technically excellent but I love the way Mike Bordin used to smash the shit out of his kit with real power and still maintain time.
Yeah also agree with Joey Castillo from QOTSA.
Oh and Jimmy Chamberlaine from Pumpkins. Love his sound both liv and on record.
Agreed with Chris Pennie, he's amazing
Anyone else think Dave Grohl is good too? I love his drumming style. Prefer it to Castillo's for Queens of the Stone Age.
Also Converge's drummer, and the dude from Interpol, who's name escapes me right now.
Joey Waronker is a good drummer too, very good at adapting to whatever band he plays with. Plus he did some drumming on XO, so he rules.
Mastodon drummer, is that Brann Dailor?
bands w/ awesome drummers

Fyfe Ewing FTW!!!
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Xn9M9f7XysI
yes yes yes
Fyfe x5
the drummer in my band!
seriously, i'm not just saying this. He's quite old now but he's toured with Billy Idol back when he was mega famous in the 80s, he auditioned for AC/DC and was in the band until they realized he was from New York (they wanted someone from Australia or the UK) and was going to play in Gang of Four in the 80s but they got someone in who was their drum tech after the original drummer left. You'd think he'd kind of be stuck in his ways being a fair bit older but not at all, he's still pushing himself and is really inventive with his playing.
I've seen videos of his band he played in New York back in the early 80s. They were brilliant, a 3 piece like Talking Heads, if anything more angular and odd. Just as they signed a record deal the singer/guitarist went insane and moved to California. He teaches music conduction at the big university there now.
Other than that the HEALTH drummer is great
Battles drummer is great
These New Puritans drummer should get more love too, fantastic drummer.
and though i haven't seen him play live, i've seen lots of videos of the drummer from the french band Magma. Perhaps the best drummer ever.
My posts go on a bit don't they?
I 2nd that These New Puritans mention
I dont tend to notice technical ability as a non-musician but even I noted how good he was.
Ash from charlottefield.
Nothing else stands up to him really.
^Pretty much this.
Is he doing anything post-charlottefield?
yes.
I'll dig out the myspacesss
er.
Well this isn't new...
http://www.myspace.com/jurassicboredom

Bloc Party man is very, very average
indeed.
Good man to back me up
He was good first album, now he's shite.
couldn't pick five,
but one for sure has to be Janet Weiss of Sleater-Kinney
Glenn Kotche!
I can't believe no-one has said Glenn Kotche from Wilco. He's AMAZING...plays subtle, but interesting beats and sometimes melodic percussion at the same time. All the while looking as though it's the easiest thing in the world.
these at the mo'
Jimmy Camberlin - Pumpkins

Gabe Serbian (The Locust)
Mario Rubalcaba (Hot Snakes)
Paul Phillips (Meet Me In St. Louis)
Gellend Adler (Arnocorps)
Ben Standage (Down I Go)
I saw Primus when Herb was still the drummer.
also Soundgarden (Matt Cameron)
honorable mentions to Sky Larkin and Shield Your Eyes
i wanna see Primus so bad !
pity those bar-stewards wont tour over here, Herb is a fantastic drummer
henri from Shield Your Eyes is such a good drummer.
Last show i saw them at, someone bet him £20 he couldn't play the whole set with a full backpack on. And he did. And never missed a beat.
Quality.
I like that.
mine
Andy Knowles (former Fiery Furnaces now Franz Ferdinand I think)
Brian Viglione (Dresden Dolls)
Jon Theodore (formerly of The Mars Volta)
Jeremy Barnes (A Hawk and a Hacksaw when he used to do the strap on stick thing. Neutral Milk also but I didn't see them.)
Kurt Dahle (New Pornographers)
in no order
Herb (Primus)
Matt Cameron (Soundgarden)
Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees)
Paul Bostaph (Slayer)
someone else
good call on Herb
though Primus probably automatically win every category of this type of thread.
mine would be:
Chris Corsano
Laurence Pike (Pivot)
John Stanier (Battles)
Jan Christian L. Kyvik (Noxagt)
Ash from Charlottefield
everyone's already mentioned

matt tong bloc party..yeah they're poor now but seeing him live on silent alarm tour was a real treat
interpol drummer also knows how to hit hard and tight.
i guess they're not the most technical of drummers, but all great i think.
Good call on the Inerpol guy
He is incredibly watchable, unlike most.
65days drummer is the greatest man alive. Better than Buddah.
in fact, even better than Buddha too, if we're splitting hairs.
Uh.
Mastodon guy
Converge guy
Dillinger guy (old or new, same difference)
Big Business guy
Battles guy
are....
Stewart Copeland
David Francolini
Stephen Perkins
Dominic Luckman
Danny Goffey
.
matt tong and andy burrows are really the only ones which stand out for me. the rest is a big blob bass drum.
I'm not someone who really "looks out" for drummers...
they kinda keep rhythm and make extra noise where needed....
but
I saw the Secret Machines (support for a Mercury Rev tour I think) and I thought "Fucking hell" THAT is a drummer....
So him !
that bloke in
Calf By Calf
out of ones that ain't been mentioned
max roach- miles davis, charlie parker, charles mingus etc
?uestlove- the roots
john convertino- calexico
erik bodin- little dragon
the soulwax one
Well I don't think any of mine have been mentioned
But I highly rate David Silvera - he is a groove machine.
Chris Adler from Lamb of God is a solid beater
worlds most boring thread
coming from a drummer
tomorrow, 5 best guitarists you've ever seen..... etc etc ad nauseum
The drummer in white denim...
saw them recently and he was excellent. I don't know his name and can't be bothered looking at the sleeve notes or googling
already been mentioned
but I'd have to say Janet Weiss again. She is awesome.
It is a real geeky thread intit.
Chris Corsano and Mick Flowers were amazing when I saw them. One of the few times when something that has real potential to be a bit wank is actually amazing
This = great thread as ex-drummer.
Chris Pennie (ex-Dillinger, not as amazing in Coheed...in fact looking rather bored)
Danny Carey (Tool)
Travis Barker (ex-Blink, actually saw him with +44)
Tomas Haake (Meshuggah)
Matt Tong (Bloc Party)
Jon Theodore JUST misses out.
This is the best drumming video I've ever seen>
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=56sZOUPegUw
No joke, it's fucking brilliant. If you're at all interested in drumming/drummers you should watch.
ttng
The chap from this town needs guns is pretty fantastic. I can't remember his name though.
Steve Noble anyone?
he is utterly amazing.
the guy from Cinemechanica takes the piss
i was blown away by him live.
ash from charlottefield and glenn kotche are fantastic too.
Variety's the spice
Charlie Watts, Rolling Stones (awesome jazz drummer, doing the stones with his eyes closed)
Danny Carey, Tool
Ginger Baker, Cream (fans used to ask him if he was going to die tonight on the way into gigs)
Thomas Pridgen, Mars Volta
Gilson Lavis (for putting up with Jools Holland's boogie woogie for years)
Live? Top of my head:
Andy Ramsey - Stereolab
Gary Young (sober) - Pavement's first
The drumming Brian - Lightning Bolt
Bob D'Amico - Fiery Furnaces
Greg - Deerhoof
Possibly nobody new but ...
Todd Trainer (Shellac)
John Convertino (Calexico)
George Hurley (Minutemen)
Micheal Lee (Little Angels & Plant/Page)
Matt Tong (Bloc Party)
Travis Barker...
...is still the best drummer I’ve seen live, even after seeing TV on the radio, The Mars Volta and Queens of the Stone Age. This guy is amazing
Probably
Janet from Sleater Kinney
Scott from The National
John from Battles
Brian from Yeah Yeah Yeahs
and someone else. Possibly from Lightning Bolt. Or DFA1979.
they is...
Stephen Morris
David Narcizo
Jim White
Todd Trainer
Damon Che
^yay
finally another shout for David Narcizo! Can't wait to see him again at the Breeders ATP. Stephen Morris is a good call too. About time this thread died, can someone total up the results please, I can't be arsed. Must be Stanier surely?
All the ones I can think of are already mentioned
except Alfredo Hernadez......oooooft.
Check this out kids......
Alan "Reni" Wren, Stone Roses.
God sent him!
the don cab guy
although a bit of asshole, is an amzing drummer when i saw him at hakoben.
Thomas Pridgen with the Mars Volta in March I think
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Pridgen
Actually jaw dropping stuff.
Modest Mouse had two drummers when I saw them. It was similarly ace.
Will have to think about another three.
5 of the best I have been lucky enough to see...
Jorma Vik of The Bronx. One of the heaviest in rock and creator of fantastic fills.
Charles Hayward of This Heat. Never saw This Heat but lucky enough to see Charles play solo a couple times. Unique and amazing.
Dale Crover of The Melvins. Goes without saying.
Eddie Prevost of AMM. An inventor of seminal styles.
And one from the new... Nestor Matthews os Sky Larkin. Few British drummers have the energy and chops of this dude. OK, I'm biased but he destroys every time.
mmm
Jimmy Chamberlain
The guy from Deerhoof
The guy from Secret Machines
Ben from Cats In Paris
The guy from Dirty Three
I saw Chris Corsano drum with someone. Can't remember who. But he didn't do anything cool.
Han Bennick
Can't believe he hasn't be mentioned already
+ Chris Corsano + Alex Neilson
