Why Billy Mahonie were fucking Genius
Yeah that is right I said. Not all that long ago existed a band which I got to see quite a few times. Based in London, Billie Mahonie already onto a cracker with an excellent band name (check IMDB if you don't know) were a kick ass instrumental band.
This afternoon I stumbled across their album 'what becomes before' and although it is in some respects to long, it is also packed with some of the best ball smashing riffs you will ever hear.
I remember the first time we got the to play for our label party (unLabel) with Econoline, Stanton and a few others and they were shit hot then so much so that Dusseldorf of afformentioned album has been a riff in my head ever since.
Who else saw them? rated them?

yes
they were class, saw them a few times. I was going to say one of their songs which name i cant remember but i know it was a place was always a favourite of mine but you went and mentioned dusseldorf anyway!
Hear hear
Never saw them live, much to my regret but they were a fucking excellent band. Catchy tunes too.
they were goooood
i saw them many a time.
yeah!
They did a short tour a couple of years ago but I couldn't make it to any of the shows as I think my band was on tour at the same time. Really annoyed I missed it.
I only saw them once, supporting Seafood in July 2001. One of the bass players later joined Seafood on guitar.
Both albums, The Big Dig and What Becomes Before are great.
did you go to the ulu show?
i saw them with seafood at ulu, round about that time i think. it was a bit good.
that's the one!
easyworld and kaito also played - don't make shows like that any more!
simpler times.
sigh.
though i'm not sure any of us should be reminiscing about easyworld.
I was there too!
My very young female friend snogged the singer from Easyworld that evening.
those were the days
HAHA
I read that in a thick Yorkshire accent
thinking that it was a solo artist.
i think i have a split 7" they did with the Jesus Years
same band?
their singer was rubbish
good drummer though
singer haha
oh funny, easyworld man I remember them, less said the better.
Dust by Billie Mahonie was a pretty good release too.
I remember them
always being a pretty engrossing band live the times I saw them.
The Big Dig was pretty ace too. I might need to go dig that one out tonight, arf arf.
Saw them a couple of times
and hated them. But I don't like instrumental bands.
nur nur nur
nur nur nur
I'm pretty sure
I have a remix that Hefner [or possibly just Darren Hayman] did of one of their songs, adding vocals to it. It was very nice.
YES!
They remain one of my all-time favourites to this day. Saw them play in Oxford with Seafood on a Fierce Panda tour in 1998 or '99 and they totally blew me away. Saw them whenever I could after that (about 5 times, last time at the Spitz in London), and then they went off my radar. I only have the first two records (Big Dig and What Comes Before), but I looked recently and discovered they had at least one other that I'd missed. Seem to have disbanded though.
They were absolutely amazing. So pleased to know someone else out there remembers them. Not many bands who you can say changed your idea of music, but they genuinely did. Respect!!!
good friends
Good friends, good band. Still technically together, but Gav lives in Norway.
My old band toured with BM and our drummer had to play for one show as Howard bust his hand punching Gav in the face. True story. I don't suppose they'll mind that info being known now about 8 yrs have passed. Ho ho.
Yup
Much preferred them during the 'Big Dig' tour though. They came to Glasgow and were utterly' amazing. When they came back after 'What Becomes Before', they had all manner of lineup changes and weren't as amazing.
