Recieved this on promo - anyone else heard it? It sounds really good so far, really atmospheric production. Epicish.
I've only heard it once and don't want to give an in-depth opinion on it bar the fact that, much as I love Mercury Rev and am looking forward to relistening to this album it has the most horrific twee, sickly and unpaltable song titles of any album I've ever encountered in my life.
'Runaway Raindrop' and 'Dream Of A Young Girl As A Flower'? Actually, yeah, now you mention it..
My interest was piqued by the five star review in The Guardian, so I had a listen.
And it is really dreadful. A completely pointless drift of tuneless whimsy which can only make sense if you are out of your head on dope or something else to mellow you out.
It's astonishing how far this band have fallen from even a few years ago.
the ethereal/electronic/ambient, or whatever you want to call it sound really appeals to me. I was somebody who thought treefingers was one of the best tracks on Kid A. 'October Sunshine' is pretty similar to that.
but am really struggling to get into this album at all. As someone said above it does just seem to pointlessly drift. I hope it'll be a grower but it seems a bit shit so far. Dissapointing as they can be so so good!
the strange attractor "companion" album aswell then... it's more of the same, without any vocals.
i still find this a really really really poor and dissapointing album. Absolutley nothing grabs you. Makes 'The Secret Migration' see good.
I've only listened once, but I can't say it grabbed me. Because it's Mercury Rev, I'll give it another go - maybe I was just too excited and built it up too high? Or maybe it's just another album that sounds nice enough while it's playing, but afterwards you can't remember any of it. Only time, and a few more listens, will tell...
