Is his early albums like Abraxas as good as reviews make out, or as bad as his recent stuff?
watch all of this:
if you think "hmm, that was wanky and boring" then no, Santana are not good
if you think "holy shit, that's incredible. That's the sound of a band truly pouring themselves into the performance. That's fire and passion and freedom. That is music" then yeah, Santana are pretty aight
Pretty amazing in my opinion.
when you start playing those awful PRS guitars. One minute you slay, the next you're playing like that and writing tunes with Chad Kroeger
who's on drums?
pretty awesome though, right? I think he was 17 when this was done
plus chopstick-grip drummers get ten extra points before they even start playing cause they look so cool.

but his later stuff is a no no
the dual guitar attack is what makes it. You've got the solid, clean playing of the other guy mixed with the more expressive wail of Santana. And i'm a sucker for two leads in separate channels playing similiar figures
Haven't gone past there though (apart from the album with John Mclaughlin). Should really, the first 3 albums are in the sacred canon of "records i always want to listen to"
Abraxas slightly more song-oriented; avoid later stuff.
I saw Santana live once in Manchester; Earth, Wind & Fire were the support band.
