everyone who go have a good time? shellac put everyone to shame with how good their costumes were.
My costume was much better.
great that bob weston kept in character :D
strike me as the type. Todd Trainer made an excellent Dracula.
I had a good time but I am never going to The Forum again. The door staff were all cunts. I don't smoke but the fact they wouldn't let anyone outside before 9.30 was ludicrous. They serve shit overpriced beer etc etc.
Please, if you're going to do a Release the Bats next year pick a better venue.
absolutely awful, every band sounded shit (even Lightning Bolt who were the only band who managed to make me feel anything at all, all evening but simply weren't loud enough/their sound just drifted off into the air)
let alone the fact, London. I'm jealous of birmingham-ers tonight.
I mean... really?
I thought it was all great fun. Shellac were the best I've seen them to date, Pissed jeans surprised me a lot and being 2 foot away from Lightning Bolt is always fun...
the sound was so so shit it was impossible to care, half the line up were fucking dull, and the not being able to leave when its an 8 hour event was just fucking unbelievable.
I was so looking forward to seeing the Bolt and although they themselves didn't disappoint; because they were amazing but it simply was the wrong venue to feel the REAL bolt live experience, it still wasn't as amazing as it should have been, and from the on the night just got worse and worse.
you could leave, wristbands were available
To get out we said we needed to get cash so they signed the back of our tickets. Didn't say anything about wristbands and we spoke to at least 3 of them.
Either way, it was a good night.
It was terrifying. I caught him/her out the corner of my eye stood in the dark, it was dead creepy
She (for it was a lady) tapped me on the shoulder when I was walking past and just waved at me slowly. I didn't recognise her and almost shat myself.
i dont think i actually spoke to her after her costume went on
Having been told, on this here board, by a Mr J Summers, that you could get a wristband and come and go as you pleased I arranged the night to be Lightning Bolt, then nice dinner with my girlfriend (who was really only there to be nice) meet up with soem friends, and we were then going to go back for LSF. So having queued for pissing ages we got in and were told there was no way we would be allowed out. I asked a few other folks who also said the same. We then watched lightning Bolt (pretensious), then tried again. I told the numbskull staff that there were definitely wristbands available as the promoter had told me himself, and was then directed to a nice lady in the ticket office who couldnt help us as it wasn't true.
So we had five and a half starving hours watching some of the worst bands of all time (please dont let this be a sign of what is going to be on at the spring ATP's). By joke band number four I was ready to quit and was blind drunk on £3.70 bottles of cider and so hungry I could have eaten my legs.
Of course Shellac totally owned the place, were amazing and I loved every second of their show. Crowd had really thinned out by that time though and was mainly just a typical dire london crowd looking bored and chatting.
Would have gone to the clearly going to be way better Birmingham show if I had known about it at the start.
or at least not in a bad way, its just the sound was so fucking shit that it failed the entire point of them live (they're supposed to play tiny shit holes and play so loud that you can feel it coming through you) although that said they only played like 3 old songs so most people would have been bewildered
I completely agree with you, unfortunately I was so hungry and tired I couldn't even be bothered to see Shellac and also wish I'd gone to Birmingham
there must have been a last minute change/mixup, that shouldnt have happened. apologies!
but no one seemed to know about them. I got a couple from the ticket office for my friend and I at about 8:30, but most of the bouncers had no idea they meant we could get in and out as we pleased.
How dare you call Pissed Jeans a joke band
but I just saw a band, who, let us not forget, are called Pissed Jeans (oooo a swear word - yawn) fronted by a guy in a mini dress, sounding like shit punks.
Maybe if i was allowed to eat they would have been better.
I thoroughly enjoyed LSF, and Shellac were good (not much interaction, mind) up until the point that some nerdy little prick windmill dancing hit me in the bollocks during Prayer to God, then some moron threw toothpaste across the crowd which pretty much covered my left side. I left not happy, but smelling rather mintyfresh.
thought the bands were great, well Shellac, Les Savy Fav and Pissed Jeans in particular. Om started to wear thin afrer a while, and Lightning Bolt were Lightning Bolt.
the security staff were a bit power-mad though. on the way in, they confiscated a girl's chewing gum!
Lightning Bolt were really not good last night in Birmingham. Half of the experience is in the volume, where did that go last night? I could hear myself think, thats not a good think even at the best of times. Shellac were awesome though
and loved the venue, so many easy places to get a view. Sound was alright too, def better than some I can think of.
had her gum confiscated. most of the door staff were utter cunts.
had a trememdous time dressing up but the sound was terrible. enjoyed some of lightning bolt (terrible sound), none of wooden shits or pissed jeans but OM, lsf and shellac were bleeding excellent. nice to have a long chat with bob weston earlier on too. wouldn't do it again mind. the place was full of trendy morons who stood stock still throughout shellac and lsf (barring the small yay kids "moshing" at the front).
you're becoming a parody of yourself
and the last comment was just pointlessly barbed.
comprised of people who like music like this is bound to face lots of pointless whinging about minor issues. It seems to be just something "we" do, depressingly. <----- SEE? Its all just whine whine whine.
Pissed Jeans were excellent, I didn't like them when I saw them at ATP, but they were ace here. LSF were great as ever and Shellac were outstanding. I enjoyed the zombie Q&A! The only band I didn't like were Wooden Shijps, they were boring. Lightning Bolt should stop being silly and play on a stage so small people can see them!
Security were a bit ridiculously strict, but it's a good venue. Security are always bastards at big places, it doesn't really affect my night!
Best costume was the man dressed as Andrew Sachs. Amazing.
He seemed elated when I recognised it and complimented him on it.
Are you me?
Well, actually I didn't so much compliment him on it as scream: "oh my God its Grim Fandango!" at my friends and then he went up and shook my hand.
or at least a friend of a friend. He'll be chaleting with us at NBC
I think a few folks were annoyed about the box impinging their view though
Just don't play a venue like the forum.
the sound was so muddy you could barely distinguish anything. Also with it being limited viewing they should have maybe had them projected onto the screens up above. It was so annoying having to queue for really poor quality sound when they came on. Letdown.
straight away I assumed that's what the screens would be for, but it never came
Albini dressed up for the london dates!?? :(
i had a fun time.
she was the hag I started with, setting the tone for the whole evening. She was a fucking tit witch.
LB were amazing - they played loads of new stuff that had some of the biggest riffs they've ever written and seemed quite prog in places... I predict the next album will be their push for commercial success ;) As for the rest, I was surprised how much I liked Pissed Jeans, Wooden Shijps weren't as dull as I thought they might be, Om completely mesmerised me and Shellac just rocked the hell out of the place. Two thumbs up to ATP/Capsule for the decorations and double woop for Staropramen :)
only wooden shjips surpassed previous performances (really impressive this time, not so before), but LSF and shellac were still fine.
best costume was the guy dressed as terry butcher. i know nothing about horror films, but that i liked.
I was speaking to one of them and he said hardly any knew who they were meant to be!
lightning bolt great (first time i've seen them)
pissed jeans good fun and entertaining
wooden shjips bit dull
om got boring
les savy fav again great laugh but the whole "wooh i'm mad me" thing just dragged on a bit
shellac amazing but i had to leave after 'end of radio' so probably missed all the best songs.
Om were awesome. What a drummer! Shellac were incredible too, staying in character all night.
Shame that only about 20 people got to see Lightning Bolt though. I was about 4 feet away from them and couldn't see a thing. In a venue that size it's almost cruel that such a tiny fraction of the audience got to see the band. Just play on a stage and give your audience something.
True about the door staff being a bunch of knuckleheads but what big venue is that not true of?
they were just doing there job. they weren't alllowing people out until 9.30 (changed to 9 by popular demand) and stopping people from going outside with drinks. OK, the chewing gum thing is a little bit daft, but they turned a blind eye on people smoking weed.
a Les Savy Fav-Shellac double header with just one of the other bands supporting (I'd go for Pissed Jeans) would have worked better, but still had a fun night, just felt like Lightning Bolt didn't work, Wooden Shjips/OM was a bit of a slog, and the sound and staff didn't help matters. But fancy dress was a blast, Shellac were awesome.
... can be found here, if anyone's interested. kudos to me for making tim harrington look DIRECTLY INTO MY SOUL for one picture:
Only the Friday worth it or something? Boo. Hiss.
