Any good then? How does it match up to their earlier stuff?
what? im not sure about that.
but if i may make a predictable comment on the album, its good, in parts, 'Im jim morrison im dead' is brilliant, i think its one of my favourite mogwai songs actually. but the rest of the album is fairly 'meh'. its just mogwai by numbers. they reached their peak and i dont think they will ever produce something as wonderful as cody or happy songs (i know alot of people dont rate the latter but i certainly do) again.
i would like and be very interested to hear what other people think.
I wouldnt know, as it hasnt yet been released.
you pretty much summed up my thoughts on the album too. happy songs is class to & their best more recent album.
and it would have made me cringe even if it was a proper haiku
Like Vian said, it is very good in places, but a bit flat in others. I don't really see where else they can go as a band without overhauling their sound.
Here's another review if anyone interested - http://thesilentballet.com/dnn/Home/tabid/36/ctl/Details/mid/384/ItemID/1746/Default.aspx
I'm really enjoying it, took a few listens to get to grips with the album. But as usual over repeated listens the majesty of Mogwai unfurls itself.
A bit too early doors to be talking about where this ranks in Mogwai's history- what is for sure is that the Hawk is Howling is a worthy addition to the 'gwai cannon
not on this record - on the whole mogwai back catalogue.
i love them but the drum beats seem to plod a bit/are a bit samey.
this is probably me being a loon
I sort of agree a bit.
If they had the drummer from Explosions, say, I'd like them more.
like military-style snare rolls over and over again?
and I think it's great. Kinda like a souped up and extended Mr Beast (similar styles, although more instrument based i think, but longer tracks), the tracks breathe really nicely.
Scotland's Shame and Daphne and the Brain are both favourites at the moment, but I think Blow up your school will be awesome live.
http://sleepwalkcapsules.blogspot.com and I think it is okay, but no where near a patch on their earlier, more vigorious albums. Competent, but safe - I want an album like Zidane.
like Zidane too.
