I've got three Christmas cards from Devin Townsend.
was at one of my old housewarmings
at the 2004 Leeds festival
Mark E.Smith from The Fall was there too.
I once had some UB40 at a party of mine, but they were rubbish.
Nico and Mak E Smith are deities.
I was there in 1974 at the first Suicide practices in a loft in New York City.
I was working on the organ sounds with much patience.
I was there when Captain Beefheart started up his first band.
I told him, "Don't do it that way. You'll never make a dime."
I'm loosing my edge ;)
At the time I was a 19 year old twat though (as opposed to a 35 year old one now) so I look back at these days and shudder.
at Luton airport.
Then he got clean. Who the fuck does he think he is? Davina McColl or somethin'?
I bet it is.
it's not even one of my favourite Limmy videos
on the ten hour bus trip to London.
If we're all going to Zonino and we're all going by megabus, I'll do it again. It'll become my "thing".
I've always wanted to be the weirdos on a Megabus, rather than being a norm acting all imtimidated by them.
All the DiSers in Scotland should go, then we can all be like "Ladz on Toor!" and stuff and hit London like a tornado. It'll be mad fun.
when I can just click it. Gimme a second... Aha! I was right! Take that world!
at the Troubadour.
you could have put an end to the suffering of music fans everywhere.
(the thread said "notable" not necessarily good, eh.)
where on the body did you touch him
I have got to second base in a bed, a bed where both Feist and Kate from the Long Blondes have had sex (though not at the same time).
Try to beat that for tenuousness.
met Leonard Cohen once and I've interviewed Low. Those are good things.
how did you know that both feist and kate from the long blondes had used the bed for sexing?
It was when I was going out with my last gf. She was staying at her friends' place, some guy who works for Rough Trade (the label, not the store). When I first went there she answered the door expecting Feist - "she's over here almost every day, and when she's over I have to go down to the all-night cafe and drink coffee until they're done." It was a very small apartment, one room with a bed and a sofa, so if sex was had then it was had on that bed. Plus he'd apparently just had a fling with Kate before this.
How long ago was this? Hasn't Miss Feist been seeing that guy Kevin Drew for ages?
Which is only notable because a) I'm just some tosser off the internet, and moreover b) I'd never spoken to Junior before he accurately guessed my name. (NB. Kelly might know too, I don't know for sure)
but it is quite possible that nothing of the sort happened at all.
and Junior told me to try it on because the sizes were messed up. That could be seen as flirting, but as I'm a 6 foot 1 man, I think he was probably just concerned about customer satisfaction.
the guitarist from the teenagers
one of sigur ros' touring band
on the top of your browser?
i'm really hoping its neneh cherry though
i fancy her loads. are you in her band?
but I toured doing multi instrumentalist duties with them a couple of years ago and I do remixes for them and stuff
I have loads more too
but seeing as how I'm using my real name on this thing it is probably best not to get into it
Ended up getting laddered with Jeff Beck, who just happens to be their neighbour, and laughing about cake, politics and his wife's breasts, to name but a few subjects. Nice guy - didn't mention music once!
admittedly it's 'Reading Elvis' and he's not a musician, but i'm still going to count it as he's been in the paper
I used to see him on my way to TVU everyday. He'd be walking down the kings road at the same time everyday like clockwork
with faris out of the horrors
...how bad I thought Shed Seven were...turns out it was them minus Witter. I also let Brett Anderson go before me at the bar at the Camden Crawl.
played at my Aunts wedding.
Billy (steven) Bragg was on our christmas card list until we moved a few years ago and lost everything.
stayed at my house once, along with a couple of The Mekons.
with marc riley and guy garvey last christmas. great times. though myself and garvey did have differing views on amy winehouse.
bought me a McDonalds and gave me £50 to buy him some trainers the same as mine (unfortunately the shops had closed).
oh, and Jeff Walker from Carcass was at my brother's wedding.
I was just about to say that Jeff Walker from Carcass was at my wedding.... and my bro was once offered £50 by Flavor Flav to go buy him some trainers.
Did'nt we also once insult Geezer Butler for looking like himself?
Probably my favourite was having a 3/4 hour chat with Conrad Keely. He bought me a drink after. Really nice guy.
the one who did "dream catch me"
I don't think he's Scottish but nevertheless, well done sir!
he played Connect before he was big to a very large crowd, i put two and two together..
having spoken to him at a couple of random folk festivals, he does seem like a genuinely lovely guy. And his guitar playing is very impressive.
appalling music from an apparently insufferable trustafarian type, but a lovely guy when you meet him...
in the flat of a member of half man half biscuit
and i met him last summer. he has some kind words to say about my music. that was it... (awaits mass denigration of Bono)
i've met him quite a few times at gigs, pubs, just out and about, and have his number.
I phone-interviewd him once. He was quite dull, though my questions weren't exactly inspired.
is/was the lead singer of the Cooper Temple Clause.
My Dad went on holiday with him I think. I have some of their early vinyls as well.
I think I should win.
one of the coopers is my friend, and iv met another one a few times too. both great guys.
one of them twice, quite a nice guy, made a bit of an arse of myself though.
in my house on Friday. Neither of us won.
james hetfield last month in the 02 arena. twice.
and i've slept in the singer of the Mystery Jets bed about a year ago.
Had a McDonalds with Simon from Biffy Clyro a few years ago, odd.
My ex-girlfriend's family friends' kids were the two siblings out of Rolo Tomassi.
i once had my ticket stamped on a southwest trains train by Gary Numan. and he looked exactly like him and everything, but i guess it could have been an obsessive fan.
with half of British Sea Power, it was really uncomfortable because they all insisted on sleeping on the floor and giving us the bed. They're all lovely people though.
told me to fuck off once, I was only 15 :/
that was matey from the fratellis wasn't it?
then im cousins with one of the singers in McFly, he's alright.
when we were 16/17, we had to stay in a travelodge because we cocked it all up and couldnt sort out camping tickets...anyway...alexisonfire were staying in the same place and we ended up hanging out and gettin pissed with them.....i got really drunk and said something stupid on the phone to my girlfriend who was at the campsite...i still to this day don't know what i said but i knew it was stupid...anyway...i was all...'oh shit what have i done'...to the guitarist...and he said he would sort me out. anyway...the next day on stage, halfway through the set he did a shout out and was like...'michael says he's really sorry for what he said...he didn't mean it...and really likes you...etc etc.' which was quite cool. but she wasn't watching. we broke up soon after.
they dedicated a song to me for my birthday, and afterwards rory (the one from test icicles) tried to get a girl i used to like to go out with me :)
on the same plane as A Sunny Day in Glasgow.
my parents were good friends with John Cage!
and Jens Lekman replies to my emails :)
He's so wonderfully lovely and wry, that accent...mmm!
I gave them my haribo.
My ex once stewared at Reading and met a wasted Pete Doherty who wanted to know where his tourbus was (she told him it was the big thing with wheels behind him) and dave Grohl, who said "Hello ladies!" then had to ignore her and her friends because they just collapsed with nervous giggles.
My friend Rob nearly got into a fight the other night with one of Los Campesinos!.
My best friend's cousin's friend is the bass-player in Ash.
I went to school with The Automatic and still occasionally play pool with them in the local pub.
My favourite: I was in cardiff HMV waiting for my friend to pay at the till when I saw a really weirdly dressed guy ahead of him. I stared at him trying to work out who he was and why I recognised him, then he turned around and I realised it was Ian Watkins out of Lostprophets. He noticed me staring at him and we did a weird nod of acknowledgemnt at each other, then he got mobbed by emo girls on the escaltor.
These stories are all so lame, and I cherish them all.
They accidentally walked into each other a gig then gave each other evils, looking like it was going to kick off. Then Dananananaykroyd came on and evryone's attention was immediately diverted elsewhere.
THAT TOTALLY SOUNDS LIKE NEARLY A FIGHT!!
Dylan Carlson doesn't smile.
Don Henley. Don "The Eagles" Henley.
He was really nice though. I met a beach boy once too. Nothing really best-of-mates close though.
Sat next to her in Maths one year. Cunt.
seeing the mentions of encounters with flava flav, I met him in Nottingham at a PE gig, chatted to him before he headed backstage with a big bucket of KFC!
As for other bands, i'm good friends with bromheads jacket, couple of years back they got me backstage with them as they had heard i'd just come out of hospital and wanted to check I was ok. And The Draytones are good friends too, at get loaded in the park the other month one of the band (Luke or Alex, my memory is shite) spotted me walking from a tent and shouted and came over to say hello. We Start Fires sent me a christmas card a few years back, Oh and I got to hang out in The Buzzcocks backstage last time I went to see them ( my friend is a taxi driver, and knows the bassist, has given him taxi journies from gigs back home in the past)
i bumped into him too, didnt really chat though.
i've got quite a few mediocre/boring ones..but one really nice story..
last glastonbury it was one of my best friend's birthday on the sunday and we got shitfaced on slow gin and brothers (with the sickly strawberry shot in) then went to see adem. i'm not fussed about adem but he is my friend's absolute favourite person in the world. we saw his set then near the end (before the last song) we started yelling at him to say happy birthday to my friend..
he didn't then he went off stage..despite our continued yelling at him (must have been proper annoying)
just as we turned to leave he came running out from backstage with a handbell from his set, caught up with us and gave this bell to her, before chatting with us for ages. still not fussed about his music but he's a totally amazing guy :D
i kinda despised her and so immediately struck out any love for his music
a year later and it's one of my favourite records, if only i didn't hate that yank and jens would have been a friend!
met new young pony club at debaser stockholm and told the manager there to book Foals (in 2006), still not sure whether they did get out there, the ukrainian bassist gave me his beer tokens as he only drank cocktails, happy days!
met yannis and jack at leicester's charlotte, nice guys, shame the sound at the charlotte is a balls ache
jofo gave me a poster at sumo in leics too
peanut from kaisers poured me a pint at the three days of Cribsmas at Brudenell Social Club, awesome gig!
stalked Leon from Fanfarlo accidentally on the Camden Crawl as I had previously chatted to him at their gig in Sweden too and made reference to it in the second convo
my housemate's mum is john bonhams first cousin.
my cousin plays drums for jeremy warmsley so i've met him, unsurprisingly
neither is very exiting really.
you've scored highly in cool points already
first i find out you play the trombone, now this
used to live upstairs at my parents house.
Matt has told me before that i'm the only trombone player he knows.
he was wrong.
back just before Pablo Honey was released and they played The Loop in Cardiff (which became the Emporium nightclub)
Also used to be mates with Rob from Supergrass in Uni
earlier this year - wicked guys. honestly hella gentle and kind....see them round Brighton all the time and stop for nice chats. My band also rehearses in the same place as them and a few other wicked bands...
Andy Wicket (co wrote girls on film - duran duran) borrowed my bass cab
Fuzz Townsend, drummer PWEI, used to be mate
Kevin (yeah yeah no) used to be slight mate
Siobahn Fahey (Bananarama/shakespeares sister) told me to piss off.
Met 'Slade the Leveller' or Justin from New Model Army a few times
Had splif and sound check with General Saint (General Saint and Clint Eastwood) sound check was for a whole flock of rastablastas that i was setting up for people to record a concert of theirs
I'm not sure that this is true though, also is he a musician?
Pal from Turbonegro
some fella from Grandaddy whose name I forget
Van Dyke Parks
after he invited an audience member up on stage at the astoria he gave me a hug after my song. that's pretty close.
was a big hippy in Toronto in the 60s. She met the Beatles and dated Rick James when he played with Neil Young's band. Apparently she was with him the very first time he did coke.
although as this was a dream, I'm not sure it counts.
Oh wait, you said 'notable'...
lauren laverne & other female members of kenicke (johnny x was too busy being moody)
..they were good but Johnny x wasn't allowed to talk to anyone on that tour because he was 'revising for his exams' apparently.
as he was doing his degree (sociology, I think) when the band took off and they had to get replacements for a couple of tours.
Can't hold a candle to some of you, but I've got an personal email from Fyfe Dangerfield from the Guillemots, been commended on my badge collection by Brendan from Broken Social Scene and that lady from the Concretes and had my nose tweaked by LSF's Tim Harrington. I've also spoken to most members of the Arcade Fire at some point over the last two years. Oh, and my mum was asked out by Rod Stewart and the bassist from Hot Chocolate in the early 70's, and Shakin' Stevens (probably pushing the definition of 'notable' here) is a regular at my dad's restaurant.
Captain Sensible when my old band supported the Damned in 2002 (really nice bloke)
Sophie Ellis Bextor at a club/private party - she's also very nice (and extremely hott)
Kevin Rowland at a night in the Soho Revue Bar
and probably some others that i can't really remember.
anyone remember Gene? I've met Steve Mason (guitarist) and Matt 'the Hat' (drums) numerous times (I'm not a superfan or anything, they're just old friends of my band's manager)
once upon a time.
And Serge from Kasabian stood on my foot waiting to be served at a bar.
As part of the end of year blog stuff last year I emailed and Myspaced pretty much everyone whose music I'd liked over the year to ask for their favourite album of 2007. One of those I sent a request to, more in hope than confidence, was Les Savy Fav, but Syd Butler responded (Band Of Horses, I think), which was great enough.
About a week and a half later I'm scanning my unread emails and thinking about how "they're all spam again and I need a proper filter, oh look, that one there claims to be from Tim Harringt...hang on a minute..." and indeed Syd had forwarded it to Tim and he'd gone through to the blog to find the email address for a personal response. (His nomination? Let's Stay Friends. I kind of thought I should have reworded the original request at that point.)
Colin Newman of Wire emailed me to commend a piece I'd written about them.
in les savy fav!
at a party.
Reni from the Stone Roses knows my name - he is a regular in a restaurant I used to work at in Manchester. He bought my gf a present when she left, not me though...
..and he was really nice but he had a massive string of dribble hanging off his chin.
DJed his daughter's birthday party.
(John Virgo & Bobby Davro were there too)
my sister slept with Mani and once kidnapped Ian Brown after a gig and took him to the Leadmill and then stayed chatting with him and Goldfinger in his hotel room
My Dad spent four months travelling with Eddie Grant way back when.
My Mum danced with George Michael at a party in the 80's; she also got a wink and a wave from Robbie Williams in a car park.
But as none of those are me, I'll try my best to match:
I spoke with him for about three minutes - he was off his tits, then he proceeded to run away in a park in Manchester Centre with a can of stella to 'write the setlist' - he was a massive penis. I met Museon the showbiz tour - and they were the soundest guys. I know it isnt very rock and roll, but i went to a Travis aftershow party back when they were good, and Fran Healey is the nicest man i have ever met - fact.
Stuart Cable - he wasnt very talented, but was a nice chap. Kelly Jones however was an undeniable twat.
I had a chat with We Are Scientists outside their Brixton gig, got let onto their tourbus and ended up headbutting the bassist in the chin, splitting his lip.
Justin Hawkins was my neighbour for about two years.
I called the guitarist in White Rose Movement 'sir' once.
I had dinner with Dave Grohl once.
who was also in sunna, and the other guitarist from sunna.
and i used to work with the bass player from sixnationstate and one of the guitarists from pete and the pirates.
i also knocked one off over a picture britney spears.
we played a badly organised one day festival and i spoke to a couple of members of Six Nation State before we went onstage. i can't remember if they complimented our music afterwards. i hope so but i have no idea haha
to Daedelus on Friday and he said he was disapointed with how "indie-sentric" much of the music scene was in the UK.
Literally. I walked right into the bloke in a Brighton street corner (no, he wasn't asking for loose change), and I apologised to him for not looking where I was going.
I've hung out with 1990s twice, I had a great drunken conversation with Rhys from Good Shoes, I've stood and watched Arctic Monkeys beside We Are Scientists, I've walked past Fred Durst in New York.
Thats right, THE Fred Durst.
incredibly nice guy. He is an MC. and he tells me he has a lot of guitar pedals.
i might as well contribute a few.
i've met noel gallagher and he was really nice. dave grohl - ditto but multiply 'nice' by 1000000. roger daltrey - really really small. and i've slept in gareth from los campesinos' bed. no, he wasn't in it! (hee, thanks gareth!)
did si say anything about what the fuck is happening with Verve at the mo, or are they really 'just having a rest'???
i think you actually meant to ask that question of wrightylew, above.
after I gave her some toilet roll before a gig.
Also bumped into Reggie at Wireless and half of Cold War Kids outside Chalk Farm Station.
Actually, I'm doubting how relevant these "bumped into" posts are to this thread..
I bought Phil from SSLYBY an ice cream
used to be a club singer (and indeed had a couple 'hits'). Anyway, yeah, I've got merry with him.
dated the lead singer of the undertones.. while they were writing teenage kicks. it may be about her...
And yes it is about Wanking.
My girlfriends Dad got the train to Stockport with Jimi Hendrix after having been introduced to him on a night out in Manchester. He has a photo. Apparently Hendrix had literally the biggest hands ever!
good for guitar playing.
I met James Mercer of the Shins last year, he was dead nice, I was starstruck.
thats all though.
i danced to a suede song with russell senior of pulp, at a britpop night.
...at pool. Twice.
is my cousin (by marriage). He was, sadly, of no help with my theology'n'music dissertation.
Back in the glory days at Waitrose I used to sell organic cheese to Jonny Greenwood.
which was really nice of them!
next to John Peel. That wasa little intimidating.
and in a similar style i've dj'ed at gigs of Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Example, The Holloways, Bombay Bicycle Club, Vincent Vincent & The Villains, Slow Club and The Teenagers. The Venue the gigs were at was run by a friend so used to get me to dj them. It's closed now.
Used to live with Eric Bell and be bezzie mates with Phil Lynott and the rest of Thin Lizzy back in the day, around Belsize Park way.... He saw Hendrix rehearsing in All Saints church one time.
Personally, I had a piss next to the singer from Archie Bronson Outfit, am friendly with Duke Spirit and went to uni with the Hoosiers.
I also met Bobby G (Bob Geldoff to you) when I used to work in a cinema and served Kings Of Leon some clothes in my old job - and they stuck me on the guest list for Astoria (nice guys).
I also served Kiera Knightley - who needs musicians when you got her???
I also served Keira Knightley - who needs musicians when you got her???
once poked my left breast with his knee, and the next time i saw him we hugged. we're getting married soon.
That reminds me, I had beers with him and Keith from We Are Scientists and the Luminaire... I gotta get going on me autobiography.
...I had a couple of drinks with Andy Cairns from Therapy? once (one of my friends briefly drummed for Dog Toffee and got to know him through a support slot).
And I once stayed in the old house of Katie from Forward Russia who she also shared with one of the guitarists from Shut Your Eyes and You'll Burst Into Flames.
I've randomly met a few people in my time too such as Gerard and Mikey Way in Big Hands in Manchester but I don't think that really counts...
nick caves son last week.
I live in Harlow and they pretty much came from here. Billy would always be wasted at the Hertford Marquee (nearish Harlow) and when i worked there temporarily he'd always be in the VIP area and we couldn't say shit cos he was Billy Subway... Also spoke to Foals, I Was A Cubscout, Amusment Parks On Fire to see if it was ok to photograph them on stage.
Thats about it...
is the small vacuum behind the black curtain next to the pool table.
is sitting on my garden wall as we speak!!!i guess only kissinginkansas will know where i live
...also massive fail on my triple posting :S The new DiS doesn't work very well on work's computers :|
with Finley Quaye. And also, once Neil Hannon drove a radio controlled car into my foot, and glared at me as if it was my fault. True story.
I went out to the Swiss Alps to cover him doing a gig in a hot air balloon as a bit of a stunt for Virgin Radio/Virgin Balloons.
A load of journalists, radio people and general hangers-on went sledging the next day and after a rather embarrasing wipe-out I then looked up to see a giant ball of ginger dreadlocks coming down a snowy hill straight for me, feet first. Needless to say one of his massive snow boots connected with my eye and I ended up walking around for a week with an impressive shiner.
I also once interviewed Starsailor the week the NME went mental over them at the height of the New Acoustic Movement (shudder). I asked James Stelfox, the bass player, why he thought the NME had gone nuts over them. He admitted he had no idea. Me neither. Nice guy though.
I once saw Slade guitarist Dave Hill (a proper musical legend) having a cup of tea and a piece of cake in a garden centre near Wolverhampton. He was also reading a book about house plants. He looked a very content man.
but i shook hands with both Geoff Travis and Andrew Loog Oldham yesterday. geek boy got excited!
