mine must be ridiculously low, possibly single-figure.
recommend me some girly bands please.
only girls in the band?
I tried to work something out using my last fm but its too complicated with duel vocals and whatnot
in fact when the guitar comes in on Rainbow is cemented in my top-whatever favourite musical moments... bliss.
I could probably list them all in this post without it getting over long.
The Fiery Furnaces
Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville only though
I can't remember a drone/noise band really grabbing me like that before. Will be buying the EP judging by those myspace tracks.
at that shit.
You'll be wanting 'Cut' by the Slits and 'Horses' by Patti Smith.
And even then, they sound like men anyway.
if there is a female majority and/or the singer or songwriter is of that persuasion you're canny.
but to be honest it's guys who still rule the roost in my collection. Ummm. Best girly bands ever in my books is Electrelane, followed by Sleater Kinney. You should check out Au Revoir Simone as well. They have great songs and a smidge of sex appeal too.
but it depends how you mean...
the Unwound drummer is a girl, right? And I'm listening to Yo La Tengo right now, they have a girl in the band. Same with Sonic Youth.
I also really like Afrirampo - haven't listened to them in ages mind.
I quite like Bikini Kill too.
But yeah, not many.
I generally love female vocals...
although im not sure if they're 'lady' girls
are there any famous wacky-gendered bands?
i remember the singer from The Others was married to one but thats all i've got.
he clearly has no shame though; 'i have a friend named william, hes been my friend since we were young' any man who could release a song with those lyics is unlikely to care if people know he likes 'other' no matter how self hating he may or may not be.
and it could even be lower if not for the fact I purposely decided to add more female singer/songwriters to my collection awhile ago to counterbalance all the gruff male vocalists.
I've been digging the polly shang kuan band recently http://www.myspace.com/thepollyshangkuanband, who deal in a bewitching mix of ambient/psychedelic noise. And my default answer when it comes to recommending female singer/songwriters is Edith Frost.
into really few bands with girls in it but a fair few female singer/songwriters. But for new band check out The Rayographs they are ace
or is it Positive discrimination?
34 out of 274, according to last.fm. 8%. I suspect that proportion is at least slightly inflated by plays from my recommendations station, though.
So I guess that's 8% then?
like 50% of the bands have girls in, but the bands are usually 75% male. so technically only around 12.5% is only made by actual females
Hanne Hukklberg, Courtney Tidwell and St Vincent.
Should even things up a bit.
What is fucking WRONG with you people?!
LUSH LUSH LUSH LUSH LUSH.
i listen to A LOT of bjork and joanna newsom, and lots of cocteau twins and mbv and fiery furnaces
Have just been on a fact finding trip to Japan and come back with loads.
Heavily recommend My Dead Girlfriend, Xiongmao and Super Baby Face. And also Scandal, if you like rock bands entirely composed of Japanese school girls.
I'm sure my friend won't mind me plugging his magazine:
Dedicated to lady girls in music. It's really rather good.
I'll have a look at my ipod later on but I'm sure it's not above 5%.
There's plenty of girls around: Camera Obscura, Elephant Parade, Bare Knees, Kimya Dawson, Emmy The Great, Phoebe Kreutz, Slow Club, Fuck-Off Machete, Times New Viking
I guess it's mainly when I'm in a twee mode...
I blame society
so a fairly reasonable amount, with Sleater-Kinney, Mika Miko, Bikini Kill, Au Pairs and Life Without Buildings being some of my current favourites. Been giving The Frumpies and Partyline some spins over the last few weeks.
