Mellon Collie

OceanStorm [Edit] [Delete] 22 replies 12:05, 28 August '05
Finally got it (£4 inc postage on ebay!), and gave it some quality listening time last night. At the moment it seems to me like Disc 1 has some stunners (how fecking great is Zero!), some good stuff and some filler (erm, Cupid de Locke anyone?!).

Disc 2 is just awesome though, not a weak link and some absolutely beautiful stuff. 1979 was already one of my favourite songs ever but Thirty Three, Beautiful and By Starlight among others are all gorgeous, and the heavy stuff is great too (Bodies, XYU etc).

Seems to me like this is a much more extreme album than Siamese Dream - it contains both their most violent work and their prettiest. Corgan's lyrics are sometimes a bit angst-by-numbers but he more than makes up for it with possibly the greatest lyric ever written (1979). His voice veers from insanely whiny to lovely but somehow it's all part of the charm of the album. It feels very much like a late-teenage album and maybe that's part of why I love it.

Anyway, great stuff and I prefer it to Siamese Dream already.

It is a banging album, and I agree that it represents the extremes of their ability more than Siamese Dream, but cmon, SD has some corkers on too!

Yeah SD does have some great tracks but this album connects to me better.

And the 1979 video is the coolest thing ever!

          'connects to em better'?

I agree. Think it's criminally underrated. Though Rat In A Cage is terrible.

I think Siamese Dream was their high point. I loved Mellon Collie at the time but not so much now, apart from the metal stuff on disc two and 'Muzzle' - a really amazing song.

Yeah, Siamese Dream is my favourite at the moment. I think Corgans slower paced stuff far exceed the metal songs.

I can not stand it. Well, i like a couple of songs but just find it ridiculously dull. So overrated. Both band and album.

      OVERRATED!

i would never argue that. there are (in the midsts of greatness) tiny flashes of weaknesses, but i wouldnt say its dull...

      • Re: Mellon Collie

Dull dull dull dull dull. *Shrugs*. Never been a fan. It is boring though. Christ. Don't mind some of Siamese Dreams but still. I hope they don't get back together. Well, i hope people i know don't suddenly remember them and feel the need to play them constantly. Bald twat.

          • Re: Mellon Collie

I think the problem with Mellon Collie was that Billy decided in advance that he was going to do a double album, and then had to fill it - it wasn't like he suddenly realised he had 2 hours of music. So I think some of the tracks on MC&IS are quite underwritten, whereas all the tracks on Siamese Dream are as good as they could possibly be.
