I'm not sure what to make of this
started off badly and has gone downhill ever since. I also noticed I won't be buying any of the albums reviewed, it's looking like a bad month for records. Oh, except Fucked Up, I quite fancy that and it's on emusic.
it's never been a good magazine.
it's kind of strange.
cover liz green, so fair play to them for that, but their reviews are too enthusiastic. probably only get it for long journeys in the future, or if someone good's on the cover.
They serve no purpose. If you don't like something, don't cover it.A negative review is nearly always the reviewer trying to be clever or kidding themselves that their taste matters.
Positive reviews are harder to write, because you have to say WHY you like something and communicate this to others.
I appreciate that some albums have such a mainstream media impact that they have to be covered - Oasis, Metallica, Keane, Kaisers etc, but there really is very little point on slagging off something that only a vanishingly small sector of the populace will ever have heard of.
and a dismissive one paragraph "review" (though tbh don't know how i would rate it if i had to...)
cover story (Miranda Sawyers' encounter with Grace Jones) was classic though, really funny! http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2008/oct/12/grace-jones-hurricane
but what I will give 'em credit for, is that they cover such a wide breadth of things that you'd rarely seen given 'big' coverage in print form. A good example is the box review of the new Bobo Stenson album.
