What is his best release in your opinion? I can't stop listening to The Letting Go at the moment. Great stuff.
I See A Darkness.
Also recommended: Superwolf, Arise Therefore, Viva Last Blues.
Pretty much everything he's done is great, though.
and Superwolf are my favourites
it is impossible to listen to it on my Ipod. It is so quiet that I can't hear it over the rumble of the tube. I suppose albums aren't recorded with this problem in mind.
I just bought the new one yesterday and i'm not that impressed, but I wasn't that impressed with I See A Darkness & Master and Everyone at first but I love them now. So who knows.
and really like it
what else should i get?
Any of the Bonnie Prince Billy full length are probably worth getting. I'm not sure about Sings Greatest Palace Music though.
Johnny Cash went up to him and said "Hey, you're Will Oldham".
I find that a great story, being recognised by the Cashmeister General.
(with Oldham on backing vocals) is about as good as music gets.
But a happy one.
I thought three people had agreed with me on DiS.
I'd never felt so fulfilled.
compared to Billy's own version. Their vocals don't work together
"I'm Johnny Cash - alright!"
That would have been aces.
I see a darkness songwise, though I havent delved further into his non bonnie output
is my favourite although probably not to everyone's taste. I also love Palace's mini album Hope and Lost Blues and Other Songs vol 1 is essential (Ohio River Boat Song is worth the admission price alone). Joya is also splendid.
is the best song ever made.just get all the palace stuff....
his new album, the live one,i was at that gig
I got it today.
got into the new record. Listened to it a bunch of times, but it's still doing nothing for me. "So Everyone" is quite nice, but the songs just really aren't that memorable or interesting compared to most of his back catalogue.
But all of his releases under various pseudonyms are all fucking brilliant in their own unique way. He's seriously fucking good and I reckon he could be really big if he wanted to be.
is one of the most gorgeous albums I own and I play it endlessly.
Then I think it's Master & Everyone, Viva Las Blues and then I See a Darkness (which I think it hugely overrated apart from the title track - but still wonderful)
That said, for some reason, I've hardly listened to The Letting Go and I know I should....
is is best imo. Although for someone so prolific, he hasn't really done much wrong. And I quite like Greatest Palace Music, if you approach it with the tongue in cheek attitude he clearly did, the songs on it are still undeniably great.
