i'm listening to showtunes and it's bizarre.
Genius often implies the latter anyway, especially in music.
Really, sick of people trying to connect genius with mental health issues. It's bullshit, and it's offensive bullshit.
apologies for using the word 'insane' in a context that doesn't mean 'mentally ill' - I'm not implying genius is connected to mental illness.
does it mean? The only way I can interpret it as anything other than mental illness-related (something like "set apart by an unusual take on things", perhaps) is entirely circular.
He said the line of increasing 'fashionability' is tied at the ends so that being a fashion icon and looking a complete idiot are next to each other.
This most certainly also applies to intelligence.
I fear Mr Merrit crosses the line rather frequently.
...up until and including 69 Love Songs, but he really burnt himself out with that. Everything he has done since millennium has felt jaded, stilted, derivative and lacklustre. Still: Get Lost, 69LS, Charm Of The Highway Strip and the first Future Bible Heroes album remain great records.
I think Distortion is one of the better albums this year. California Girls is a great song.
I wouldn't call him insane. Highly inventive, but always within boundaries.
BUT the rest of the album seems a bit boring to me.
Although Showtunes IS nigh-on unlistenable. What A Fucking Lovely Day is a top tune, but I haven't felt the need to give the rest much time at all.
Distortion and i both have about 3 or 4 really great songs on them. Drive On Driver, California Girls, Too Drunk To Dream on Distortion, I Thought You Were My Boyfriend, I Don't Believe You and It's Only Time on i. It's Only Time is up there in my top something or other songs ever.
But yeah, considering how consistently great he was up until 69 Love Songs, he's been incredibly patchy ever since.
i and Distortion are both very good albums (although nowhere near 69 Love Songs or Get Lost), whilst The Gothic Archies' Tragic Treasury album is all kinds of marvellous.
One of the few absolute geniuses in modern music. 69 Love Songs alone earns him this title.
