One of the greatest bands ever.
Any other fans here?
and Aja are great.
Will have to investigate it now.
So witty and sharp. And clearly amoral bastards too!
I sometimes consider them as being a "guilty pleasure" as being over produced American FM baseball cap wearing million selling dad-rock....
Other times I thing,"fuck it - The Dan are bad ass mothers."
I'm quite keen on them.
I might stick some on now, actually.
Pretzel Logic is MINT.
Have a look on on Hype Machine, there's a really good bootleg from a Knitting Factory radio show.
absolutley rules - I love that song. Next for me is Bad Sneakers. Steely Dan are just amazing. I can always listen to them, whatever my mood.
And the Super Furries 'Man Don't Give A Fuck' is probably my favourite sample of all time.
Black Cow from Aja.
Also, lets not forget the sample of Peg for Eye Know by De La Soul.
they are superb. it's scary how smoothly they manage to rock.
Probably. Definitely the greatest band you're likely to hear on Century FM
Melodically spectacular, technically obscene - they are the alpha male of AOR, spurting buckets of creamy jizz all over the amateurish efforts of A.N. Other. They make every other band out there look like a total n00b
And the lyrics.. Oh boy the lyrics - Basically the perfect example of pop songwriting. Broad and rhetorical enough to allow casual listeners to draw their own conclusions, but each revolving around a strongly defined theme - all of them have an intricate meaning which only the truly dedicated listener will bother to discover, but they are perfectly valid as a series of wry punchlines/open suggestions. Yes mate, that is the stuff of perfect pop
Uh huh, the Dan are fucking badical
couldnt do it and it really bugged me.
i still think NIGHTFLY is a better 'work' than any of the Dan albums.
Probably my favourite band of all time. And yes, Nightfly is certainly as good as most Dan LP's and certainly better than Can't Buy a Thrill which I don't really like too much.
There is so much "Dan" love out there.
to put me in a good mood.
Most played track at work
to see such a Steely Dan love-in here.
I though I was the only one...
I love them so much. Dirty Work is, without question, the best song to listen to if you've got a hangover. Peg, Reelin' In The Years, My Old School, Black Friday..so many great jams. Everything about them is 10/10, no question.
ive only got gaucho, which i absolutely adore. for some reason it hadnt occured to me to get any more, whats the best cd i should get next? nightfly as mentioned above?
Aja or The Royal Scam. Or all of them.
'My Old School' never gets dull.
I wish I could scrobble from vinyl to Last FM. Patent that idea!
there is very little to choose between Countdown To Ecstacy, Pretzel Logic, Katy Lied, The Royal Scam, Aja and Gaucho. After years of endless listening to these albums, I have concluded that on any given day any one could be my favourite. At the moment I have a particular proclivity for Katy Lied -- the intro to Your Gold Teeth II is a beyond a joke amazing, and the last moments of the album, the piano outro to Throw Back The Little Ones, gives me chills (in a good way).
Can't Buy A Thrill also has its moments, but Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go are considerably weaker and appreciably slicker in a negative way.
from Play.com for £2.99 each.
Can't Buy A Thrill
I should be in for good listening unless you're all mugs.
unless you've got some cocaine stuck in your bushy tash.
Judging by your music taste you'll love them. Think a funkier, all-male, awesome version of Joni Mitchell.
what now with the what what?
i think they might be one of those bands which i enjoy just fine but which don't do a great deal for me. Can't really remember though
Pretzel Logic sounding great so far.
Always loved Rikki but the rest of these songs are new to me so far. 'Any Major Dude' rules.
Am feeling stoopid that it's taken me so long to 'discover' this band
Pretzel Logic / Can't Buy A Thrill / Katy Lied by the Dan
plus Mothership Connection by Parliament and Earth Wind And Fire's greatest hits. Well, it wasn't worth spending under a tenner, was it ? ...
This bloody forum costs me a lot of money, one way and another.
is right up with my favourite albums of all time.
I always enjoy the Nightfly and Pretzel Logic when they're on too.
in the top right of this page promoting complimentary Steely Dan ringtones.
Or have I finally gone through the looking glass?
70's rock night the other week at The Phoenix off Oxford St. Didn't know any of the tracks I heard all night barring one Stones song, but it was stupendous.
I shazamed one of the tracks I really loved and it was "Reeling in the years' By these guys, and I bought the album the next day on the strength of it. Great stuff...
you were at Heavy Load. Great club.
is such an amazing song. Just put it on a mix cd for someone. That and 3 other Steely Dan songs. I broke the golden mix rule several times over.
And thanks for reminding me cos I haven't played them for years and years. Think I have a couple of 8-tracks in the loft.
a few months back, and got me the boxset (Citizen) first seven albums, plus a few rarities. The live version of 'Bodhisatva' is scarily ball-crunchingly good. That's TWO drumkits there people. I frickin' love 'Green Earrings' and 'Don't take me alive'. And yes, 'The Nightfly' is a very fine album. One of the very first all-digitally recorded albums methinks...
band named after a fictional sex toy
has anyone seen nearly dan? i hear that they are pretty good, but i am a little scared of tribute acts.
in full in case u havent seen it.
Poignant bit: interview with big dan-fan ian dury before he died.
click the bit that says
watch the full video on veohtv.
u have to sign up and shit but its worth it.
they are indeed really good. they don't try to look like them or pretend you're watching a steely dan show, they're just 15 odd amazing musicians playing 2 hours of brilliant dan songs. highly recommended.
are pretty much one of my favourite bands ever. If only ATP could get them to do a Don't Look Back!
The back catalogue is pretty exhaustive. Quite a few rarities on there.
