Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Reckoning [Edit] [Delete] 18 replies 18:10, 1 October '08

What's the consensus on here regarding these fellas? I've never been massively into them but i do like them some of their stuff, from all the albums probably, although having seen them at Roskilde last year i wouldn't pay to go to one of their gigs. Live, the clearly take self-indulgence to a new level. I would, however, pay to see a Frusciante solo show, the guy's a genius guitar player and provides some pretty lovely harmonies.

Despite the average show i witnessed, when the intro to 'Can't Stop' started, i did think, 'that's very good'.

So, RHCP. Yay or No?

  • I quite like the songs I quite like of theirs

and can't stand the ones I can't stand of theirs, if that makes sense.

They're of a band where I could probably make a 10-12 track compilation I'd enjoy but I'm not massively enthusiastic.

  • the consensus here is

"UHHHHHHHHHHH RHCP NO WAY MAN. STUPID WHITE MEN PLAYING FUNK MUSIC NO WAY MAN"

Whilst they completely ignore the fact that frusciante is a genius and that blood suger sex magic is one of the best albums EVA. Plus all their new stuff bar the newest album is great. And they're brlliant and a million times more "fun" than all these "fun" bands that people go on about on here. And have probably done more drugs and fucked more people and just generally been cooler.

    • Reading Kiedis' autobiography would def confirm this last sentence...

How he's still alive is beyond me...

      Reckoning @yes_ | 1 Oct '08, 18:15 | X
    • They still need to get Dave Navarro back

      that guy man. That guy.

I bought 'Wrong' by Nomeansno and it has this terrible song called 'Big Dick' that sounds just like a tighter version of old Red Hot Chili Peppers. There's rapping and everything. It is ruining this otherwise excellent album for me.

  • They're a band you don't 'Decide to like'

so they're not veh popular on here

saying that I don't care for much post BSSM, except for maybe that Dani California one.

  • they are ok

in small doeses. I quite like some of it and am massivly indifrent to the rest of it.

    jimitheexploder | 1 Oct '08, 18:18 | X
  • I like

Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Californication and By The Way (the albums that is) - Stadium Arcadium had one or two good songs, but they were adrift in a sea of not very good ones.

      • YEAH MAN

You know what I hate? Mediocrity. Mediocre stuff is even worse than shit stuff. I'm pretty passionate about music so when a band makes something that doesn't even have the good grace to not be obviously terrible I just can't handle it. I'm all like "BLAND BLAND BLAND, back to jo whiley for you". I hate mediocre stuff even more than bad stuff. At least bad stuff's bad, mediocre stuff is SHIT.

        yes_ @the_outdoor_typo | 1 Oct '08, 19:42 | X
        • no, they're way below mediocre

seen plenty of mediocre bands, don't hate any of them... chilis are just vile though. stop grunting, you twat.

          the_outdoor_typo @yes_ | 1 Oct '08, 19:46 | X
  • Superb band, a definite "Yay!"

They've written some great songs and, admittedly, some pretty band ones. But what band hasn't?

They're one of the best bands of their generation.

    FizzyBovril | 1 Oct '08, 18:51 | X
    • by the way

is a really good album. as is BSSM obv.

I also think kiedis is too harshly derided for his lyrics, scar tissue gave me a lot more respect for him in that department.

  • Don't judge them on that Roskilde gig

They were a bit rubbish there. They, admittedly, also were at Leeds.
But at their own gig, they were ace.
I get the impression they're not that arsed about festivals, at least in terms of crafting 'casual'-friendly sets. They fill it out with jams, which are fine if it's their gig, it's to be expected. But at a festival, they need to appeal to more than the already converted.

  • My God!

I was expecting a million replies like the_outdoor_typo's, but this thread is being suprisingly charitable to them.

The Chili Peppers (one 'L') were the first band I really loved, BSSM got me into music and even though I don't really listen to them much any more, you can definatley count me as a 'Yay'.

  • I liked them a lot when By The Way came out.

I wouldn't ever put them on now, but if I accidentally hear some of their old songs I know I generally like them in a nostalgic way. The song Californication is pretty classic.

      • Have loved them for years

saw them on the Blood, Sugar, sex, Magic tour at Brixton which I reckon is one of the best gigs I've ever been to
