Where to start?
start with latest one 'In the absence of truth' and work backwards from there (Panopticon next then Oceanic etc)
It worked for me!
I anticipate most people who respond to this will say start with Oceanic, however.
I would say start with Panopticon, as I did. I actually haven't liked their other albums
Oceanic - A towering masterpiece. Harsh and Brutal but with a real sense of beauty buried under there.
Panopticon - Similar vein to the above but perhaps a midge more 'accessible' due to being more sonically varied.
In the Absense of Truth - A superb record (fuck the haterz who want them to produce Oceanic over and over again). It strays from the consistently crushingly heavy template of its predecessors and has some more quiet and reflective moments as well as interspersing the growling with actual tuneful singing. THis makes the crushingly heavy bits stand out more and gives the record a huge dynamic and emotional range. It is heavy, well produced and if it weren't for fucking with the expectations of the hardcore fans it would be hailed as a modern classic.
who else makes records that sound even remotely like 'In the absence'? Possibly Neurosis come closest. In Tool's wildest wet dreams they sound like this I suppose.
I've never heard anything that mixes the heavy intensity and the melodic as well as 'In the absence'
I would consider myself a reasonable fan of both those bands but they are no-where near ISIS.
if u like that then panopticon... both are amazing
It's closer to oceanic, but in between 'oceanic' and 'absence' (stylistically and chronologically).
Take a look at 'In Fiction' (there's videos on youtube, slightly cut down, but the brunt of the song is there), I think that's a good start point.
Don't forget 'celestial' though, the way people described it, i thought it'd be a massive noise-psychadelia-ambient mess, whereas it's actually pretty focussed and so on at times. Basically, not as inaccessible as people made out to me. Plus it has some awesome tunes on it (The Tower for a start) and a really good cross album linkage
within the album i mean. As in the album works as a whole.
DONT forget celestial
and dont forget the mosquito control e.p. its awesome.. some of the most crusherating guitar sounds ever heard are on that e.p.
talking about the nightclub in Nottingham
See them live as soon as possible though.
around the time they're doing ATP. I've got tickets to see them and Torche in Sheffield 7th Dec. Come on!! Saw them there last year and they were awesome!
