amazingly underrated? Just listening to Lycanthropy, its brilliant.
and have been a big fan since lycanthropy but i think he just lost his head round about the magic position time
I might even like The Magic Position best of all. The title track is brilliant. By many accounts he sounds like a right wanker but that wouldn't make him the first in my music collection.
It's almost unbearable. I mean, I know a lot of my record collection was made by people I wouldn't get on with, but it just comes across so strongly from Mr Wolf. I actually haven't even been able to enjoy the records since seeing him, which is obviously a shame...
a real highlight
He didnt seem annoying or full of himself.
I love the guy, even if the magic position was a bit patchy.
i used to have strong negative opinions about patrick wolf's music until i saw him live at koko 2 years ago since then very much enjoying his music tho i think i appreciate it more when it is live compared to on CD.
he is a very good example of a songwriter/entertainer.
I was listening to Wind In The Wires on the way to work, can't wait for the 2 new albums!
He's got a very fanatical fanbase, he should probably be more well known than he is, however, I think people get a little caught up in his ways.
That is not to say his albums aren't brilliant; though I was a little dissapointed with "The Magic Position".
but was dissapointing, his first albums are textbook in balance of Electronical and classic music writing... I have confidence his next 2 albums will be really strong because of the amount he has to build from over the past 2 years (being in the media spotlight and wanting to quit music) + his recent demos sounded A LOT darker circa Lyncanthropy.
I cant really say boring, may not be to other peoples tastes but its undoubtabtly interesting at least.
you can describe any of his albums as 'dull'. I agree the whole Magic Position thing was a bit of a mistake as an era (although I do think that album has some great songs on) but hopefully he will come out and make a wonderful album as a result.
Did anyone seem him on the stripped down acoustic tour he did last November? He was utterly wonderful.
Why on Earth would anyone do that?! I refuse to believe that the majority of his fans like him for the sake of appearances. He's fucking awesome. The Magic Position obviously split opinion, but in spite of that, he's incredible.
I would seriously doubt his entire fanbase 'pretend to like his music'. Or anyone's fanbase for that matter.
It also seems a little general to say that 'the best songs are about other people', when history seems to wholeheartedly disprove this, both in really popular and 'cult' song forms.
I've had the first 2 albums for ages now and The Magic Position is BORING so I'm beginning to lose interest. From what I've heard of the new stuff it's sounding interesting though. I would only say that Lycanthropy was underrated if considering how much everyone went on about TMP when it came out, even though Lycanthropy is infinitely better.
theres nothing even remotely listenable about him
What an odd thing to say...
but then neither is Morrissey and I adore them both.
He is really harsh with the musicians that tour with him and a bit of a perfectionist. He was amazing in Cardiff Barfly which is an awful venue, he got really fustrated when he got a part of Magpie wrong.
I can see that his work is rather love/hate and luckly for him I love it. He's rather a talented musician, he can play loads of weird and wonderful instruments.
His set was my highlight of Reading last year
He was also excellent live in Cambridge. I've heard very mixed things about him as a personality, but hey, I'm listening to him, not living with him, so what the jack do I care?
I loved Lycanthropy SO much. Maybe anything he'd done after that would have been anti-climactic for me.
probably because most of his fanbase is now made of despicable, awful cunts. Girls covered in glitter, telling me how much they want to be penetrated by him. Fuck off and burn.
I like all three of his albums, probably in chronological order of goodness, but never EVER see him live. It makes it impossible to appreciate it on the same level. On Lycanthropy he's something abstract and beautiful, really mysterious and interesting. On stage he's a simpering, pilled up drag queen, and now I can't be enchanted by him anymore.
(Troubadour/MP tour though he played almost entirely from Lycanthropy - 2006) as one of my all time fav gigs. I never saw Ziggy Stardust and this show felt like...seeing Ziggy Stardust.
I was still a child when you caught me and tied me to your bed
you gave me shoes and pretty clothes, and i gave you what i had between my legs
Just a rite of passage, you held me down and said
"I'm gonna be your right of passage, so boy you better spread, spread em"
You said.."run run run as fast as you can but you cant run run from the childcatchers hands"
I wrote your name in my shit across the town to warn the kids of your bloodshed
when i chased you with a burning cross, my mother she wanted you dead
she said "run run run as fast as you can but you cant run run from our law given hand"
"well i've got no time for victims and i don't think it was all that bad
and if you can't run to save yourself well then you deserve to be had
this is the age of constipation, this is the age of martyrdom
I think you even enjoyed it, I think I even saw you come"
i hate all this "apparently he's a right tosser" talk. what is the point in even saying that if it's just 'alleged', if you don't even know the guy? all this forum is these days is people going "oh he's a cunt" "oh no he's not" "oh she's a right bitch" "oh i heard she's ok" - does any of this even matter? surely all that matters is the music...? or is that a pretty jaded lookout on popular music these days? i dunno...
have expressed the above as vehemently as i paraphrased it just then, but the sentiment is there and it seems to pollute a lot of discussions on here (and elsewhere). it SUPER gets my goat.
man i love goat's cheese.
Yeah, he can play a few "weird and wonderful instruments", as someone on here wrote, but can he write a decent song? No.
and not only has he written a decent song, hes done so in many genres, keeping him an exciting prospect as you don't know what hes going to do next.
