Easy for me, I only went once- The Lemonheads in 1992. I know some of you will have been a kabillion times...
first time i saw flaming lips, first date on the yoshimi tour, AMAZING.
that alfie/starsailor/amen/jj72 one was a fun night, just for the stupidity of the bill.
i love love love the astoria. its so shit and toilet venuey and thus great. looking forward to giving it a good send off with the squarepusher and fantomas shows in december.
I hadn't heard Amen at the time and thought they were ace.
Flaming Lips - 2002
Idlewild - 1999
Super Furry Animals at 1 in the afternoon when I hadn't been to sleep - 1999
Trail of dead / Peaches / Strokes / RFTC - 2001
Wilco - 2004
with Battles supporting was amazing whenever that was
sound was awful. battles were on way too early and played a short set. I actually got my money back from the promoter on that one. my favourite would be arcade fire
I had a great time... I had had a few though and it was my very first time seeing battles.
It was absolutely incredible! No support act so they played and played for ages. I had no idea there's be 10 - 11 of them and they were all going for it putting on a show and clearly digging it. From the opening note of K Accidental the hairs on the back of my neck were standing to attention and fist raised to the sky in ecstacy. What a night.
I can't decide which..both were immense.
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci+Broadcast+Mogwai+Pavement (1997)
Quasi+Hefner+Elliott Smith+Sebadoh (1999)
Bob Tilton+Clinic+Bonnie 'Prince' Billy+Mogwai (1999)
Peaches+The Strokes+Rocket From The Crypt+Trail Of Dead (2001)
Final Fantasy+Arcade Fire (2005)
Trail of Dead in 2002 (alright, line-up was nowhere near as good as 2001 but an amazing shaw anyway and the first outing for loads of Source Tags songs
Also The D12 with Eminem show a few years ago, if just for the novelty of seeing someone that huge (at the time) in a small venue, plus the support group were amazing, though didn't ever find out who they were. Got a bit violent afer the show as was full of utter cunts though.
My bandmate would stump for seeing A Perfect Circle there when James Iha was playing with them and possibly the first UK Raconteurs show but that's probably cos he elbowed kate moss in the boob or something
Went there when was 13-15 but out of those gigs would definitely go for System of a Down I think! Bout 1999
but me and my mate decided not to get tickets as we were a bit young (14/15), same for Pavement's last gig at Brixton Academy in December and Rage Against The Machine at the Astoria again in January 2000.
Nov 26th 1998
Mogwai + Bardo Pond (2 nights) 2003
last show with richey and first gig i went to.
I think it was my first ever gig
The Presidents of the USA comeback show in April 2004 (i think?)
Everclear's last show in the UK in Oct 2000
Just because they were probably the two most fun shows I've ever been to.
The best I've seen there though was probably the second day of Mogwai's two day stint in October 2003 - the version of Mogwai Fear Satan that night was probably the best thing I have ever seen.
I was also at the At The Drive In gig in Feb 2001, but I got a bit swallowed by the crowd and got kicked in the face so my memories are hazy!
it was the first (and turned out, last) "big" gig they did over here and was full of twats. When someone crowdsurfed they went mental and said something like "We just came back from a festival where a girl died and you're acting like you're at a beach party", they were referring to the Big Day Out festival where a girl died.
I saw a bootleg of it a few years later and watching it, there's no wonder they split up shortly afterwards. They look so unhappy.
you were a celebrity amongst me and my friends "the tall guy that always stands in front of you at gigs".
Ben Folds Five/Fountains of Wayne - 1997
Sebadoh - 1996 although may have been 1996...Harmacy tour
Fu Manchu - 2002
Nice venue, shame about the Red Stripe.
Also Kings of Leon before the release of Because of the Times was legendary.
Bright Eyes/Rilo Kiley was a good gig too. As were Franz just after their first album.
Haven't been to the Astoria in ages - when does it shut?
..trail of dead/RFTC/Strokes/Peaches 2001
QOTSA 2000 (with AB/CD !)
Throwing Muses 2003
That would've been sweet!
:( I stand near the back these days!
my first non-arena gig, and i loved it
awwww astoria :(
the destruction of any live music venue is a bad thing?
And I quite like the Astoria. So some gigs end at 10? Brilliant, I can go to the pub afterwards and talk about what we just saw. So the beer is expensive and there's not much choice? It's a gig in London, it's not pound night at the Varsity. They do both lager and cider, so I couldn't care less. And I like the layout of the place, and the upstairs and downstairs options.
I don't have some romantic attachment, I rarely care where a gig is being played. But one less venue, and one so central, isn't good.
what stupid article
the Quasi / Hefner / Elliott Smith / Sebadoh in 99
and LCD soundsystem last year knocked my socks off too
that LCD gig was a cracker.
Senser + Sleeper + Miranda Sex Garden + Sharkboy - 1995
Kids Near Water supporting Sum 41 - 2001
Worst was Bob Mould opening up for Flaming Lips in 2002. Doing his terrible disco set.
Bright Eyes (I don't even really like the guy but this was awesome)
Alec Empire / 80's Matchbox B Line Disaster
YYY's / The Kills / Har Mar Superstar / C64
Trail of Dead... / RFTC / Peaches / Strokes
AFI in 2001 (I think) Stamping Ground and Midtown supported, it was quality.
The Bronx in 2007 on that Kerrang! Tour thing with Biffy.
Would've loved to of seen that.
For me Ash in 1996 i guess or Death Cab. Not really been to many decent gigs at the Astoria
a few good ones
Peaches / Strokes / Trail Of Dead / Rocket from the crypt
Music / Doves (I think keane also played this but nevermind)
was the 3rd band not The Vines? I was at that, if so.
Wilco in 2004
Cardiacs x million but 1988 was the best.
blur+ the bees
sleepy jackson+ snow patrol nme tour
all ok, but don't like the place, poor view, too rammed. not arsed that it's getting knocked down, london's got more venues of that size and it ain't beautiful.
is the small venue getting knocked down next door? radio4 + out hud was fantastic there.
what, like Koko?
I'm going to see the bluetones play all of 'expecting to fly' there in December, so I'm sure that will be the best gig the place has ever had.
enjoyed the following shows:
Mudhoney, Tad & Nirvana - Christmas 1989
Screaming Trees - summer 1997
Teenage Fanclub a year or two ago
Super Fury Animals, Mogwai & Arab Strap at some NME Brats thing
Interpol at some NME Brats bash
but for every good show I've seen at this flea pit I've seen a bunch of stinkers.... Sebadoh, Pavement, Afghan Whigs, Mark Lanegan - all good bands/artists play decidedly average shows there. I saw the Mission play there in 1987 or something... the shame:)
...there was some excellent jungle nights there, particularly Wonderland which was every Saturday from 93-95 or so
First gig I saw there was a hip hop night in 1987 with Just Ice, Derek B and a couple of others and the same problems that plagued the venue were evident then - poor sound and terrible security.
Raven security (the guys that were there late 80's/early 90's) were notorious for putting the boot in for no reason and chucking people down the stairs for fun. I remember some metal gig where it just got way out of hand when they weer laying into people for no reason at all.
I don't think I've been there for about 5 years now - last time I was doing merch for a band so didn't get to see that much anyway.
Can't remember loads i've been to there though.
