(that I like the most I must say) but the older things are sludgey no? to me they were not full on doomey droney whatnots but further up that road.
I think many of those are contradictions in terms! I hear a slight shift in their sound that I do like but its all subjective i guess!
We can surely agree that they are Crushingly loud right? My head is still ringing and this is day 5 post gig!
to sleep now, a happy man.
pop/hardcore/arsemetal! But they are very good yes. Hydrahead is putting out some good stuff this year. I dunno about these guys yet but they seem ok
They can keep putting out things that sound vaguely like Karp and I will be happy.
It's that lovely grinding Jesus Lizard bass thing. MMMM
they made pelican sound a bit weak tonight i thought as well. and really quiet.
in New York in 2006 supporting Mogwai. They were terrible. People were looking at each other and trying to find out if it was a joke. I guess it was just a bad day at the office
is truly astounding. The first half is merely extremely good.
supporting Pelican the other day, have to say was expecting more than deafening de-tuned rumble. Couldn't hear the vocals. Must have been a bad day, Pelican were far superior.
I don't think Pelican were even that bad - just in comparison they came off looking a bit shoddy.
It's a bit like finding a £5 note on the floor ten minutes after you've found a £50 note. It's still good but it doesn't feel as great.
First time I've heard them and I was expecting to blown away considering all the hype but wasn't. I preferred the latter third of the set for sure, but the rest was a bit too samey. Plus I spent the whole first two thirds thinking of how they reminded me so much of Milligram. Plus could barely make out the vocals.
Pelican on the other hand I thought were much better. Yes the guitars seemed quiet but the drums were so punchy and they were really tight. Was particularly happy when they played The Woods as it's my favourite track of theirs and the first time I've seen them play it, and ending on Last Day Of Winter... sounded soooo good.
I'm going to give Torche another listen though.
supported by These Arms Are Snakes last summer and TAAS made Pelican look weak in comparison on that occasion too. Maybe it's because Pelican aren't actually that good and possibly even boring live? Just a thought.
And to be fair, very little lives up to These Arms Are Snakes live.
some of my opinion is down to pure personal preference - I went last night to see Torche rather than Pelican, who've never quite blown me away.
They really are!
find the vocals a little irritating?
I have only listened to Meanderthal a couple of times as I wasn't keen on the vox.
can see the problem though. But I think the waves of heavy guitar make up for it.
You in London yet?
I was listening to Satori last night, made me think "what's simon up to right now?"
and not been to anywhere near enough gigs since being back. How about you?
You should let me know what you're up to and we'll meet up.
Hope you've been loving Satori as much as I do!
and saw the free Deerhunter show at Rough trade. Erm, Rolo Tomassi are playing for free at Old Blue Last on Monday, wanna come?
Sic Alps are playing soon at Barden's too, Tom's been playing me their stuff and I really wanna go...
Just getting home from Shoreditch which is a bit of an arse.
Will let you know, but would be good to make it along.
Pelican or me slipping over on someone's spilt drink.
Torche made up for it though! SICK!
I want a word with that house soundman, he sucks! Torche's sound was terrible but as a band they were fucking ace to watch. Real entertaining with awesome tunes. "GRREEEENNNADDDES"
I AAMMMMM YOURRRRR ARMOURRRRRR!!!!!!
I loved them, I'd never heard them before. They made Pelican feel anticlimatic, that gig was in the right order. I think more girls would like them! There were only about 10 there.
girls running around in Torche T-shirts in Sheffield. Which makes me a happy boy.
They really need to fire their sound guy, the sound was awful at the Corporation and judging by the comments above it was everywhere else. It's a testament to how awesome they are that they still rocked like motherfuckers. And I love that one of the guitarists looks like a Hispanic version of Dave Grohl circa 1991.
gigs is shit. He's ruined all the bands ive ever seen there. He had the sound way too loud, then because he'd buggered up the soundcgheck he couldnt turn the bas down or get tthe vocals louder. The singer kept wincing when the mic feededback. This is basic sound engineer stuff.
Pelican had their own soundman so they sounded ace. Im off to ATP too. It's gonna be ace.
but I prefer Floor because they were more epic.
I think they're OK. They're great in theory, but I just don't think their songwriting is all that. I found a lot of Meanderthal a bit annoying.
I very much hope seeing them live at ATP will change my mind.
and while I thought they were fantastic, I disagree with most of you above, thought Pelican outshone them.
Must just be my taste though.
Saying that the Torche guitarist did fair enjoy himself and did a wee tour round the crowd making lots of noise. Was a good loud finish.
Meanderthal is 'mazin.
despite their guitars being next to untunable in the sweat-pit that is the Engine Rooms, Brighton. Couldn't hear the vocals, general shocking live sound quality but they were still jaw-droppingly good, the 'bomb song' in particular re-arranged all my internal organs.
I was expecting Pelican to be good but they were one-dimensionally dull with almost no sense of dynamics, which was really disappointing.
...anyway, what is the Torche guitar tuning? How low does that bomb song go?
