Well done, NME.
As far as I'm aware they're going to be handed the 'God-like Geniuses' award which is given to bands and others connected to the music industry who have made a very consistent and important contribution to British music - and have over a considerable period demonstrated a stacks of talent.
Now frankly such accolades should have been heaped on The Cure a long time ago as even the most cynical of us must admit that they've made about five or six solid to excellent albums, they regularly draw devoted fans due to their ability to play very good live performances, are recognised around the world, have contributed to post-punk, 80s pop, and even an entire style. With the release of 4:13 dream, Bobby Smith has topped this all off by showing that he can still right some bloody good songs, all these years later.
On reflection, The Cure have a right to such recognition. There are a lot of other great bands that deserve that too, but one step at a time...
awaiting a review from The Staff
to make this announcement, but they're worthy winners regardless.

I could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure the Manics were announced well in advance of this year's NME Godlikery too.
