Want to get into Elliot Smith, which is the best to begin with?
XO is extremely glossy-sounding (orchestras etc), but not in a way that ruins the songs. E/O is lo-fi and intimate. Both are pretty much flawless works of genius.
Basement, amazing though it is, takes a bit more time to get into; it's sprawling and bleak, and I think it helps to get accustomed to his earlier stuff before giving it a proper go.
All three are masterpieces in their own way.
Figure 8 is a great record too. Get that after Either/Or.
is my personal favourite album and the one I started off with but you cant go too far wrong with any of his
out of everyone I have ever spoken to.
just coming into say Figure 8 too
Probably not 'From A Basement On A Hill' as it was unfinished, but any of the first five (?) studio albums. I started with 'Figure 8'. Never did me any harm.
is my favourite if only for Kings Crossing followed by Twilight.
Kings crossing is mentally incredible.
3- either/or (it's overrated imo)
best of all though: figure 8
is an idiot.
In that order.
in my humble opinion
for me, all the way.
from a basement...
start with self-titled, it's incredible from beginning to end. so much love for it. That and Roman Candle are pretty dark, but I found RC took longer to love.
is the greatest, get this. Unbeatable
Is my favourite album by anyone ever.
Yet I would suggest starting with XO, it's a good 'starting point' if that makes sense. Not as stripped down as Either/Or but not as grand as Figure 8 so it'll give you a good idea of different sounds etc.
I think FABOTH is criminally underrated.
Kings Crossing is unlike anything else on earth.
It was my first Smith album and is still my favourite. I think the songwriting is fantastic and I prefer the slightly rougher, rockier sound to the softer, orchestral arrangements on the other two albums.
