is apparently 'cutting social satire', according to the book i'm reading right now. i was not aware of that!
It's possible Doctor Jones was a critique of western economic policy, but who can say.
while listening to a mark e smith interview from virgin radio a few years back he was pickin songs he liked, and to my amazement he picked this song!
I think I've heard that argued before...
by Dave Thompson. more of a reference book than anyhthing else, but it's got some interesting essays. Aqua? Alternative rock? Mmmmm
It's alright, but there's some strange inclusions and omissions, and some even stranger album ratings. I think that the Aqua entry must have been written by a total fanboy. Same with the St Etienne entry, reading that book, you'd think they were the Beatles or something...
it's erratic at best. the alarm bells started ringing when i saw 'isn't anything' was rated higher than 'loveless'...
the same. but 8 rather than 9 or 10
A social/feminist satire cunningly disguised in a kiddie friendly radio pop hit. It's essentially about appealing to the buying power of little girls who become pre-sexualized by advertising.
God I wish I'd bought the single. Also the video contains some incredible pastiche/references.
what's the point of satire if nobody's gonna get it? until it's pointed out over 10 years later?
must give it another listen, maybe it has something tp do with health policies in the third world
MTV2 used to play Turn Back Time occasionally on the 120 Minutes predecessor.

does that make me amazingly cool?
give yourself a biscuit
