i'm outta the loop. educate me pls.
old romantic killer band, i concur, grammatics, middleman, wintermute, vessels, paul marshall, the lodger, napolean IIIrd
i need someone to book who is good, different and not too expensive. the lodger are meant to be good.
are fantastic and play alot of gigs in Leeds they might be worth asking
no reply when i asked them how much they would be. I WANT THEM SO BAD.
they are brilliant live and play alot of gigs so I dunno might be tempted into it if a good night could be promised heheh
money should be no object when booking that band.
http://www.myspace.com/heypandaband (althouh actually halifax)
when they did something free at trash. alright, but the gang of four cover kinda ruined it a little.
one of my best mates plays in hey panda.
never heard anyone mention them on here before.
dont judge them on those songs on myspace, they recorded them when they'd been a band less than a month, and im pretty sure they've dropped all those songs and gone for a more lo-fi punk sound recently. they're always up for gigs, and will want next to no money as well.
would you like me to ask him if they're free?
it'd probably easier if you just dropped them a myspace with deets.
im sure they'd love to open or something.
they've got a gig on the 18th. i really liked them as well.
you can get them on a bit later so they could do the gig as well if its in the local area?
I was meaning to see them at nasty fest but I got there way to late.
plus I think you commented on my blog giving me the link to their myspace :)
this is what I said abou them in my Nasty Fest Preview:
'Thank you to the nice anonymous commenter to this post for a link has now been found yay! hay! Panda are a dirty little punk disco outfit from Halifax. Ramshackle noisy and fun, they live somewhere between Gang of Four, Deerhoof and LCD Soundsystem.'
than those demos recorded on turdy mics and never mixed.
they're recording a new lot in september i think.
I liked what I heard on the myspace, in a raw as hell peeps havin fun kinda way. It showed alot of promis.
we love these guys, and wrote about them back in May:
tell me more about this 'new sound'...
broken arm are a new great band. ex-sailors.
mob rules are good my war side two esque hardcore.
then there are all the obvious bilge pump, cowtown, quack quack, that fucking tank, pifco, wintermute, pulled apart by horses, sky larkin, wonderswan etc etc
what kind of music? it's a pretty large question, i could just say KAIZER CHEIF LOL
so far, ideally we want someone different to them...
join the facebook group if you like the look of it...
it's at santiagos so small venue.
Die Emergency are good
sound like Braid, Hoover, Jawbox, Spy Vs Spy etc
dark stoppy dischord 90's indie emo stuff
includes 2 ex-and none of them knew they were robots (OLD SKOOL LEEDS) and 1 ex-lucida console.
he supported Why? and he released some records on Anticon
1 man loops, beats, guitars and vocals.
im probably wrong and stupid now.
ive seen him interviewed in a fair few leeds zines and he plays here a lot.
comin over ere, stealin our bandz.
at least i was close.
ultcult are lovely. good choice.
Isn't that really sad?
a friend's cousin is in the band, and i really liked them from myspace. so YEAH. woo
Dino Pile up are wicked
good stuff I think I saw them a little bit at Nsty Fest in Leeds there was a big crowed for them.
i like. a lot!
bring the grunge back slowly in leeds
I like that one
for shellac esque dual bass funky antics
how did I forget the excelent...
one of um at least posts on here and is ace! HI!
I think they are from Leeds... or is it manc...
They might be a bit mellow for ya maybe if your after noisey swines. They make a kind of post rock minimal noise of epic proportions.
I think I got mixed up cos they got on corrie hehehe.
I really like their stuff. And they are wicked peeps.
but are bloddy brilliant. i'm so out of touch with the leeds scene at the moment, been a few years since i was crossing the pennines every week. however, i bloody love this band, they a great. and lovely chaps.
The Old House (actually Wakefield)
Red Stars Parade
when's the first one??
wanna be facebook friends?
Seriously though, Tigers and Cowtown will play for a nominal fee if not nothing I reckon.
I'm not sure I'll be around on the 18th though, I may have left this city by then :(
hopefully get the bands sorted soon so we can get the flyers done. but yeah, i am tres excited about ult cult anyway, we just need someone else now.
when you thinking of leaving?
probably sometime during the first couple of weeks in September though...
obvs you have to come!!
It seems exactly the sort of thing I'd really like.
If not, I'll be down for another one, promise!
if the first goes well, we may have one for nestors geburtstag in oct. if it doesn't... you won't have missed anything anyway.
there are so many good leeds bands its actually ridiculous
theres the folky ambient side of things like
rosie taylor project, amber sleep, david thomas braughton, fran rodgers, paul marshall, beardriver, michael rossiter etc...
then the more electronic ambient people like mechanical owl, worriedaboutsatan, ultre, glissando, etc...
then the spazzy chinchilla bands like cissy, cowtown, chops, tigers, beards, bilge pump, etc...
then the more jazzy and spazzy bands like bad animals, minghe morte, deathqunt, etc...
then the indie bands - wintermute, pulledapartbyhorses, dinosaur pile up
the heavier bands - these monsters, chickenhawk, humanfly, etc...
the lists are endless and they are all pretty good bands
we are really spoilt in leeds
thank you :)
would you do me a massive favour and have a look at what music we play and see who would be best going with ult cult? i want someone a bit more lively, no electronics. someone pretty heavy might be TOO heavy. think we're also looking into jon jones and the beatniks movement, depending on how much they are...
you can totally tell this is a diy night!!
and it says they're new york?
hmmm...says leeds on this page
the guitarist out of bad animals is also in deathqunt - who are also really good
they are all part of the big filthy jazz label - http://www.myspace.com/bigfilthyjazzcouk
good stuff! but if you dont like jazz then it probably isnt for you heh
you're doing this with nestor right? hes probably got loads of ideas! but i will have a looksee :D
it's the "the" that i didn't search.
thanks again. and yeah, it's with nestor... we are trying to see what our options are before booking a band. i think he mentioned vest for tysso, but after ult cult i'm thinking someone a bit lively would be best. hence why i want PABH but yeah, we need ideas maaaan.
hmmm have you heard spodni pradlo?
really great band from bradford - me and nestor have put them on before - sound abit like fela kuti mixed with adrian orange mixed with beirut
they are very lively and great fun
check em out
Who are beardriver?
That Fucking Tank
Year of the Man
The Grand March
im not sure if its beard river or bear driver
but i saw them at idioteque and remember liking it - cant remember them that well though
I'm so dippy - that was the Idioteque that HBH played too.
Was drunx somewhere.
after a bit of searching turns out it is bear driver
a thousand samurais is a nice song
but I think Two Minute Noodles are from Leeds. Definitely worth checking out, I hear one of them used to play in Procol Harum...then there's the obvious ones- Cowtown, Cissy, Chops...
Firstly we have these notable mainstream acts:
The Kaiser Chiefs
The Pigeon Detectives
Corrine Bailey Rae
Notable quality artists (if you're from Leeds and not aware of these already, then you ought to be ashamed of yourself)...
Gang Of Four http://www.myspace.com/gangoffour
The Wedding Present http://www.myspace.com/theweddingpresent
David Thomas Broughton - http://www.myspace.com/davidthomasbroughton
iForward, Russia! http://www.myspace.com/forwardrussia
Nightmares On Wax http://www.myspace.com/nightmaresonwax
Then we have this quality that has either been lingering around in the background or just coming through recently:
Vessels - post/math rock http://www.myspace.com/vesselsband
i concur - post-rock/indie http://www.myspace.com/iconcurband
Glissando - darkly orchestrated post-rock http://www.myspace.com/glissando
Duels - dark indie rock http://www.myspace.com/duelstheband
Quack Quack - experimental/prog rock
Sky Larkin - indie pop/rock http://www.myspace.com/skylarkinskylarkin
Tigers That Talked - indie pop/rock http://www.myspace.com/tigersthattalked
Wintermute - indie pop/rock
The Hair - indie pop/rock http://www.myspace.com/thehair
Napolean IIIrd - experimental pop http://www.myspace.com/boney3
Mechanical Owl - experimental indie pop/rock http://www.myspace.com/mechanicalowl
Vest For Tysso - experimental electronic/indie pop http://www.myspace.com/vestfortysso
Crayon - experimental indie pop
Held By Hands - experimental indie pop
Benjamin Wetherill - eerie folk
Paul Marshall - haunting folk http://www.myspace.com/paulmarshallyeah
Laura Groves - folk http://www.myspace.com/lauragroves
Stateless - trip hop http://www.myspace.com/statelessonline
The Declining Winter (Richard Adams of Hood solo project) - electronic/folk/indie http://www.myspace.com/thedecliningwinter
Bracken (Chris Adams of Hood)- electronic http://www.myspace.com/brackenmusic
Gareth S. Brown - classical/minimal electronic
Kidkanevil - hip hop/triphop
Of course, there are more great bands and artists in Leeds, this list is only the tip of the iceberg.
I would pay particular attention to the Mechanical Owl, Crayon and Vest For Tysso links because they are still largely unkwown to people in Leeds nevermind anywhere else. And if you like folk music and haven't heard of Benjamin Wetherill you ought to check that out too.
with Nightmares on Wax suporting please heheh
