Earth to Lightening Bolt:

matt [Edit] [Delete] 15 replies 14:52, 7 September '05
I know you think you're being subversive, or something, but there's a reason venues have stages, and it's SO THE AUDIENCE CAN ACTUALLY SEE WHAT THE FUCK'S GOING ON.

I spectacularly fail to get why so many indie/hardcore kids cream their pants over this band. Anyone care to enlighten me?

if you dont know now, you will never know. i personally enjoy them, but i can imagine some people pretend to.

i dont think theres one solid reason, maybe its the energy. or the masks..

Lightning Bolt are easily one of the best live experiences there is to be had, the reciprocal energy of the audience becomes part of the show. Its not like they play arena sized venues..

I've never seen them so what's this whole thing that people either like or hate about their live shows.

        In absolute agreement... it's senses-frying, mind-battering JOY.

You see this is the pant-creaming I speak of. I just don't see it. I must be missing some kind of rock gene that enables one to feel any emotional intensity in that kind of noise. I just find it unimaginative and tiresome. Other kinds of noise I'll get really into, say if there's some hint of an intense melodic component, or if the noise uses silence and contrast and sharp engaging rhythms... but hm.

      • Re: Earth to Lightening Bolt:

I dunno, both times I've seen them the majority of the audience hasn't been able to see. They have energy but nothing about their music really sticks in my mind... just another indie hardcore racket without any kind of hook or memorable beat to it. I guess their drummer is good technically but it just kinda washes over me.

        • Re: Earth to Lightening Bolt:

My main beef though was with the fact that they choose to play in corners in venues that have proper stages. I expect they try and justify it with some kind of 'we're so DIY and down with the kids' philosophy but in practise it's just incredibly annoying. They want the feel of some kind of scene house party but it doesn't translate well to even medium sized shows. Only the front row can see.

          • Re: Earth to Lightening Bolt:

You're attitude seems quite belittling, they don't try and justify anything. If you're interested in knowing what they're about then you should watch the dvd..If you're not then don't let it bother you, its not like they're forced down your throat, and there will always be someone else who'll take your place down the front.

            • Re: Earth to Lightening Bolt:

I guess. But y'know what if I'm paying good money to see a band I expect them to play somewhere I have a hope in hell of actually catching a glimpse... It's not like the venue didn't have a proper stage, there was a stage and they didn't use it. It feels like they're trying to make some kind of statement at the expense of a large section of the audience and I find that annoying.

              • Re: Earth to Lightening Bolt:

It does sound kind of silly to not use a stage if it's there.

            • Re: Earth to Lightening Bolt:

I agree with the sentiment that lightning bolt live can be somewhat frustrating if you are not one of the lucky audience members in the first five or so rows around the band. Even if they play in large venues (im thinking of their electric ballroom gig) they don't use the more powerful venue PA system. Much of their sound and kinetic energy is absorbed by the surrounding audience leaving 4/5ths of the auidence struggling to get a decent impression of whats going on. Luckily at the ballroom they put up a projector screen and i spent most of the gig staring at this screen feeling pretty left out of the action.

              • Re: Earth to Lightening Bolt:

You're right the sound is really awful too once the first few rows soaks up the output of their amps
                Maybe that's why I don't get them.

It just comes across as a silly elitist way to conduct a show. Maybe it's well-intentioned but it doesn't come across that way.

                  I understand your views.

But, having seen them twice both times in the front row I can tell you, they're great.

That was cool, at ATP when they played outside their chalet because everyone could get on the second floor and then have a good view.
