Violin really improves a song I think, can you recommend me good violin-featuring bands and songs?
Strings of Life
...that's just one band four times.
One really good band, though.
Anything Warren Ellis touches turns to gold.
but notably: Suds and Soda and Gimme The Heat.
but for now i'll just put http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKlyZYofzR8
It's by Darling Violetta (who, also, were in an earlier episode of Buffy, as one oof the bands in The Bronze).
will set u up a treat!
especially live versions of about today
Midlake - Young Bride
it's one truley beautiful jazz album that is all strings well an SebRochford on drums.
It got nominated for last years Mercury but don't lt that put you off one little bit.
but is it Cats in Paris?
your out on the JAG again aint ya?
yes I'm right
I'm not in nor have I got anything to do with their album!!!
Please please please is sublime.
But doesn't John Cale play viola? Of course there may be violins on that album, so I might look a bit stupid now.
Agree with Lovely Allen, listed below. Also much of The Wedding by Oneida has lovely strings on it.
in Lovely Allen, such a cool riff.
And Olafur Arnalds, Sigur Ros, Amiina, Efterklang, Mum, all of them use strings to great effect i feel.
Today it's: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=H-4OxGFS3eg
one more cup of coffee - dylan
cant think late
And the laura marling album has some great violining going on. Especially Night Terror.
Suds and Soda
Hate or The Great Eastern?
win this thread for me.
Hope of the States
J Mascis uses the violin to great effect on What Else is New and a couple of other tracks on Where You Been.
the song Wrongfully I Rested in particular
dEUS of course!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh yeah and early Skyclad
also, ludovico einaudi uses a cello and string section to wonderful effect.
local-band-wise, check out Spokes (from manchester) which is just lovely and from leeds, The Amber Sleep- amazing stuff.
especially the song 'holes'
Turn Tail - full string quartet, luverly.
so it'll have to be me. The Monroe Transfer. Ta daah. Half our band are string players, and 2/7 of us are violinists. www.myspace.com/electricoldwirenoise.
their understated use of strings is perfect.
and then when I saw Stars Of The Lid live, their string section was pretty Sublime.
i'll get my coat...
surely levelling the land is an undeniable classic...
with Violinski on the electric violin
'Rag Mama Rag'
sampled by Dreadzone for 'Little Britain'
Many bands that employ a string player do so in a tactless and hamfisted fashion, with tacky arrangements and lack of dynamics.
use strings a lot, they play with a violin and cello
Hup - THE WONDER STUFF
Argentina - HEALEY & AMOS
aged dolls, it was there that I saw you, how near how far, etc. think if the band goes tits up conrad could make a living doing string arrangements a la john paul jones <3
The strings at the end of the song are gorgeous... <3
but far be it from me...
Jesus Etc. has some really nice violin in it.
Is gorgeous. Best. Strings. Ever.
that is a gorgeous record.
The WEG / Mono one that is
Patrick Wolf (viola, close enough), The National, Arcade Fire... lots of bands use them for specific songs like Jeff Buckley did on Grace.
How could I forget??? *slaps head*
Cats and Cats and Cats,
at least it's some sort of violin/ cello type thing.
Belle & Sebastian use them lots and well.
Don't Care is a great song. This band should get out of Cardiff more!
Especially On A Day Like This. Desipte its use during the Olympics on the beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeb.
