anyone like them? what album would you recommend?
One of those bands with a consistently high quality level.
is probably one of their most accessibe records. i would probably recommend that one.
I couldn't really get into the rest of the record though.
I'd be in love with JOA if all their stuff was like that.
so much staying alive really hard to listen to. same goes for in rape fantasy and terror sex we trust.
weird though, i reckon everyone has different approaches to JoA.
my fave album is the gap, then Joan of Arc, Dick Cheney, Mark Twain.
The earlier stuff is definitely more guitary and easier because of it though.
the one i was thinking of getting - beacause its cheap - is 'live in chicago 1999' or something along those lines. no-ones mentioned it, is it an ok lp to start with?
go for the early albums or joan of arc, dick cheney, mark twain.
worth bearing in mind that all JoA records are a total ordeal. ive hated every single one when i first bought it, but once i fought through the mud it eventually inevitably becomes one of my favourite albums.
looks like im not experimental enough for this thread, eh?
i wasnt saying that theyre like Ornette Coleman records, but that theres a lot of shit you have to sift through before you get to the songs a lot of the time. eventually the noise and sound collage stuff become integral to the experience, but wehn you first hear it it can sound like tim kinsella dissapearing slowly up his arse.
even the 'totally straight forward' records are pretty much full of stuff that can come across as pretty tuneless at first.
memory works has those little noise interludes between most of the songs, in rape fantasy is full of noisey non-songs, boo human has more of those noise interludes.
its true though,so much staying alive is straight guitars but it also has very odd moments on it... its also pretty boring. its probably my least favourite after in rape fantasy.
but like i said, everyone has different approaches to JoA, which i think is kind of their appeal. what i like about them is that theyre rewarding, things can start of sounding horrible but once you persevere you end up falling in love with the music.
anyway. we all love tim kinsella, lets congratulate ourselves.
must admit i no little about them - but i like the songs i've heard on their unofficial myspace and their on a label i'v got a lot of time for. can't recall them being discussed on DiS a lot to be honest.
maybe i'll get their 7" on polyvinyl to begin...
Generally people on here prefer Owls, Make Believe, American Football, etc...
Joan Of Arc are one of my favourite bands and I would agree with the people who said get A Portable Model Of... first. It has the song The Hands on it and it is was of the finest moments in music.
