A FUCKING SUPRISE
The enemy of riffs.
"Their first four records were classic permutations of 1980s thrash"
I cannot disagree with anything in that review.
we had this thread earlier. but anyway, who gives a shit about what pitchfork (or indeed any critics) think. I'll reserve judgement until i hear it. and besides every other review i've read said it was awesome.
they heap praise on the first four albums and have a series of valid criticisms. its easy to roll your eyes and say "oh i guess dem stupid hipsters hate metal BIG SURPRISE", but its not the case. I swear people on DiS just read the score at the top of pitchfork reviews and say "oh gee, what a surprise they hate something good/like something shit, stupid ironic hipsters!"
Pitchfork reviewer* for a start
And the stuff about praising the first four albums too
metallica are death magnetic that's what they've created - in their words, it's the best album that the current metallica could have made.
I haven't listened yet. Maybe I shouldn't be commenting on this article
it's quite good. nothing spectacular or original.
If instead of going off and making albums like the black album or the loads Metallica had gone the Motorhead route of releasing essentially the same album every two years this is the record they would have been making since about 1990.
Reminiscent of the old stuff but lacking a certain magic.
probably felt the current Metallica can at best make an average album. Or they just don't think the album is that great! Not many albums are going to get rave reviews everywhere, what's all the fuss about one poor review?
pitchfork in thinking an average metal album is average? they hardly slammed it or put up a video of a monkey pissing or whatever
and to be honest i think its a very well written well argued review. i thought the single was pretty average to be honest. Metallica need to get back to basics i think...not impressed with what i've heard so far but it's them so i'll buy it anyway.
just wondering when/if people are going to stop bitching about pitchfork. I like pitchfork, i think they're usually pretty right, and i would bet money that this album is going to be shit.
criticising Pitchfork when it stops bagging Tool and the Mars Volta at every opportunity.
It may not be an original sentiment but its indier-than-thou attitude shits me no end.
