the greatest band of all time. discuss
they sound pretty good but none of their songs really mean anything
what sense? they're not about great lyrical truths, they're about pushing musical boundaries, pushing the limits of what guitar music can achieve
with a few exceptions it they just seem to be thurston and his rhyming dictionary
where you're coming from, defo. but to me, just pure sound sometimes is more meaningful than lyrical themes or insight or anything like that. and some of their lyrics, particularly ranaldo's, are brilliant anyway
but I dont think they are even that musically innovative either, they just made the sound of their scene more accessible, it pains me to say this it took me along time to come to terms with the fact I may not like sonic youth
enough. you made the effort anyway. it took me a while to really appreciate them. i think a lot of people maybe are put off at first and don't persevere, i'm glad i did though. but anyway, this band, to me personally, personify everything that is great and vital and majestic about music, i can't praise them enough..whenever i get disillusioned about music i stick one of their records on and it's all good. anyone who does that for you? genuine question
different ones fulfill different moods, but maybe the microphones most of the time recently
points for obscurity
and lets it feedback on itself to create new wave forms?
you do know jason lee is a scientologist
not a full blown scientologist
i heard all the cast of my name is earl are all scientologists
I was thinking of beck
i've no problem with muslims, but you know as well as i that scientologists are complete and utter gimps. i used to love jason lee as well
yes. if you're not going to agree with me who is?
But not the greatest
of 'schizophrenia'. just listen to it! i stake my claim on the first minute of schizophrenia
i stake my claim on the first minute of schizophrenia
yeah. Oooo might put some on now actually...
and washing machine wouldn't be my favourite youth albums, but they have their moments
sonic nurse and rather ripped are two of their best
Rather Ripped is awesome.
any of them as yet. thinking about buying no. 8, got a good review on pitchfork. as for sonic nurse, just watch this:
as the 80s ones, surely?
they r horribly compromises
and pink steam = transcendence
they're really appealing and i'm not completely sure why.
they are the greatest band of all time. Their massive back catalogue (inc. side/solo projects, SYR, rare sessions) means there will always be new stuff by them to discover (unless they do the unthinkable and break up).
Although at the moment they havnt had as much of a consistent weekly listen in the past few months as they have had in the past but they are one of those bands that can do that and fall in love with again.
Maybe as i get older this status will change but they will always be a very important group to me, i reckon.
although I haven't heard any of the later stuff outside of the snippets on the dvd. Have you seen the dvd?
I'm still not really feeling Sonic Youth and lord knows i've tried Jesus lord I have. They've done some good stuff but there is such a mountain of crap that sits alongside it that you could never call them the greatest band ever.
man aH NONAHNOAHNO
is music i could never dream of making, it's incredible, & the lyrics often complement the sounds really well.
... Sonic Youth beyond words. Dipping into their back catalogue is always so satisfying. They are such a surprising, inventive band. As I think someone else mentioned, the sonic patterns and textures they can get out of their guitars are completely unique. See Daydream Nation for the ultimate evidence of this.
Am currently listening to the Goo 8 track demos. A lot rougher and more direct than the finished thing. Highly recommended.
i marry you?
The second disc, yeah. I'm pretty sure there isn't the break between Mary-Christ and the start of Kool Thing (which always annoyed the hell out of me on the original album).
with the greats. i'm a huge fan, but the greatest is a bit steep. surely that mantle goes to U2!? haha.
but i aint gonna start putting them up with the greats! Personally i think thay are beyond that! There in there own league!
But ive got tobe honest i thought rather ribbed was a poor record!
Give me some washing machine anyday
They've also released some utterly turgid crap too. Here ends this revelatory post.
I can see that I was wrong and you were right
but don't run down my thread man i'm just tryin to spread the love
Sorry. Ok, I tihnk these are really amazing records:
- Daydream Nation
- Bad Moon Rising
- Confusion Is Sex
I won't go into the ones I think are bobbins, lets stay positive!
goo was pretty shit in fairness
washing machine is rubbish, apart from the diamond sea.
I've really tried to like them just cos so many people go on about them. I just don't get it.
But the very notion of 'the greatest band of all time' is pretty ridiculous.
P.S. It's Autechre
it's all subjective and everything.. but it's just about getting people discussing music innit?
Daydream Nation on the other hand is pretty awesome. Such a good noise!
Seriously jesus christ!
I've ordered that online and every day that the postman turns up without it is like a physical ache to me.
of all time. thurston moore is my hero.
