basically a Duran Duran song if you took the vocals off it.
"It was like a ticker-tape parade/When the plastique on the safe was blown away/And we all gazed from eye to eye/As we mouthed our silent goodbyes" to "Darken the city, night is a wire/Steam in the subway, earth is a afire/Do do do do do do do dodo dododo dodo" is quite vast.
the perfect the perfect the perfect the perfect crime!
Hungry Like The Wolf?
i got it wrong - it's Roxy Music I'm thinking of
in particular the song Love is the Drug
I'm actually shocked and appalled they a) recorded it, and b) let it be released as a single.
It's still a funky tune, first of all, and far too good to compare to that! Secondly, once you get over comparing it to whatever cheesy-sounding stuff you want, the atmosphere it conjures up seems to me more like a continuation of the feel and theme of "The Bagman's Gambit" from 'Picaresque' - only instead of the music feeling constricting and tight as the protagonists become increasingly embroiled and helpless, the music is lighter and freer, helping to convey that this was in fact the 'perfect crime'. HA the things you'll sit down and write when you should be working.
Anyway, I have to go, that's Pitchfork on the phone.
this is bigger bollocks than the song itself.
The Bagman's Gambit is incredible. The Perfect Crime is Capitol saying "write us a single Meloy!", surely?
They've always done long jams onstage, and they've always been more versatile than the "folk-rock" tag ... And, for fuck's sake, there is no way this was written as a single - O Valencia was the lead single, Summersong is a better pop tune - I think that's super-cynical of you :-)
for me they are the weakest two tracks on the album.
The Laura Veirs duet should have been a single, that song is fantastic.
That was the first song I heard from that album. Made me all excited it did.
'The Crane Wife 1 & 2', that's my favourite on their though :-)
then that crept out apologetically several months later.
Anyway, he's written some singles now: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/144819-the-decemberists-launch-singles-series
The original track didn't even feature on there. The first track was a Diplo remix, then it's a Junior Boys one, then A Touch of Class, and the last track was a different version of the original, "The Perfect Crime #2.5.1".
He's the superstars superstar.
ps. great photo. Obama should join permanently!
