i think they're great.
Otherwise they wouldn't have sold any albums. Personally I think they're okay, despite the fact that they steal everything. Very overrated too.
it's stealing if you do it first.
They lifted a song by a chiptune artist and rearranged it ever so slightly. They stole someone's artwork (I don't know the full story on this one though). They stole my friend's keyboard stand, then claimed they thought it was their's (they didn't even own a keyboard stand prior to the stealing). I know this has nothing to do with the music, but I still think their pretty average.
untrust us is fookin great, as is crimewave remix. about that stealing of the tune, i believe that was only the guy mixing about with a tune for fun and wasn't intended for release. they wrote everything on the album no?
But they made a track, complete with vocals, and put it up on their myspace as their own tune. There's hardly any difference between the two songs, and they didn't give Lo-Bat any credit for lifting his song. That's pretty shit of them.
I first heard 'Insecticon' on the Crystal Castles myspace page! Also, they mention Lo-Bat thought everyone was making a big deal of it. Having read one of Lo-Bat's blogs I'd beg to differ...Ehtan Kath also mentions that Alice Glass hadn't heard the track- how comes her vocals are on it then?
i'm sure lo-bat has come out of this with plenty of publicity which won't harm him one bit
I don't think he'd want to either. Either way, I think it's a pretty big deal, especially when a band try covering it up so badly.
the accusations of them stealing stuff reffered to artwork and keyboard stands! I thought the were supposed to have knicked most of the songs on their album. Granted there is a lot of stuff out there that has very similar sounds, like some of Timberland's stuff for instance, but as far as I know, CC did it all first.
Bit shot about knicking the keyboard stand though! I thought teh pikey outfits were just a joke!.
And worst of all, they didn't credit the original artist for use of his work. And CC didn't pioneer chiptune, it's been around for years.
yep sure a whole load of it but they didnt even release the tune, people make remixes and edits of tunes all the time. Not like they sold it back to everyone.
bootleg dance culture people like a tune they think they can put their stamp on it, so they do stuff with it. And more often than not its just for the artist to play out at gigs or in DJ sets. they just put it on myspace, no-one made any cash from it.
Its no big deal.
They nicked it! There's a few very slight adjustments but the song structure is almost identical.
nowt worng with that, people do it all the time to play out, so what if they got lazy and didnt add everyones name on it when they put it at shit quality on a myspace player...
these sorts of tunes have been around since the 70s and dub culture started whipping out edits and mixes of tracks and just selling them as white labels with no names on them at all.
CC didnt even sell this tune, they did nothing illegal or wrong.
Girl Talk does it, Shitmat does it, every other breakcore artsist does it...but not the point where they're lifting a whole track, adding vocals then passing it off as their own. Had no one noticed this it'd still be passed off as a CC song. It didn't bother me too much when I first heard about it, but when they repsonded to the accusations and bullshitted it annoyed me. And it's not about legalities, it's about principles.
thats for sure hehe
I think its just blown up to much cos they are so hyped.
every hyped rock band in history come across as twats. don't see how that affects the music in any way
Either way, I like some of their tracks, I'm just a bit lost as to why they're so rated.
I'm not a huge fan of Crystal Castles, though I like 'em, but for the Covox "theft", they essential stole the beat - not even the beat, the first bar. You can hear the mp3 compression from the original tune - it dampens the sound heavily: http://www.covox.net/audio/covox_-_sunday.mp3
There is NO tune there comparable to Love & Caring, pure and simple. It's a Crystal Castles song which uses a Covox drumbeat. End of. No crime there, it's been going on in electronic music since time began, as Jimi says. They came up and credited him, so end of.
isn't everything 'stolen' these days though?
i was being tongue-in-cheek there. maybe i should spell that out in future
Your definition of 'tongue-in-cheek' is far from accurate.
do you really think i actually meant everything these days is stolen?
definition: Ironically or as a joke, as in Was he speaking with tongue in cheek when he said Sally should run for president? This term probably alludes to the facial expression produced by poking one's tongue in one's cheek, perhaps to suppress a smile. [First half of 1800s]
they're certainly interesting. They give me 80s/early 90s computer games flashbacks. That's not always a good thing though.
they wont be around in a couple of years,
they cancel gigs willy nilly,
they look like tossers,
and they sound like computer games from ages ago.
was that at the barfly? they done it there and it really fucked me off! But apparently they were amazing at soundcity
i think they're great too
Why can't I just dislike a band's music?
Bollocks to them and a billion other bands like them.
i misunderstood the concept of a music 'discussion' board.
Grow up - not everyone's gonna like your favourite band.
Get over it.
was a joke by the way. chill
People who hear the hype before the music are very hard to impress, and to be fair the album did disappoint even many fans, so imagine someone buying it after hearing all the bloody NME/blog/forum hype.
Glasvegas are stuck in a similar position: the poor guys are in the position of having to produce an amazing debut album otherwise a lot of these people will give up on them and won't bother listening to any more stuff. Which is a shame.
actually aware of any hype at all, just heard a couple of good things, bought the album and was mighty impressed with it.
but i do think they are over rated by a few people/
christ it was bad.
stealing off other artists should read this article first:
let's face it, that kind of thing is going on everywhere in dance music, it's not as if crystal castles are the first act to be accused of such a thing
Yeah, good one.
focus all hatred on one particular example? timbaland did the same thing with 'courtship dating' didn't he?
What's your point? Successful artists should be allowed to ride roughshod over the basic tenets of intellectual property, and the people being ripped off should stop whining?
people with guitars have been using the same chords as everyone else since the begining of time hehe
just played diffrently its just people being snobish about playing an instrument is some how better than manipulating sounds in other electronic ways.
nothing mind blowing but the album is a laugh.
there is far to much hate for them 'stealing' music, as far as I can tell they just made there own version of some tunes and used massive chunks of it, but never sold it or anything. People have been making bootlegs and edits for years and years.
In fairness, from what I've heard when someone I know put them on up North, they were a bit arrogant and deceitful (stole from the shop of the people putting on the night to all accounts) so I wouldn't really believe their take on it.
I know what you mean about sampling, though. I guess it depends how much of the tune they took, really. If your sampling is just re-recording someone else's song for quick gain its a bit anti-ethic and arguably just crap art. Crap artists can't hide behind the same rules.
When they stole my friend's keyboard stand they claimed they thought it was theirs, despite the fact that they didn't own a keyboard stand at the time. Then they refused to play in the same room as my friend. Madness!
Wouldn't wanna turn Chinese whispers into libel. From a vintage clothes shop affair in the grim North East.
I can't remember if they gave it back or not but it was another 'assumption'. Like, they used something in a photo shoot then never gave it back or something. 'Assumed' it was one of the perks.
Y'know. Of being the world's biggest rockstars.
they didnt sell the tunes tho so i aint fussed about them gaining off stuff they shouldnt have. If they stuck the tunes out there on a their big high profile album and still didnt credit the people they knicked stuff from it would have been plain wrong
they make proper gash music and they look like arseholes. Everyone got over "oooooh it sounds like a gameboy but it's actually a proper song! have you heard of this?!" thing like 3 years ago.
Also they epitomise the wrongs of Shoreditch.
go team's first album full of uncredited samples? don't hear people dissing them..
A. Look like twats
B. Be admired by a majority of twats
C. Be in the image of Twat Incarnate
and most crucially
D. Go team used the samples well and in an interesting way when "80s cop show fun time" wasn't a genre avaliable to just slide into. It's like crystal castles and trendy london folk evolved at the same time in order to feed off each other.
who their perceived 'audience' is
Then option D is for you. Ripping someone off and completely recontextualising it are two different things. Did Avalanches get all their samples cleared?
Plus, The Go! Team probably didn't sample their contemporary peers of the same genre, age and target market. I don't know, though.
pretty much all hiphop ever as well...
Daft Punk sample massive chunks of tunes no one cares.
and I also like saying your name heheh lovebastard
didn't credit the samples, they actually had to go back and re-record the album for re-release because of that.
like everybody else.
after last night. What a crap ground. Does that count?
in the company of Crystal Palace than Crystal Castels, having seen them play live.
"Oh South London
Oh South London Is Wonderful..."
Repeat to fade.
is the right answer!
very insightful answer alright
a fucking mess.
man. they don't pay me minimum wage though, it's tough
because you're alice's lookalike. and they're AMAZING
don't really listen to them but if i heard a song by them, i wouldn't turn it off.
regardless of the thieving. apart from the odd one, most of their tunes are unlistenable shit. they're not bringing anything new to the party, just a load of noisy nonsense.
i bet when they heard the bbc olympic theme they were shaking in their boots!
the Olypic theme, I'm guessing its a Gorillaz tune aint it?
very gorilaz looking animation mind. i love it, best theme they have done in ages!
It was probibly Wogan who did it...
I know the animation is done by the Gorilaz guy.
The album was a massive overdue let-down and the guy comes across as a truly horrible individual in interviews, but they are good.
Soooo immensely jealous...do you not read magazines/music websites? I see their names everywhere. And I'm not exaggerating.
I don't like a band you like. Get over it.
How the fuck are they Nathan Barley wannabes?? You're fucking culture-deaf pal. They are NOTHING LIKE ANYTHING TO DO WITH NATHAN BARLEY WHICH WAS A CULTURALLY SPECIFIC SHOW ABOUT A YOUNG "MEDIA" TWAT IN EAST LONDON NOT A CATCHALL REFERENCE POINT FOR ANY SLIGHTLY BEEPY ELECTRONIC MUSIC PERFORMERS.
I'd say they're worth a listen, but personally I think people give more kudos than they deserve.
i thought everyone on here had a hardon for it pre-release
I was reiterating a point that was being overlooked repeatedly. Get your facts straight doofus. Glad to have made you laugh, your sense of humour must be terrible.
People dislike a band that you happen to like. You tell them to fuck off and wish bad things to their families, and then say I'M taking it personally?! Christ almighty...
but the LP was pretty dissapointing
one of my favourites the year!
had no idea people hated them.
I'll happily admit that they seem like complete arseholes, and that they're not as original as the hype claims them to be, but there's a lot I find to like about them. I've seen them live twice now, and both times they've been a fantastic live act, with Alice being a stunning frontwoman in particular. I think the album's pretty good as well, and although its impact was somewhat diluted because most of it was already freely available anyways (I think they've admitted themselves that the album was more of an afterthought and just a collection of demoes and singles they'd already done, much like A Place To Bury Strangers) it's still a hell of a lot of fun. While they have been pretty shifty over the whole t-shirt issue, the whole Lo-bat thing does seem to have been blown out of all proportion (I think jimitheexplorer pretty much summed it up earlier). If you don't like them, then fair enough, but I do object to being called a trendy Shoreditch wanker - never even been there for starters...
NMEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh - annoying arse licking too much coverage
The stealing of the songs - listen to a few Covox tracks and there is direct sampling w/o credit
The fact they are just pure cu*ts
This Verve album is sounding semi-pish so far
called "why does everyone LIKE Crystal Castles"...
