Shes Leaving Home by the Beatles
would be amusing
we all
stand together by Paul McCartney and the Frog Chorus
Where Do You Go To My Lovely by Peter Sarstedt
Piano Man by Billy Joel (sort of)
we all stand together!
that would be amazing....
I will try but have a feeling i might be vetoed....
the sarstedt suggestion
is top notch
Waltz
There's Elliott Smith - Waltz#2 on XO. Or Calexico - Sunken Waltz. Both lovely.
oops. didn't read..
Something kinda retro and well-known...
Plus, the line
"I'm never gonna know you know, but I'm gonna love you anyhow..." might not go down too well at a wedding...
it's got
"love" in it! i had elliott smiths cover of thirteen by big star as our first dance
i'm no musicologist
but apparently 'suspicious minds' is in waltz time. and is brilliant. maybe not the most lyrically appropriate...
not the version i know
ie the one that did well in the charts a couple of years ago
hmm, that's what i thought
but it's by far the best thing on this list what the internet told me:
http://www.blacktieevents.com.au/Music/waltzs_dances.htm
this is weird
im sure that most of those are in 4/4
unchained melody wins i think tho, even if i'd call irt more 6/8
The Beach Boys
Friends
probably some eric clapton???
please not 'wonderful tonight'
it's like a date rapist's anthem
i think that's the sort of thing i was thinking of
but i was just assuming that anything slow as a waltz, which it obvz isnt
hmmm.
possibly not Eric Clapton I think no dis-respect to the chap's fans....
S'difficult...
keep them coming!
much appreciated!
x
"a date rapist's anthem"
just made me crack up
hmmm
3/4 pop songs...
there really aren't that many...
And there really aren't that many good ones...
And there really aren't that many ones suitable for a first dance..
Who requests 'waltz time' for a first dance song, anyway? most of the wedding's I've been to, it's been bride and groom snogging in the middle of dancefloor shuffling their feet to 'Angels'.
QotSA
sky is falling would be sweeeeeeeet.
having said that
this might help you

Three Times A Lady! it's gotta be done.
although, being a pedant
half of those on that list are in 6-8 time. Which is actually compound 2 time. So a waltz, it is not.
but
you can waltz to a song in 6/8.
can you?
how?
anyway, that link says What The World Needs Now Is Love, which im pretty sure wins
You are a
genius. I am getting married in 16 days and was thinking of replacing my first dance wedding song on the basis that its 4/4 (God Only Knows by the Beach Boys) on the basis that when we practiced it the other night we looked like total knobs shuffling about like we got no rhythm - but I couldn't think of anything else.
What the World Needs Now is Love ia a frickin genius suggestion though! If I knew who you were I would buy you a pint or two.
your enthusiasm is worth more than two pints :)

Bollox
My Bird has veto'd it on account of it appearing in some cheesy movie about weddings and stuff. Back to the board...
YES
that is a great suggestion.
And no, you can't write a waltz song in 6/8. By definition, a waltz needs 3 strong beats to every bar. 6/8 only has two (think about 'How Can You Mend A Broken Heart' or 'She Wore Blue Velvet' or 'Unchained Melody')
id call blue velvet 12/8
myself. 4 beats imo
accent on
1 and 4...as in, ONE two three, FOUR five six....you got yourself a waltzing motion right there.
yes, that is what 6/8 is
but a waltz has three strong beats to it, not two
It's Oh So Quiet
as latterly covered by Bjork.
A nice gentle start and then a fun bit about love.
the fun bit isnt a waltz tho is it?
this is true
I'd be interested in hearing a version adapted to be entirely 3/4 though. Might be sweet, very lounge act.
Moon River
or if they're children of the seventies and prone to such borderline cheese, Three Times A Lady, are the best options from Wiki.
properly good waltz pop:

but no, not an Oldie
earth angel
.... you know, it's in back to the future.

To the person who said 'Suspicious Minds' - find out what waltz time means.
if you think
Earth Angel is a waltz, you too need to find the correct definition!
Stop your nonsense..
I believe the request was for a song in 'waltz-time':
A waltz, or valse from the German term, is a piece of music in triple meter, most often 3/4 but sometimes 3/8 or 6/8.
I'll think you'll find Earth Angel is in 6/8.
I'm a Music teacher.
You are a fool.
the cure's
"six different ways" (from the Head on the Door album) is 6/8 time and it's kinda retro. As for well-known, well I'll leave that up for you to decide...
Just do Money by Pink Floyd.
It's in cazy 7/8 time so evryone would fall over in an amusing fashion.
Inspiral Carpets - Biggest Mountain
is
can't help falling in love in 3/4?
that could work...
was on someone's wedding list they suggested up theresomewhere...
D
yes
as in elvis? wiiiiiiiiiiise meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay only fooooooooooools ruuuuuuuuuuush iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin?
yeah
Golden Brown by the Stranglers
or if you want a song that's NOT about heroin, the old Cliff hit Girl In Your Arms should press all the right buttons, is dead easy to play, you can get quite a satisfying Duane-Eddy tinged guitar solo to it and the words are all mushy and appropriate which shoudl ensure you go down well.
Could I change that
Having read the whole thread - What The World Needs Now is the ONLY possible candidate !
