The Rakes - Capture/Release

marcofella [Edit] [Delete] 20 replies 10:05, 10 August '05
Been playing this album non-stop since last night. I have to say I am rather impressed with it. I’d obviously heard the singles and thought they were pretty decent. I saw them live a couple of months back too at the Newcastle Orange Fest, and was pretty impressed by that also. But to be honest I was expecting another boring British indie album. How wrong could I be?

The review on the front of DiS couldn’t be more spot on. They do seem to take hold of Britain and freeze it in a moment in time and offer it to the listener in album form. I’m a huge fan of Thethe and they did this in 1986 with the album Infected. That went on to be one of my favourite albums of all time.

Fav tracks at the moment are: 22 Grand, The Guilt & Work Work Work

Go read the DiS review, GD has it totally spot on.

I've never knowingly heard anything by The Rakes, I don't think. I imagine them to sound somewhere between The Libertines and The Ordinary Boys. Am I anywhere near?

I can see why you would say that. But they are much much better than that. The stories they weave are just amazing. Try and get hold of some MP3's.

I don't remember having heard anything by them, so I'm in the process of downloading the album to give it a go. I missed them at the Quayside festival, if I remember rightly a mixed grill at the Quayside Bar won out.

Download: "Just got Paid" by 'em, a b-side from their first single and it's brilliant.

They have one song 22 grand job and an echo pedal on the guitar and their singer dances like Ian Curtis if he'd been alive to watch the Office and didnt 'get' it.

I had high hopes but saw them at glastonbury and found counting rizla papers more of a concern - dissapointed!!

Didn't like the song i heard months ago.
Haven't read anything able to convince me to try a bit more.

22 grand job - i liked. lyric something like 'we did the same degree, you said less to me all week' - good

next song i hear - work, work whatever song - same idea, but worse delivery. one trick ponys?

We clearly have very different ideas of what boring music sounds like John.
